- It got windy and cold and grey in Deer Lodge, MT as I walk you through this historic town near Butte. We start out at the Powell County Museum which is across the street from Old Montana Prison Museum and the Montana Auto Museum. We then head north towards downtown and see the historic storefronts, hotels, and restaurants there including the Elk Ridge Brewery and talk a bit about the story of Elk Tips Outdoor Gear. We then loop around past the library, school, and other locations as the light fades. Thanks so much for joining us on this little stroll through Deer Lodge. See below for some Wikipedia info.

Wikipedia:
Deer Lodge is an incorporated city in, and the county seat of, Powell County, Montana, United States. The population was 3,111 at the 2010 census. The city is perhaps best known as the home of the Montana State Prison, a major local employer. The Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs, and former state tuberculosis sanitarium in nearby Galen are the result of the power the western part of the state held over Montana at statehood due to the copper and mineral wealth in that area. Deer Lodge was also once an important railroad town, serving as a division headquarters for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ("the Milwaukee Road") before the railroad's local abandonment in 1980.
Extant mentions of the Deer Lodge Valley prior to 1860 are found as occasional remarks in records written for other purposes. Consistent record-keeping begins with the writings of Granville Stuart and others in the early 1860s.1860 marks the beginning of permanent occupation of both the valley and the future site of the city of Deer Lodge by European-Americans.
Fur Trade Era
Before 1860, the Deer Lodge Valley was not the territory of any American Indian group. Gatherings were held there, including horse races. American Indian groups from the west, Flatheads, Pend d'Oreilles et al. passed through the valley as an alternative route to and from the buffalo hunting grounds to the east.
The first documented visit to this area by European-American explorers occurred in 1805-1806, when Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery expedition passed by the Deer Lodge Valley without entering it.Evidence of earlier incursion, probably by Spaniards, was noted by miners during the 1880s, at Race Track Lake on the west side of the Deer Lodge Valley.
In 1846, the Deer Lodge Valley became part of the United States and Oregon Territory with the signing of the Oregon Treaty by the U. S. and Great Britain.
European-American settlement of the valley gained momentum during the 1850s and 60's, with the primary site being at present-day Deer Lodge. During the 1850s, trapper/traders from Fort Hall began wintering herds of horses and cattle in the valley. Also during that decade placer gold finds were made near present-day Gold Creek
John Francis (Johnny) Grant built the first permanent structures in the valley in 1859-60, at Grantsville near present-day Garrison. Beginning in 1864 with gold strikes to the north, Deer Lodge City grew rapidly as a base for supplies to mines in the surrounding mountains.
During the first half of the 1860s, Granville Stuart described valley social life as including many gay dances and parties, which was the way of the Metis
In 1869, the Territorial Prison was located at Deer Lodge.

I was born in Deer Lodge and for me I have the most Fondest Memories of dularge because of my grandpa Cooper❤
Awesome. It's a great little town, despite the weather on this day. Thanks for watching. -H
I love this place because there's no any skyscrapers. Such a lovely town.
Indeed
Many thanks. Me too. -H
Looks like they're reproducing or maintaining a Western-era building. Interesting, especially the appearance of the cemetery. It's small, but it's meaningful, so it becomes a little solemn. I like western movies. When I was a kid, I fell in love with Young-gun (1988), an American movie on TV on a weekend night. Recently, I saw the ballads of the Coen brothers. Game Red Red Red Rememotion 2 has been neglected for a long time because it can't afford to play.
Yes, that's an old Hotel they are trying to raise funds to preserve. All the best. -H
Very proud to say I’m from there. Still have family there. Miss that ole town.
It's a beautiful area, especially in summer. Thanks for the comment -H
That took me right back! We drove thru Deer Lodge every summer of my youth on our way from Seattle to my grandmas, and dads family, in Butte. We always stopped at the 4 B’s to eat…you walked right by it! I can’t believe it’s still there! For some reason I Always remember stopping there…sitting in the booth by the window…I can picture it all. Thanks for the memories! It was always a hopping place back then…this was late 50’s early 60’s!
There used to be one in Bozeman too but they tore it down. Glad it brought back memories. -H

At 5:16 is the old Prison Warden's house. At 6:00 is the old Registrar of Motor Vehicles for the state of MT, it has since move to Helena. We lived on St Mary's Ave. Once upon a time, the valley was filled with ranches, was a major train stop and had the prison. Kohr's Ranch is a historical site that is still working ranch. The Montana Bar has been there since I can remember. At 26:25 the Catholic church is on the left. As you go along, there is the rectory, the Catholic school and across St. Mary's are all the buildings for the Public Grade school. At 27:48 the old building up the street on the left was the original hospital run by the Catholic diocese. When the new hospital opened the building became a retreat for priests and nuns. The building is currently unoccupied and is falling apart. The house on the right across the street is my childhood home. The current state prison is west of Deer Lodge.
Wonderful additional info and clarifications. Thanks so much for taking the time to add these. I love getting these kinds of comments that broaden the picture of a place. -H

I thought about you while walking on my treadmill in my 70 degree living room. But don't despair. Come Tuesday we'll start having highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's.
Hah. Nice. Glad you enjoyed it. -H
It makes me sad really, to think about the smaller towns struggling. I really hope things will turn around soon. What we need in the world now is communities.
Agreed. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. -H
I always enjoy myself immensely when I'm traveling with you. Thank you so much for the wonderful time!

Thanks for this ‘cool’ tour! I notice in this and the previous two videos, that all the sidewalks and pavements have been well cleared of snow. Also good to see so many fine, mature trees by the roadsides, and in people’s gardens... Cheers Don
You are right! Nice to see people taking care of their sidewalks. -H

Thanks for listening -H
If anyone ever visits Deer Lodge, they have self-guided walking tours. At any of the museums, or the post office (across the street from Browsing Bison Books) you can pick up a brochure, scan the qr code, and it'll guide you. There are ghost tours of the Old Prison in normal years, and the Kohrs Ranch National Park has events in normal summers. The current Montana State Prison is west of town, along with the Prison Dairy, which makes some of the ice cream flavors sold at Prison Cow Ice Cream. The large block of a building near Speer School is a community center with gym (basketball court) and swimming pool. Sign is on the other side 😊
The town stoplight gets switched off at ten pm, when the curfew siren sounds (siren also used for emergencies, escapes, and riots).
This is awesome information! Thanks so for adding even more value to this. -H
nice snowy place!
Yes it was! Thanks. -H
amazing good job
Thank you so much 😀 -H
very very nice sharing frnd
Thank you so much 🙂 -H
Looked really bleak and cold there Henry. Even on my treadmill in the warm I felt the chill. That prison looked full of foreboding especially in that light. You asked about filming inside sites like these. Well speaking personally as a treadmiller i'm not really that keen, but as you have, (surprisingly to me) a greater proportion of viewers from the travel perspective I understand you have to cater for all.
You were talking about the lockdown in Europe, UK etc. It might intertest you to know. I live in the UK, right on the border of England and Wales in the small town of Chepstow. It has been interesting with Wales. England and Scotland all having lockdowns at different times it has created some interesting situations here ie by just crossing a very short old bridge you could go from lockdown to "freedom!" in a few strides! it made for some interesting and complex situations! The government has decieded to ease restrictions for Christmas to allow families to meet etc, which is great, but I think we will suffer for it later unfortunately!
Anyway thanks again for braving the elements and giving us a great walk, we all greatly appreciate it. Certainly brightens up my life in these trying times!
Thanks for the feedback and yes, I was surprised by the numbers as well. Stay safe over there. Wales is a part of the UK we'd love to visit on our next trip there. Cheers and stay safe. -H
its a nice place thank you for sharing..see you around
Thank you, I will -H
nice view Thank you
Thanks for visiting -H
Went to St. Mary's academy there in Deer Lodge in the 40s.
Thank you
Hi there. Wow, that must have been a different town and time. Thanks so much for sharing your memories. I hope you enjoyed the video. -H
i love the red buildings. They make the city look more lively when it's snowing
Many thanks. -H
Hello, I love your videos 😀👍
Glad you like them! Thanks so much. -H
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers! -H
At the beginning it looks like an abandoned movie set 💜
Very much so. It's like that when the wind is blowing hard. -H
Happy T Day, Henry. Been saving this walk and noticed the store featured WWII memorabilia. I was age 6 in Pittsburgh when that ended and recall the city wide celebration. No more walks til Spring is very understandable. Anyways I'm beginning a book cum screenplay to fit in with the generality that every third person in LA is working on a screenplay. Thanks for all your efforts. Cheers an' 'at
Oh, I'll be doing more walks all year. two a week until travel becomes more safe, then I'll try to up it back to three. Thanks and good luck on the book/screenplay. Thanks for the comment. Must have been a hell of a party in Pittsburgh back then. -H

It’s such a beautiful place for Sue. Thanks for watching and commenting. -H
nice view👍🇩🇪❤️
Thanks for visiting -H
Of course it's a pretty cool if you try to tour us sometimes inside some old building like that old prison building. It's good to do things in a different way; it gives us some break after usual walks.
Thanks. -H
very coool video
You are so kind -H
谢谢分享精彩影片!
Thanks. -H
Lived here back in early 1996 for a few months. Haven’t been there since. Looks the same for the most part.
Yeah, it doesn't change quick. More second homes in the area, maybe. -H
Good morning from here
Hello there! -H
Grew up here!
Nice area. I lived for a time in Ovando to the NE. -H
روعة 🌷🌹❤️👍
Thanks so much -H

Many thanks -H
Deer Lodge was a main division yard repair point on The Milwaukee Railroad. When it failed and closed it took the business heart out of the town.
Similar to Livingston, though we still have a bit of a yard going. Took half the population when it left. -H
Phil Jackson was born here. Hence why I'm watching.lol
I had no idea. Thanks so much -H
"Sent to Hell with Heaven's blessings in 15 miles! 😂😂😂 That was creepy!
Yeah, it was a rough place back then, and even though that's just a prop, there used to be actual tombstones like that. -H
Phil Jackson bring me here
Great. Thanks -H
