I always wished that Nester stayed around after the 90s. It was really touching to see him in the final issue of Nintendo Power, but other than that, there wasn't much else. My favorite example of this is probably Biollante in Godzilla: Save the Earth. The developers couldn’t get the rights to use the character in time for launch. However the character was completely finished. Just without a special move. Hackers were able to add her back in the game through hex editors, so it is entirely possible to put her back in the game. Albeit at the cost of one of the monsters on the roster.

You mean to tell me that at one point, my favorite rampaging monster could have been serving hot dunks against Bart simpson? That's it, we need a resurgence. NBA jam the good edition, Godzilla and Bart get them in there.
One that you missed is Moonknight and Colossus in Marvel Ultimate Alliance on PS2 and Xbox. Now even though both characters were in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, they were both inaccessible in the last gen releases for some reason, but using a series of exploits you can still put them into your party and play through the whole game with them with all their moves and animations intact. Its still unknown why the developers made them inaccessible when they were programed into the game and are fully functional.
How long until “But, hello you” takes up half the video considering it takes longer and longer each time? Also, need Peter Molyneux jokes back. Those never got old.
I’m not even sure what it means any more. It reminds me of the Jackbox game Joke Boat, which has you read out a nonsensical “catchphrase” after telling a joke....
My dad and I unlocked "wrath" with that gameshark code. The only glitch he had was his special move had no sound effects, but still, we renamed him "Brain Clark" in the game, and I got to play as my favorite tag team with him and Brian Adams in a nostalgic game.
I've always been curious about the presence of Barney the dinosaur in Xenophage... I think that he wouldn't apply as a banned/deleted character, but that just makes me wonder, how did they get Barney licensed to participate as a secret character in a fighting game full of blood?
Funny story: Some friends of mine did a mockup of Nester in Smash Bros 4 as an April Fool’s joke. That’s where the 3D render of Nester at 10:42 comes from.
I was there from the beginning... I wanted him in... BEFORE that April 1th. I thank those who followed... but let it be known, I always wanted him in. but seriously, were your friends fans or just shit posting? Honestly curious.
It's always fun to disect old games and see the things that were cut, but still within the code, and see what could have been. And even though Bart and Godzilla were cut from NBA Jam, it still would have been cool to play as headless characters.
The fun thing is, Boon usually did it behind the backs of the other programmers. At some point, John Tobias literally asked him to inform the team before including another hidden character.
Atari's Godzilla: Save the World files actually contain data for the unused character Biollante. If you edit the game's files and replace Mecha-King Ghidorah's files with Biollante's, you can actually use her and, besides lacking a Rage move, is fully functional. Apparently, Biollante was removed from the game at the last minute because the developers couldn't get the license in time. Also, not really a character, but rather a vehicle. You know how Ratchet & Clank 3's Multiplayer mode features two vehicles for players to use? Well, as it turns out, there's actually a fully functional unused third vehicle that can be used with hacks: a large, slow-moving tank that fires Gravity Bombs.
It feels like Mew needs an honorable mention. It wasn't supposed to be in Pokemon R/B/G/Y, and yet with the use of a glitch or GameShark you can access it.
Funnily enough, Goro in the original MK1 was also a stop motion model, and Shang Tsung being a shapeshifter was actually because they ran out of space to give him his own moveset (aside from the fireball move he has), he even had a scrapped fatality involving a sword if I recall. So we can also imagine Shang's actor just standing there, raising his hands for the fireball move and then being told they were done
The Mew under the truck in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green (Green is Japan's Blue Version) is a good example, although the method to obtain Mew was wrong, it (Mew) was found in the files

The info about the wrestling games was fascinating! I'm curious about what other crazy content was cut out. Considering how the popularity of wrestlers changes so quickly, I can't even imagine how chaotic development was!
To be fair, for developers its far easier and less risky to leave stuff in and comment out a few lines of code than to have to strip out entire parts of code, with the possibility that it will break some other part of the software.
Not really, because commented out code is not compiled and so there's no difference to the computer between it being commented out or removed. The reason to keep commented out code used to be that you might want to be able to put it back in later on, but there's no need for that with code stored in version control systems, which most modern software should be using. In that case, you can just revert whatever change happened earlier if you want it back and don't have to leave crusty, rotting code in the software people work on day to day. The examples in the video are likely of partial removals or required parts never being implemented. So, in the Bart Simpson case, which is probably just character graphics, the head was either never drawn or removed when they found out they weren't going to include him, but they missed the corresponding body, which is also unique to him. Same for Godzilla. With Sheeva, it seems they implemented code for her, but then just deleted the graphics. It's a lot easier to delete a few game assets than to risk changing the code to remove a character, and these are likely last minute changes. At best, you just make the code conditional on some cheat code.
Here's some more: Super spike v-ball for NES has a women's team that you can only unlock with a game genie code. Gran Turismo 3 still has code in it for a Porshe and a racing version of a Lamborghini but neither of these brands officially appear in the game.
If content is in a game, but hidden unless you go poking around the source code, chances are it's less because the devs were trying to be cheeky and more because content was axed late in development, when it would be easier to leave the content in and inaccessible, rather than try to pull it from the game's code and re-compile it. If it's in the game, but accessible via a cheat code (an actual code, mind, not a Game Shark or a device that makes the console read the game code differently) THEN it was deliberately left in.
You also forgot that Metal Mario was actually supposed to be a playable character as an unlockable in Smash Bros. N64, but the developers removed the character knowing it would be too overpowered.
I remember losing my mind when I found out Sheeva was in UMK3 on snes & at the same time creeped out everytime the game would crash the funny thing is the snes version would randomly crash regardless & would sometimes play loud noises or you would hear screaming similar to a creepy pasta story is insanely broken I was so glad she was actually in the game she is one of my favorite characters
You know, I think it would be INCREDIBLY funny if a game had the "x character belongs to y company" disclaimer for a character that didn't even appear in the game, on purpose. I'm talking like, Street Fighter flashing the copyright info for Yoshi. Fans would go nuts trying to unlock it.
My "favourite" has to be how in Gundam Battle Assault 1 they took the Japanese title Gundam The Battle Meister 2 and gave it a fresh coat of paint for US audiences BUT since Gundam Wing was more popular in the West, they removed the Hamma Hamma from ZZ Gundam and replaced it with Wing Gundam. Unfortunately, rather than give it a new moveset, it was a mere spriteswap of the already in the game Zeta Gundam. Then when Gundam Battle Assault 2 came out, it was so heavily built off GBA1 that certain characters were fully coded ingame but lacked some final touches and were removed, only accessible by a cheat device. These were The O, Qubeley, Zeta Gundam (now redundant by Wing Gundam's inclusion), and poor the poor Hamma Hamma. It's a shame, since it was a real fun character to play as, and despite it being fully programmed and playable in both Battle Assault games, US and European gamers never got to actually use the character unless they had a cheat device.

The game that happens in is "WWF Smackdown 2:Know Your Role" for PS1 where Big Show and Ken Shamrock were both removed but can randomly appear in the Royal Rumble Match. Their assets also appear in the Create-A-Wrestler part of the game, so you can make them in the game.
No, I'm pretty sure Turbo tried to remove the code for Vanellope so that he could take her place as King Candy, he wasn't thorough enough and she remained in the game, albeit a tad buggy due to missing code. He tried to take over the game when players started leaving his game cabinet to play Sugar Rush instead. Reskinning himself as King Candy was because everyone would get suspicious seeing Turbo in the game when jumping into someone else's game to stay relevant was considered taboo, and the game characters even referred to it as "going Turbo" since he was the first to do it for that very reason
@@JargonMadjin Sugar Rush came along years after Turbo's game was unplugged. Also arcade games would have used all available code space. Adding new code for a character would have been near impossible. Using a existing character that never quite made it into the game as a reskin would have gone unnoticed.
@@vjpearce Sugar Rush was added to the arcade while his game was still plugged in, that's how he noticed people playing it over his game, which pissed him off. He moved to Sugar Rush to try stay relevant. But because he never left Sugar Rush, anyone that tried to play his game noticed he was no longer in it and it was considered broken, and then unplugged. After his game was unplugged the game characters assumed he died with it since he was never seen again, in truth, he was still in Sugar Rush, taking up a new identity as King Candy

Who is your avatar?
I always wished that Nester stayed around after the 90s. It was really touching to see him in the final issue of Nintendo Power, but other than that, there wasn't much else. Having his own video game be exclusively made for the Virtual Boy certainly didn't help the fella out, so seeing that he was in Pilotwings 64 put a much-needed smile on my face. Guess it's time for me to finally try that game out!!
For real though, I want a new StarTropics game where Nester appears in the flesh. I'll even settle for a fangame.

Honey from Sonic The Fighters, she is totally programmed (Although readded in ports) and not used in the original game
Speaking of Sega, japanese version of Fighting Vipers had Pepsiman as an unlockable char, sadly completely removed outside of that country
If you dig a little further, you'll also find that the Rocket Metal Sonic from the intro is in the game too, along with a primitive Egg-Pawn with drill hands, Eggman in his UFO, Eggman himself, and of course, standard Metal Sonic.

Darn thing legit made me teary eyed at the time because man I loved Nintendo Power when it was still a magazine (I still have many of my cousin's old issues from the 90s and I kept many of the issues from the mag's final year, including the final issue, I unfortunately just had to get rid of many of them a while back due to moving and simply having no room for much of the old issues anymore).

Let's not forget the mighty "defaultman", a textureless humanoid character with no powers who can only jump.
How long until “But, hello you” takes up half the video considering it takes longer and longer each time?

I've always been curious about the presence of Barney the dinosaur in Xenophage... I think that he wouldn't apply as a banned/deleted character, but that just makes me wonder, how did they get Barney licensed to participate as a secret character in a fighting game full of blood?

It's always fun to disect old games and see the things that were cut, but still within the code, and see what could have been.
And even though Bart and Godzilla were cut from NBA Jam, it still would have been cool to play as headless characters.
How many secret characters should we hide in this game?
Ed Boon: Yes.
The fun thing is, Boon usually did it behind the backs of the other programmers. At some point, John Tobias literally asked him to inform the team before including another hidden character.
....Still banking on Shaggy appearing somehow.......

I'd just like to imagine the UMK3 actors pretending to fight a stop-motion character that obviously isn't there.

Thank you! :)
Here's some more:
Super spike v-ball for NES has a women's team that you can only unlock with a game genie code.
Gran Turismo 3 still has code in it for a Porshe and a racing version of a Lamborghini but neither of these brands officially appear in the game.
Still waiting for the full episode of "5 Things I've Put On Me Bum"
I find it so awesome that Gangrel actually got permission from Vampire:The Masquerade to use the character.
Larry got so thin, his hair doesn't know where to go!
Just to be clear, I love Larry! I only wish him only the best!
Yeah, it's much quicker and less risky to just block it off behind a conditional than starting ripping out hunks of code at that stage.
I'm headcanoning a "Charlie Nash"-type situation and that his full name is "Nester Lark".
Pretty normal, I'm a coder and removing things is PITA so just hiding or disabling a feature is easier in case it has to be put back in.
At some point we are gonna be listening to a 30 minute long "Hello, you"
If someone took every video on the channel and compiled them into a compilation of the "Hello Yous" then it could work
You know, I think it would be INCREDIBLY funny if a game had the "x character belongs to y company" disclaimer for a character that didn't even appear in the game, on purpose.
Qubeley, and Hamma Hamma made no sense on why they were cut when the other ZZ Mechs made it in
@@DDDorsett Big agree! Especially when there were no technical limitations preventing ANY of the cut characters from making it in. IIRC the only things missing were pilot faces and winquotes. I almost wanted to say maybe it was rushed for a holiday release but I checked and it came out in July.

Their assets also appear in the Create-A-Wrestler part of the game, so you can make them in the game.
I swear in the first Wreck It Ralph movie, King Candy was a removed/deleted character and Turbo found the code and used it as a reskin for himself.
