Yeah it can make a huge difference. Michael Sanders got sentenced to 12 to 14 years each for 6 different burglaries to run concurrently. Because he kept good time he only spent about 6 years in prison before making parole and was completely done in 7 years. If the judge had ran them consecutively it would have been a 72 to 84 sentence and he would have had to do 36 to 42 years

Got kicked out two weeks before graduating HS....wasn't dealing with the death of a close family member well and was hanging with the wrong crowd.....went and stayed with the wrong crowd and had fun and ruined a good portion, if not all, of my adult life and a good deal of my health.....got away from it and found some good people to make friends out of....have moved away from them and now am working the best job I've ever had, making the most money I've ever made, and am looking at a relatively stable future right now, all things considered. Luckily, I don't have a record aside from a juvenile one consisting of underage consumption and possession of marijuana charges.....just gotta deal with the mental state that I've grown to have and the health issues I've brought on myself....both of which can be adjusted for the better, I think.

30 years plus a 10 and a few 3s, to run consecutively is where you get the 49 years. And I think he had 2 or 3 12 month terms to run concurrently, so they'd be served alongside (as part of) the 49 years.
