Thanks for this. I've had a leak in my flat from above and have a feeling this is the repair required so this has definitely calmed my nerves waiting for someone to attend!
Just bought a house previous owner had a leak he didn’t disclose, I’m getting a new bathroom regardless for like 6-7k, that was the plan anyway, this fix seems simple enough for the downstairs ceiling cheers for the video
I live in a flat with a plastered concrete ceiling, there was water coming through for months (it was like mud in areas). It's now all dry and I'm guessing getting all the old plaster hacked off first is recommended, rather than trying to smooth it over?
Yea I tried smoothing over in my issue that does not work. The water just comes back over it and the plaster drops down in flaky chunks. It's best to just replace the entire section with new plaster board instead of using some joint compound to just clean up the mess of the leak.
I live in an apartment building and I live on the top floor the 6th and have a real bad leak in my bedroom. I'm gunna have to do this but I think that my super needs to call a tar roofing specialist to re tar the roof. The fact is there's some kind of cracks on the roof floor above me so when it rains it leaks down on me. A lot of these videos I've seen focus on leaks from like a drain pipe or bathroom or something but I think my issue is a bit different and have yet to see any videos of anyone addressing such a leak, but I think this is a good start at the very least I can replace that section of my ceiling. I hope it's plasterboard. I think I'm going to have to get some tar or something myself and do it because my superintendent sucks. This video definitely makes it seem less daunting. I've legit had a messed up water stained ceiling in my bedroom for about a year now. I legit need to solve this issue so thank you
Thanks for this video. A company TX was charging me 1000 just to dry the inside of the ceiling and another 500 to fix it. If its showing moisture should I dry it myself. It was an ac leak from the second floor that made a bubble on my living room? just a little bubble that requires a 2x4 drywall
I’m in the US .. serious question… is the mud that is used over there always brown or did you add dye for the sake of showing coverage for your video? Nice job mate!
Typically we use British Gypsum plaster here in the UK. It is naturally this colour and dries a light pink colour. The colour comes from the substrate, which is clay rock, that surrounds the gypsum in the ground.
When he puts in the screws in the plastor board. What exactly is he screwing them into? It seemed like there was just open air on the other end closer to the camera. Do you screw them into a beamnor wood?
at around 30 seconds in, he says cut a line along the joist. There is a joist/beam of wood directly above the cut he made but the camera angle doesn't show it well.
As a first time tryer of this and never did anything handy because my dad died before he could show me ...could you also list all the materiels i need to buy from lowes or home depot to complete this task?
What about replacing the drywall on the ceiling Afterwards? I will have to remove everything from the room then clean the dust and put it back after the drywall is removed. I don't want to have to do this twice. Is replacing the drywall as messy as cutting it out?
Thank You for making this video. It helped me repair a downstairs bathroom ceiling easily. Subscribed. What songs are those playing in the background of the narration ?
Are dehumifers worth using and do they kill mold already in a room or do they just stop new mold appearing also is salt effective and ok to use in dehumifers that have crystals in the top of dehumifer when Crystal's have run out I have mold in my bedroom and I use dehumifers and I dont wanna have to keep buying more dehumifers
This is plaster, so it's different from standard drywall that can just be mudded and taped, then coated and painted. I own a property that's 100 years old and it has plaster & lathe walls and ceilings. The steps are always different when I have to do repairs over there vs at my house, which has drywall. Drywall is way easier. Any ceiling damage I've had to fix really sucks because that plaster skim coat can start peeling and then it quickly creates huge cracks and peeling sections. I was told the only way to fully prevent those headaches would be to mount a thin layer of 1/4 inch skimming drywall over the plaster ceiling. That would be cost prohibitive, plus it would drop the ceiling down by 1/4 inch or so, which is just enough to ruin the beautiful picture rail style crown molding all throughout the living spaces.
The very first thing you should have stated was to make sure all power is shut off before handing any electrical wiring...common sense is not common my friend, always remember safety precautions in your videos but other than that thanks for sharing I found it very helpful
Hi, if the ceiling is textured or has a pattern in it then it could contain asbestos. If you want to make sure you can order an asbestos testing kit online and send a sample in for testing.
According to my uncle, who has had several government jobs in relation to contracting and inspection, there are some tile sizes thay can identify asbestos materials. I don't remember specifics, but after it became known that asbestos was harmful they changed size standards to easily identify floor tiles. Not sure about ceilings, but better to have someone come look at it. You may need licensed professionals to remove it, as damage done to it can enter the air inside the home as well as your lungs.
He plastered it, so that means he just need to paint a few coats. I think if you’re from the US, usually you guys don’t plaster on top of plaster board, but instead where the gaps are, and then paint directly over the plasterboard.
Once it gets that wet & stained the integrity of the gyprock sheet has failed and there is no strength left. Also it is almost impossible to block those stains coming through in the future. You would spend more time / money trying to save it rather than just cutting out the cancer once & for all.
We have roaches coming from a big uh… crack.. ?? :)) we sit right under where they jump down. This is the closest video i could find and we dont have the money for this 😭
@@ryanseeley I’m contemplating it. Currently just use the multi tool like yourself but the router does have that depth gauge always nice for avoiding pipes and wires
I’ve got a dri wall router. Waste of time in my opinion. If it was more like American 🇺🇸 here with the dri wall box’s and a lot more metal track would be worth it.
bad storm came by and a bubble destroyed my ceiling, this video makes me feel a lot better knowing it's not that hard a fix
Thanks for this. I've had a leak in my flat from above and have a feeling this is the repair required so this has definitely calmed my nerves waiting for someone to attend!

This video was about reparing the ceiling and not the leak, as in description.. good job mate and thanks for sharing 👍
what is the pva for? and do you need to let the pva dry before plaster. thanks for the vid
What was done about mold detection and removal?
Top skilled job, you make it look easy, but it's not. Thank you. Peace be unto you.
Kudos to you. Plastering like that is one of the hardest skills to learn. You make it look easy.
Thanks mate I've just recently gone back to college to do plastering again got all mi tools from Amazon I'm going to subscribe to your channel
Thanks, let me know if you want a video about a specific topic and I'll see if we can put one together! 👍

Great video! Just had a leak into my bathroom, ceiling needs seen to!
Yeah these kind of leaks are so Common

Appreciate the video I've had a hole in my Trailer ceiling for a while & was wondering if I could repair it.
Sounds like thst might be metal...
Agree, May NEED a DIFFERENT Approach for That METAL
It is almost the end of the world when you don't have the money to repair it.
Right? Luckily videos like this help us do it on our own
Great video I needed an understanding of what was involved in fixing my kitchen ceiling.
Great work, man you are tidy at this well done and thanks for sharing.
What did you drill the screws onto to hold it in place
Nice video, it's better than the realtors bleaching it.
Great vid man. Thanks from New Hampshire, US.

Looks cool with the tan coloured mud. I wouldn't even have painted it. Though being in a bathroom I suppose it'd be better?
Shall I use 1/2" or 5/8" drywall for a ceiling repair job like this? Thanks!
Lovely work, thanks for sharing! Definitely is going to help me with my project.

Yes screw into the beam
Lemme ask what all your using to do this cause this is great work i just wanna know specifically what your using
As a first time tryer of this and never did anything handy because my dad died before he could show me ...could you also list all the materiels i need to buy from lowes or home depot to complete this task?
If there is damage to the wall you need to repair at the same time....do you patch the wall first or the ceiling first or does it matter?
Ceiling first as a general rule 👍
What about replacing the drywall on the ceiling Afterwards? I will have to remove everything from the room then clean the dust and put it back after the drywall is removed. I don't want to have to do this twice. Is replacing the drywall as messy as cutting it out?
Nice work. I hope I can find a handyman to do such clean work
What are you screwing the plaster board into?
How would the procedure differ if I had sprinklers in the ceiling?
Can you do that for the outside too ?
Can i ask... Can a ceiling be overboarded and plastered without messing up the walls which a perfectly decorated already?
What are the materials required
Thank You for making this video.
It helped me repair a downstairs bathroom ceiling easily. Subscribed.
What songs are those playing in the background of the narration ?
This video is a life saver
You didn’t mention to turn off the power before taking that light apart?
It has 240V which can kill?
Great video! Does the same method apply to water floor damage?
Thanks, yeah similar if you have water damaged floor boards. The only difference is you don't skim the floor obviously!
Kill mold with white vinegar, buy an electric dehumidifier. Crystals might work, but probably won't
I used high end dehumidifier once water pipe was fixed, and I use dehumidifiers all the time,
1:35 So if you have only yourself, how does one person put screws in and hold the drywall board up at the same time?
You....hold.....the drywall piece up with one hand and the drill with the other...............
How long did it take you to do that job? Also, how much do you think it would cost? I understand it is a per hour rate, right?
If I remember correctly, this job took around 3 hours or so (half a day) to do and I probably charged around £180 - £220 including the materials
Why do you guys do a skim coat? In Canada we just use tape and mud along the edges and its smooth enough.
Exactly!! I was wondering the same…
This is plaster, so it's different from standard drywall that can just be mudded and taped, then coated and painted. I have no experience in fixing a ceiling. Are there any extra tips for a beginner
Pva?
Skimming?
why is it brown?
Great video thanks
Whats the screw driver to use for these
2:04 what did you do there?
How much can this cost?
very good work, Thanks
Rule # 1 always use protective eyewear and dust mask
I was thinking the same thing. Don't want to breathe in all that stuff!
@@cynicalcindy1434you totally should, if you want breathing problem down the track
Guess who made this replay before he’d even watched the videos.
Fucking bitter tradies and their constant negativity regarding other people’s work. 😂
And turn off electricity
Remember artex before around the 90s will contain asbestos. PP3 dust mask is required.
Nice video, how much that would cost, I have exactly the same problem, wondering if hire someone or do it myself.
About £150-£300 to patch something like this depending on skill and experience
@@ryanseeley thank you
So you don’t need finish it with white paint?
You would still need to paint this once dry
This video saved me 180 quid subscriber definitely thank you
What is ‘PVA ing’ the ceiling?
Pva glue coat
Great work!
What kind of professional should I call to fix similar problem without costing me so much money?
What kind of tape did you used?
It's called scrim tape
Dang, you do some nice work. Thanks for the video.
why do the skimming? Cant you just plaster over the tape and screws, then sand and seal?
Did you have to sand this at all? That's honestly the part I dread most due to drywall dust getting all over everything.
Amateurs or the average person yeah, but if its done smooth enough paint should be fine.. I know from my own experience haha of having to sand lots
how much of a job like this cost? Anyone know?
Hi u still work this job ,we need to repair pls let me know
Why do these gyprock repair vids almost never use stud adhesive?
I wish I had him! Nice job!
The very first thing you should have stated was to make sure all power is shut off before handing any electrical wiring...common sense is not common my friend, always remember safety precautions in your videos but other than that thanks for sharing I found it very helpful
I’m sure he did that before starting the video
Canthis be done with ready mix plaster?
Yes, as long as you know how to use it correctly the process is more or less the same.
You are amazing, thank you.
My home was built in 1925. I've heard asbestos could be an issue. Are ceilings known to have that and how would I know?

What material is being added for skimming please anyone? Wet plaster, just paint?
It's finishing plaster. The colour is it's natural colour
What’s the song in the background @3:00 mins
big job there ryan good work tho
What about where it's leaking from?
Lord I need u lol u made this so easy
Bang up job mate
Very cool 😎
Brilliant 👏🏽
Anyone know what the o a layer is?
What happens next? Do you paint it? Do you put tiles up?
He plastered it, so that means he just need to paint a few coats. I think if you’re from the US, usually you guys don’t plaster on top of plaster board, but instead where the gaps are, and then paint directly over the plasterboard.
i'm tempted to repair it myself but the skimming part looks hard

Yes sir
What's PVA the ceiling mean?
PVA is a type of glue
PVA is a type of glue we use as a primer
Our ceiling just got fixed and it has smelled HORRIBLE for 2 weeks now anybody have any idea how to remedy this???? Please help

How much does this cost roughly?
It would usually be around £180 in total
Why's your plaster brown?
Just the way the gypsum comes out of the ground here in the UK
We have roaches coming from a big uh… crack.. ?? :)) we sit right under where they jump down.
This is the closest video i could find and we dont have the money for this 😭
What is skimming?
And the leak?
You just replace the ceiling again when it breaks out like that. Can be very costly over time
This video isn’t about how to rectify the leak.
You get a plumber to fix the leak
Get your roof inspected in case the leak is coming from the roof.
Plumber needs to fix leak before obviously. Then you can sheetrock guy or handyman to repair ceiling.
Next job fix the leak.
Or replace the roof .
Ever thought about Drywall Router??
Yeah I've never used one but they do seem pretty good. Would you recommend?

Another good video pal. You mentioned a few times on expanding your business, how’s that going find any new spreads ?
That does sound like a good feature to be honest
Yeah right....🤣 cutting the board to fit that well, is now so easy.
don't know why you flushed the whole ceiling when all you need is to flush the joints of the new piece with joint tape and flushing compound
actually- the first thing you do is turn off the power at the fing mains. thanks
very informative otherwise though (:
