That is actually a very good description of how telomeres work. Just enough technical discussion to be accurate, but lay-people can ignore that and hear the "they get shorter each time they are copied". Well done on walking the fine line between oversimplification and pedantry.
Glad to see this one! This question crossed my mind this very week, as my mom and I were putting candles on my dad's birthday cake. Thanks for posting this!!
I was a cop in a large US city for 7 years. Even for that reason alone, I’m sure it would rarely work as even the dumbest of criminals would be wise to it.
You are not wrong. The longevity noodles are actually pretty long, but the kicker is, when you eat them, you must not bite into the noodles. Cutting or severing the noodles is symbolic of cutting you longevity short, so most try their best to slurp.
Hey, thanks guys! :D Thanks for taking the time to share a neat cultural tradition with someone like me who has no culture but wants some. Now I want some noodles... 🍜🤔
We don't translate it as longevity noodles though. We call it long-life noodles. It was in a sit-com, this kid had his birthday and wanted a cake his father ( maybe was his grandfather I don't remember) said it's not traditional, he must eat long life noodle. The ending of that episode was the father putting down a cake box while everyone sorta rejoiced that he relented. When they opened the box, it was a plate of long life noodles .
"Happy Birthday" was first sung in Louisville, Kentucky, at one of the 3 houses together known as The Little Loom House. The Little Loomhouse houses historic weaving patterns and teaches weaving on a loom that is small enough to sit on your lap. In one there are some 30 little looms set up as a floor loom is and is operated the same way. A weaving society has members who curate the little looms, and they never fail to point out the framed newspaper article (Courier Journal) showing the article and picture of "Happy Birthday" first being sung. This historic site, that was once an art farm, is worth a visit for history and for art. And make yourself a "mug rug" while you are there.

Hi Simon, this is something I’ve always wondered- how do nature documentaries get such good footage? Do they stalk these animals or just place as many cameras in scenic areas hoping that the animals walk into the shot? I can rarely get a good photo of my pets, so I can’t imagine how hard it is to film wild animals.
My guess would be bait. That would also most likely be denied. No, seriously, it's probably the result of having professional crews working in shifts 24/7 filming everything in sight, constantly. Then it goes to editing and the magic happens! Poof! 1 slick documentary. Or something.
So onomastic is more traditional than birthday? Good for me that always forget birthdays but always remember the day of the saint with same name of the person. Saint Simon Peter's day is 29 of June, therefore happy onomastic in advance.
According to my Google profile, I was born 4/1/1900. They gave me the ability to choose this date, I took it. I've complied with the "mandatory information", so they're happy 🙄
I hate my birthday. As a child I never had a great birthday and as an adult, I'm often forgot about. I don't think I have blown out candles on a cake in over ten years.
It's very likely that Pharaoh birthday is the day when he got a new child. The original hebrew in the bible (יום הולדת את פרעה) can be translate as "the day of the birth of Pharaoh", the strange sentence and the fact that there is no similar thing in the bible led to a common understanding that they celebrate a new Pharaoh birth rather than the birthday of the current one.

Probably fake. If we could get the raw footage we'd hear the director calling cut and sending the cheetah and gazelle back to start positions.
So onomastic is more traditional than birthday? Good for me that always forget birthdays but always remember the day of the saint with same name of the person.
Saint Simon Peter's day is 29 of June, therefore happy onomastic in advance.
that's kinda creepy - you uploaded this on my birthday.
Don't get frosting on the screen. ( : Happy Birthday.
Joshua Oxenford mine too!

According to my Google profile, I was born 4/1/1900.
They gave me the ability to choose this date, I took it.
I've complied with the "mandatory information", so they're happy 🙄
I believe that the age of humanity was capped at 120 back in Genesis 4.
I hate my birthday. As a child I never had a great birthday and as an adult, I'm often forgot about. I don't think I have blown out candles on a cake in over ten years.
Come for the interesting birthday facts, stay for the molecular biology lesson!
Even the animals have a "birthday"
It was common to celebrate the baptism-day
Came for the cake, stayed for the telomeres.
Before I watch I’ll answer the question of “ why candles”.... Because TNT leaves a real mess and it’s hard on wishes. IMO 😂🤪🥳
Marc Lemieux -- However, that is how Wiley E. Coyote likes it.
Don't forget Mitt Romney's new candle blowing method.
How bad was the cake that you hang the Baker?
How did the candles on birthday cakes start? Maybe because dynamite sticks were too messy?
When was the first recorded instance of people bathing? Like a whole group of people, as in a town.
I dig the birthday Jesus.
WTF is a “Longevity noodle”?
My sentiment exactly.
Is that what they're calling it now?
noodle that lives long
A 50 ft. noodle wound up in a bowl?
Christel Headington Lady and the tramp are going to have a hard time with that one..
If you're l00, the Fire-Department comes out!! 😂
But it's also the big deal for the Queen. She will sent you a later. But not Yanks
Can we get a Simon cover of ''Good Morning too all''?
Anyone else here who celebrates their name day?
Because it's pagan ritual. And pagan cultures are always fun to adopt.
