- Friday, September 30, 2011 - Part 1. The Miller Ferry dock at Catawba Island (Ohio) under heavy winds and waves. Video of the Put-in-Bay ferry MV Wm. Market leaving the Catawba pier with waves crashing all around. As the boat goes into open water, the waves get worse. In the background is the ferry from Middle Bass Island waiting to pull in. Yeah I love the west basin! It's great going to and from Pelee island to Sandusky.

It's really shallow on the Western basin of lake erie, so the wind picks up huge waves and close together there. That's sadly why so many people die on our lake, they underestimate it all the time.
But being such a huge body of water, and only 30-45' deep almost everywhere on the west end, it picks up quick and a lot of times without any real warning.
That is in the bay. Out on open water it is way worse
