I picked up Starter Villain as a complete impulse buy based on the cover too. I felt it was very true to the vibe in the blurb, very light-hearted, and just what I needed at the time I picked it up. I recommend it highly to anyone intrigued by the blurb.
My family loves John Scalzi. Starter Villian was our entry into his work. We love listening to his audiobooks in the car. I'm having my teens read the new Anne Frank book before the diary thanks to you!
Go into Starter Villain knowing as little as possible. It's SUCH a fun time. I'll do Black River Orchard with you in November if you want! It's been in my Audible library for *awhile* now but it's so long it stresses me out to think about!
I'd definitely recommend reading her diary first! I think the prequel will be more meaningful when they have a connection to Anne's story. The graphic novel version of her diary is also a great option.
I still keep up with middle-grade for Build Your Library and reviews for History Book By Book. I'm also a round 1 judge for the Cybils Awards in the middle-grade fiction category.

I’m so excited to read the Alice Hoffman book and the Bletchley Riddle!
I’m excited to see you are reading books for Part 2 of Self Education. I’m 3/4 through Part 1 and getting anxious 😂
I can’t wait to look at Mythmakers, too!
My Nightworms is out for delivery and I can't wait! One of the stickers glows in the dark which sounds fun!
I just saw that one of the stickers is glow in the dark!

Definitely! It will be fun to have someone to talk to about it.
I am going to have my 14 year old read Anne Frank and the new book. Would you recommend reading Anne Frank or the Alice Hoffman first?
I think I'd start with Anne's diary - the prequel will be more meaningful when they have a connection to Anne's story.
Which Anne frank book do you suggest a student read first? Thanks for the video. ❤

I am curious as to why you would still be buying middle grade books when your youngest daughter is currently in high school.
