The era in which these fireman fought fire was know as the War Years, this was a time when the bronx was burning. The South Bronx had massive fires and the work was non-stop, these Firemen were Iron Men.

makes me feel like i'm sitting at the kitchen table when a old timer stops by to see the guys. always the best stories. Any of you young guys on the job, any time a retired guy stops by ask him to tell some stories. you'll never be let down.
This is much needed. Not enough can be said about this era . Thank you for this . 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I had the opportunity to visit Engine 82 and Ladder 31 back in 1990 with retired FDNY Fire Commissioner "Gus" Beekman. If anyone is interested in learning more about that era I would suggest they read "Report From Engine 82" by Dennis Smith. All the companies mentioned in the podcast are part of the novel (non-fiction).

@@johnfinucane5236 John, I wish I knew which F/H you got detailed to in Brownsville. Wasn't on Bristol Street, was it?

Retired after 25 years in the FDNY, these were the guys that broke me in and taught me the job, absolutely classic Fdny stories, was lucky to have gotten into the job, when there were still guys like John still around,
I am a retired firefighter out of Bridgeport Ct 31 years service this man is a true legend and an honor to the fire service . the history the experience this gentleman carries is amazing and he’s very humble . Even with the time I served in a busy city, I could sit listen to this man endlessly. .That’s respect! BK in CT
I'm In Ma. And I want to thank you for taking the time to share the true story's of What is was really like. I live in the city of the Fallen 6, And We Love all our Brave Firefighters. Thank You Again The Dizzy One.
1:06:00 Willy Doyle from Engine 82 passed away in the firehouse. I lived next door to the Doyles’. I was just a kid but I’ll never forget that day. He gave me my first car, VW Bug. In fact, the whole neighborhood was Bronx/Harlem firefighters. Greatest group of guys you could ever have around growing up.
Very respectful interview, extremely interesting, quite moving hearing these firefighters telling ins and outs of firefighting, and the family that exists. Yes, new firefighters really need to hear this. This video is a great training tool. Shows humanity . Many thanks. RESPECT HONOR DIGNITY LIFE
Thank you everyone for taking the time to watch this episode: The leather Helmet on the table is out of service and is only used for the show and remains on the table.
Really glad he acknowledged the devastation that the families went through.
Got nothing but respect for this generation. They saw more in a year than many of us will see our entire careers.
Agreed 💯
Ladder 31/engine 82 is my station! I love the FDNY!
Those were the years I was there from 1972 to 1974 as a FF did ride alongs
Awesome talk. Love to hear what he had to say
I remember the school fire they were referring to. It was during the Yankees/Dodgers WS in 1977.
Although, Howard Cosell never said " The Bronx is burning". That comes from one part of Report From Engine Co 82
You should do war years story’s every 3 months. The stories are insane
In a popular game called emergeNYC,they have engine 85 as a 2001 seagrave
Mike Carr, Engine 85... I remember that name well from Dennis Smith's "Report from Engine Co. 82".
Amazing to get the Lieutenant's own perspectives.
Wow what a gentleman! I bet he was a hard charger
Great interview nice job👍

Mike Carr's death was mentioned in dennis Smith's book the kid who pulled the box said he did it on a date from his friends
Hi could you please tell me where the original quarters of engine 85 was .and when it was disbanded. Thanks. Stay safe in this tough situation
It originally was in with E 82. They were disbanded in the early 90's
What is the name of this Fire Horse? I know he stated it in the beginning, but if you could add it to the title, it may be easier to find for future use.
La casa grande
My father worked in ladder 38.eng.88 Raymond Camacho 7.div and 18.batt
Breathtaking images of firefighters at work during the "War Years" by Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Paul Thayer who working from a darkroom in the basement of Rescue Company 1 would make prints and give them free of charge to the firefighters who were his subjects. These images considered by many to be among the best in the history of fire photography can be viewed by going to fdnyheroes.com
Great stuff brother. My dad was a South Bronx FF from '64-76' (L-42/E-73 at Prospect Ave and 152 St). He was in the truck and has some incredible stories from the War Years. Stay low and let it blow!
Tony M thanks!
@@PintheQPodcast No brother...thank you. These men provide an insight into such an important piece of fire service and American history. Their stories need to be told. If you are interested, I have direct access to a large group of War Years FF's who would really appreciate the opportunity to sit around the kitchen table with you and let the smoke bank down for a while.
i'M SURE WE WORKED MANY A FIRE TOGETHER
