I was born there in 1947, the doc who delivered me was Dr. Tracy Jones. My Dad and my Grandmother both passed there in the 50's. At that time Miss Boswell, RN was the hospital administrator and her secretary was Mary Elizabeth Jemley. I believe that originally the hospital was owned by Dr. E.M. Howard. Dr. Weiler also practiced there. As you said, the ambulance bay was small and at that time ambulances were also hearses from the funeral homes. There were no emergency medical systems back then. The white house across the street from the hospital was the Mound Street Inn, I believe the lady that owned it was Mrs. Stone, but I am not sure about that.

Awww Smith Howard ❤ that was my mamaw and papaw Smith’s doctor. Mamaw and Papaw didn’t enjoy the visits to the Doctors office, but I sure did. He always gave me loads of candy, and he had the good bubble gum so it was a treat for me. He was a dandy, I wished they made more like him! ❤ This brought back some happy memories, I sure do miss our older generation of folks, they were definitely staples in our county and community. Thank you for sharing ❤

When we would go over from Pennington gap to Harland to see someone in the hospital we would stop and buy a candy bar from the blind man in the lobby who must of ran the gift shop. He knew exactly what denomination of bill u would hand him by the way it felt. I always loved that. Thanks for sharing your story too God bless you

Around 1946 I was about 8 years old I. I went across the mountain to Pennington Gap in the back of an old pickup, that road was so steep that the pickup could not make it,that thing was backfiring so much I jumped out, and wouldn’t get back in till we got to the top, I’ve been a lot of places in my life but never seen a Highway like that.

I’m just now seeing this video. It was made like two years ago. I’m glad I found it. Thank you. As we get older we become reminiscent of the old times. I was born in the old Harlan hospital in 1955. I really can’t share too much because we moved when I was seven years old to VA. My daddy was a coal miner and we lived in the coal camp in Highsplint. I believe the doctor who delivered me was named Dr. Cawood. I do believe I remember my mother telling me that he took his own life many years later. He was very ill. I could be wrong. I’m trying to recall old memories. We came to town there in Harlan to trade. That’s what my mamaw called it. God rest her soul. I loved the dime store.

I lived in harlan until I 1952 and my dad who worked at both Green and Roberts motor co doing bogey and finder repair. We lived in the aria that is no longer there across the street in front of the old Green motor co (Chevy dealer) at that time .My great grandmother was in the old hos. We were called to come to Harlan with all speed to see her she was very low and expected to pass anytime .I rushed mom to her mother’s bedside and we barely could makeout her speech, she was praying, and a few days later was recovered enough to come home.To make a long story short.I was told she out lived her Dr. I also have lots of happy memories growing up to 13 there ,now living in Chattanooga Tn. Loved hearing your story...made me cry. I went into national archives and library of Congress and could not find any old pictures of the hospital. I know I had family way back when who had to stay at the hospital. I remember my mom mentioned my grandfather being taken there when his fingers were cut off in a mining accident. I really wish I had pictures to share...I can tell you have a heartfelt attachment. I know how you feel...I had a motorcycle wreck when I was 21. I should not be here today but the Lord let me live and the doctors and nurses at my hometown hospital nursed me back to health over a 6 week period. So I know how it is to have that attachment. I loved loved loved walking thru town at night when I was a kid. There is a certain ambiance with the street lights and the quietness. I wish I could help with the pictures...God bless

I was born there June 4th 1969 and Dr. Howard was the Dr. who delivered me. My wife and I recently visited Harlan, she had never been there and i had not been to Harlan since 1987. So I drove around showing her the places I grew up and for the life of me I couldn't find my birthplace. I knew it was in the vicinity of this clinic but wasn't entirely sure, thank you for helping clarify. This video meant a lot to me and I've enjoyed watching your other videos also, lots of memories.By the way, when did they turn Cawood high school into and elementary school? Thank you again for all the time you have put into these videos and be certain to know that they hold value for the people who have history in this town.

Thank you that means a lot to me I appreciate it. We've got the big things from history in the books but the small things in small towns in day-to-day life passes away and is forgotten, and I think it's disrespectful to the folks that came before us that we can let all they done and accomplished be forgotten so easily. Cawood high School closed when they consolidated the county high schools. I wasn't around here myself then, I'm thinking it was around 10 years ago give or take

@@IgnitedCoyote Thank you for the response, I was up till around 1am browsing your channel..a great trip down memory lane! When we last visited I have to admit it was bittersweet, especially visiting downtown Harlan. When I was a child, downtown was thriving and to see all the abandoned buildings and just the general lack of upkeep was saddening. But I found myself at the same time stepping outside of myself and visualizing me and my mother shopping the shops like the A&P going into Creech drug store and getting a DR Pepper or watching a movie at the Margie Grand theater..memories I woudn't trade for anything. It was a simpler time but looking back through my child's eye it couldn't have been any better. Thanks again for all the videos and the time and effort it takes to make them.

I was born in that old hospital in the late 1940's and mostly raised on Black Mountain and a place called Bate Wayne Hill. I remember my mother always pronounced my doctor's name as "animel" but I have not found any more information about him at the old hospital. I had a lot of visits there over the years as a child because my health was poor until I got older. I will never forget the smell of ether when I walked through the door. My oldest brother almost lost his life from a burst appendix years ago and was hospitalized at the old hospital for about three weeks. He too almost lost his life. My parents were from Leslie County where we lived from about 1958 to 1964, when I moved to Illinois. I go back to Harlan for a visit now and then. Its like going to a whole new state compared to what I remember growing up. Could I ask you Mr. Ignited Coyote who your doctor was at the old hospital? My mom had two pretty serious operations there in the late 1950s. I recall pale green patient rooms, with metal beds when I visited her. Maybe a night stand on wheels. There was no medical equipment like you see now in a modern hospital. In a word stark. However, I am sure patients got the best care available and best treatments at the time, but as a young kid, I didn't want anything to do with the place. It was a scary place o a 10-year-old. Related memories. Gene Presnell, who was the local route manager for the Knoxville News-Sentinel for many years, used to drop off papers for the local carrier route right across from the hospital Second Street. Later he moved the drop off to Mound Street in front of the hospital. The Ledingtons lived in the spacious house at the corner with the rock wall. Very nice couple, with three wonderful daughters. I remember sitting on the wall watch people come and go from the hospital, but generally it was a quiet place. There was something somber about the corner, at least I feel that way looking back.

I had my tonsils removed by Dr.smith Howard in the old hospital,in 1968, he was my doctor for all my teenage years he was also my dads doctor, he was very intelligent man,he could just look at you and tell you what was wrong with you, he also took the time out in 1973 to come out on the street to our car to look at my newborn son who was very sick in fact he only had 24 hours to live , I had him in the new hospital and they wasn’t doing anything to help my son,Smith Howard came out to the car took one look at my baby and told me exactly what was wrong with him and said, I would treat him in a minute if you had of had him here but I can’t sense he was born at the new hospital and I have no afillation with that hospital, but if you don’t get him to a better hospital he want make it another day, so I took him to fort Campbell army hospital as his dad was in the army and stationed in Germany at the time, the army recruiting officer gave me a sticker for the car where we could drive as fast as it was safe to do to get him to fort Campbell as it was a life and death matter, my brother who was a former solder at fort Campbell drove us from Harlan county to fort Campbell hospital, where they were waiting to revive us cause Dr smith Howard called ahead and gave his medical opinion that he was in need of immediate care ,he is now a grown man of 47 years ,thanks to Dr. Smith Howard and his skills and knowledge of the medical profession.i was born and raised in Harlan county ,married a Harlan county man and we had four children, left Harlan in 1973

They told me many stories of Harlan, Kentucky so many people came to the hospital with black lung disease. The hospital and Harlan Coal Miners Hospital (dedicated by John L. Lewis) was very up-to-date in the type of machines they had -scanning machines, etc.
My mother said that hospital had more advanced technology than other hospitals she worked at much later in her life and in much bigger cities. Thanks to John L. Lewis. I would love to see pictures of the old hospital.

Ignited Coyote my family comes from there, but I was born in Tennessee and I’ve only been there a few times. I’ve heard of a place Called Hyden Spurr. I only know it’s near my 2nd great grandmas cemetery Woods Cemetery in Thousandsticks. Then I know of Sams Branch, Bad Creek, and Jacks Creek area where my family was from. I’ve been there too. That’s all I know. My papaws sides from Keith, Harlan, Ky and my grandmas Family was from Sams Branch, Leslie, Ky. I just like to hear the stories of the places and learn more. I’d also be interested in knowing about Asher Sawmill. A lot of my family were employed there in the early to mid 1900s. It’s in Asher, Kentucky somewhere. But I don’t know much about it. Thanks for replying sir. Keep up the good work. I really like all the videos 😁

I think Dr Clark Baily delivered me, if my memory is correct. I remember my mother said I was very sick and Dr Clsrk Baily saved me after delivery. Does anyone remember Dr Clark Baily? I was named after him I waa told.

My earliest momory is of being in the hospital at Pennington Gap and at Harlan. I had multiple kidney infections that lasted about a year. I would have been either two or three.

I think members of my biological family were born in this hospital. My biological dad was born in Pennington Gap and a good deal of my family lived and may still live in the country. Cranks was home as well for my family.
