17:19, "...There is a very tight correlation between how insulin resistant the body is, and how insulin resistant the brain is...Studies that have looked at this have found that the more insulin resistant you are, the slower - the more sluggish your glucose processing is.
And some of the tests you mentioned are great because: things like measuring your waist circumference compared to your height - if your waist circumference is more than half your height, that's a clue to insulin resistance. If your triglycerides on your cholesterol panel - if those are higher than 100 mg per deciliter - that's a clue to insulin resistance.
If your fasting insulin level - which you can ask your doctor for - if they don't want to order it, you can order it yourself for $10 or $15, even without insurance - if your fasting insulin level is higher than 10. You want your fasting insulin level to be in the single digits.
EVEN IF YOUR FASTING GLUCOSE IS NORMAL, you still want to know what your fasting insulin level is BECAUSE FASTING GLUCOSE IS ONE OF THE LAST DOMINOS TO FALL in the road to type 2 diabetes. It's helpful to know what your fasting glucose is, BUT WHAT'S EVEN MORE EMPOWERING is to know HOW MUCH INSULIN IS YOUR BODY HAVING TO PRODUCE TO KEEP THAT GLUCOSE IN A NORMAL RANGE.
So, that's a really wonderful test as well. So lots of different ways that you can test yourself for insulin resistance that don't cost a lot of money.

33:36 Georgia Ede, MD "The downside is when you burn glucose for energy, it causes a little bit more inflammation, and it takes a little more oxidative stress to turn glucose into energy than if you're burning ketones for energy. So, ketones burn more cleanly, and more efficiently, with less inflammation, and less oxidative stress. So that the plus to ketones versus glucose."

question, "The high glucose levels in the brain *in and of themselves, * is that damaging?" Answer from Georgia Edes, MD 25:57, "YES. So there are two problems with insulin resistance, and the majority of us now have some degree of insulin resistance, unfortunately.
Two problems...1...the brain starts to run low on insulin. [2] the other, if you have insulin resistance, your glucose levels...especially after you eat, are going to tend to RUN TOO HIGH FOR TOO LONG. It's going to take long because you're insulin resistant: your insulin's not going to work as well or as quickly to bring that glucose back down into a healthy range after you eat.
...the next morning, your fasting glucose may still come back down to normal, but it's your postprandial, or after-meal glucose and insulin levels, that are going to be running too high.
SO, if your insulin levels are running too high, YOUR BRAIN WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME INSULIN RESISTANT. Insulin will be low in the brain, but what's the problem: ...the high glucose levels are running too high too often - EVERY TIME YOU GET A BLOOD-SUGAR SPIKE, YOU ALSO GET A BRAIN-SUGAR SPIKE.
So, the brain glucose and blood glucose are not equivalent, but they arise and fall together in proportion to one another. The brain actually can't take too much glucose, so the blood-brain barrier....keeps the brain glucose about 80% lower than the blood glucose level at all times, but it doesn't have a way to put a ceiling on it. So if your glucose goes too high in your blood, it will also go too high in your brain.
Blood sugar spike, brain sugar spike. And this is not good.
Because WHENEVER THERE'S TOO MUCH GLUCOSE INSIDE THE BRAIN that extra glucose literally sticks - it sticks to proteins and fats, membranes and DNA molecules - all the important parts of the brain. IT TAKES THESE REALLY IMPORTANT MOLECULES THAT YOUR CELLS NEED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AND IT CRIPPLES THEM...IT CARAMELIZES THEM INTO STICKY CLUSTERS...THAT DON'T FUNCTION PROPERLY ANYMORE, and these are called ADVANCED GLYCATION END PRODUCTS.
These sticky clumps - if they accumulate in the brain - it will interfere with cell signalling, and the brain won't work properly.
But the brain has an immune system, and it's always surveying the area. And if it detects any of these sticky clumps, it will sound the alarm in the brain, and say, "Okay, we've got a situation." Your brain will deliberately release inflammatory cytokines, to deliberately create inflammation - these are just kind of like little SOS signals calling for help.
And then it will also deliberately create something called oxidative stress: it will release oxygen-free radicals...which is why we're always told that we should eat more antioxidants....So...the brain purposefully creates inflammation and oxidative stress as an emergency response to these sticky clusters...normal immune response.
...it's supposed to be temporary...after which a healing phase is supposed to take place.
NOW WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'RE EATING TOO MANY OF THE WRONG CARBOHYDRATES TOO OFTEN? (which most people do....) So then what you're got, a situation: YOU'VE GOT THESE ALARM BELLS GOING OFF CONSTANTLY instead of this temporary, controlled, targeted inflammation and oxidative stress, YOU NEVER GET A CHANCE TO HEAL.
So the brain is under attack...from within ALL DAY LONG, AND WELL INTO THE NIGHT until your blood glucose levels and insulin levels come back down to normal again.

I need to loose weight lm 52 with pcos insulin resistance and now menopause..
Help .. Doing the keto diet cannot hurt. The gall bladder. Also is there not a way that we can lose the insulin resistance besides doing keto

I have 160pmol 2 hr insulin fasting .. what you do 52 yrs old Dr didn't believe me with pcos but finally was confirmed and now hysterectomy and l can't loose weight... all numbers high .. what to do ? Does it have to be keto??? I'm low income

    • @ElizabethEllisCoach
      @ElizabethEllisCoach 7 місяців тому

      Low income can do this.
Follow Dr. Boz & Dr. Mindy (also) for more specifics
      Learn & do Intermittent fasting
      Eat unprocessed real food:
Meat, Fish (low mercury wild caught), Chicken, Eggs
Whole fat dairy for some people
goat cheeses may work for some people.
Eat above ground non starchy veggies (fermented is good)
For fruit, only small portion of berries (until you are in goal maintaining)
If you are eating full fat you may not need or want to add much more, but it depends. If you are adding fats:
Butter, olive oil, MCT oil, are some.
Keep it simple…really simple. No refined carbs.
      Take Vitamin D3/K2, Magnesium,
Stay hydrated, move your body, rest, calm, sleep.

13:26 "If the brain runs too low on insulin, then brain cells will not work properly. and there are certain cells in the brain - all cells in the brain, they have the glucose come in, no questions asked. they don't require insulin to allow glucose to enter.
But there are certain cells in the brain which require extra boosts of glucose - because they are especially active cells. Those extra 'glucose surges' - those boosts of glucose - DO REQUIRE INSULIN.
So, there are certain cells that are 'super-charged' by insulin, and those include the cells of the hippocampus - which are the cells of the brain's memory and learning center. So, because making memories, and remembering things just takes a lot of extra energy - so those cells NEED MORE ENERGY THAN AVERAGE.
So, they get their usual amount of glucose that doesn't need any insulin, but then they have these extra boosts of glucose that are super-charged by insulin. There are special receptors on the cell's surfaces that say, 'Okay, we're really busy right now. We need even more glucose than the rest of the cells do...When insulin levels are high enough, it will super-charge those cells.
And that's why - if you have insulin resistance for many, many years - the first cells where you're going to notice problems are your memory cells...The insulin deficit is going to hit those cells the hardest."

Vegetables and fruit contain carbohydrates. Green leafy veggies have the fewest carbohydrates. The fruit with the lowest carbs are berries.
