I'm a 55 years old male . I still vividly remember a memory of an extremely dirty and insanity homeless woman looked like almost 50 years old who has appeared to me and people of my village when I was around 6 years old... Elder people in my village said she was a comfort woman(sexual slave) for Japanese military during in the pacific war and she has got mentally ill due to psychological traumas from her horrible experiences.
Maybe because of that, she was constantly hurling cuss words at Japanese.
Actually, I didn't fully understand what happened to that poor woman but I dimly realized that she had experienced something very miserable.
At that time, there was not enough social care system for those kinds of pathetic people in Korea.
So, all the people in my village even 6 years old boy took care of her together for a while until she was suddenly disappeared from our village oneday.
Now, I know what happened to her and my heart is much more painful for her than when I was 6 years old.
Japanese colonial era is not only history in the book but it is still stigmatic and very painful memories to Korean people.

I loved this kdrama, finished it after 6 months, so much in pain especially the last episode. My own grandpa was a freedom fighter who took part in freedom struggle of "Quit British India Movement" and "Non-Cooperation Movement", he had to drop out of school in order to continue to be the part of resistance group against Britisher's, used to stay hidden in the mountains of Gaaro-Khasi hills in North East India to see India as a free country. Was newly married to my grandmother but was not able to spent sweet moments because they always lived in a fear of getting caught, his best friend was being shot before his own eyes by the British Army and he too was taken into custody by them and was tortured, during winters. This drama hits home, I did see my grandpa but didn't get much time to spend with him was he died in 2003, 16th January, with pride and honour. His last words were, "I will die as an Indian in a free nation".
This drama, makes me realise that our ancestors fought for us with their sweat and blood so we can live happily in a free nation. I am a proud Indian in a free nation, thanks to our forgotten heroes and I am happy for the Koreans too who are able to live in a happy and a free country, without any fear.

The emotions of modern Korean people are still connected with that era.
Because Korean tragedy did not end in that drama.
Although it was a colony of Japan, the Korean Peninsula was a unified country. After World War II, Japan retreated from the Korean Peninsula, but in a country that lost its king, capitalists, communists, democrats, socialists, pro-Japaneses, pro-Americans, and pro-Soviet groups were entangled, splitting the country in half in two years, killing and killing each other. War is coming. The tragedy is currently ongoing.

In all the films and series I had ever watched in my life time, THE CROW was always my heart.. I just discovered *Mr. Sunshine* Yesterday, began the first epi in the afternoon and skipped my sleep all the way until this afternoon.. It's 10:09 pm Hawaii time as I comment... and I am still shook, and still tear every now and then all because, Mr. Sunshine died, and all those beautiful people who had walked through the battles with and for Ae-shin and the people of Joseon. The entire plot and story killed me every episode that played, every character was carefully conducted. I've never been so affected by such a well crafted story of a split fiction and non fiction in my entire life since *The crow.* My eyes had never welled up for a beautiful a and heartbreaking series such as *Mr. Sunshine.* And OMG I have fallen in love with Eugene. I cant even explain what this film does to me now. *FUCKING HEARTFELT. BEST KOREAN DRAMA* I had ever seen to date. @@kdramacouple lol. It's kind of funny how I came about it. My mother and I are huge Korean drama fans. My top three faves are, *FATED TO LOVE YOU, MOON EMBRACING THE SUN, & BOYS OVER FLOWERS. But I fave so many others, I just chose those three as my top. I had the day off the last two days, had all my arends and chores done. And it was my down time and I was grazing through Netflix. There were a few times I passed by *MR. SUNSHINE* before a while back, last week I passed by it again, but for some odd reason something told me to pick it two days ago and just give the first episode a try. Yup... and the first epi I already feel in love with Eugene, lol. But then I was so not prepared for the story, and then the last epi happends and I got stuck with my emotions. I try not to pick KDramas in my work days because I'll only stay up late watching an entire series. So I'll only watch them on my days off if I have no plans and no priorities for the day. But when the show is that good, I go to work the next day lingering about it 😫😭.
If you plan on watching *THE CROW,* just be aware of the heavy violence. But I guarantee that film will become your new sweetheart... #RIPBrandonLee And I am being so honest... *THE CROW* film and comic book and the author of the story is my heart. And then *MR. SUNSHINE* happened, this is 21 years later since a film had ever clutched my heart. I never thought there'd be a second for me.

Japan must sincerely apologize for the fact that it has committed all sorts of atrocities by trampling on human dignity, but I believe that we can move on to a better country in the international community. It is great courage to recognize your fault, and I think it is something that can only come out of a great consciousness. Japan will be a paragon for this next generation of Japanese people if they are genuinely repentant of history mistakes, beg forgiveness, and be forgiven. Through such courageous actions, this history should not be repeated. Looking at Amanda's reaction, I was able to confirm again that everyone who lives in conscience feels the same emotion and pain. Thank you.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing an honest and genuine reaction to this show. Moreover, thank you for mentioning a bit if the historical fact about McKenzie and the Righteous Army as well. This show means more than just a well-made drama to Koreans.
I am a Korean American currently living in the US, and I watched this on Netflix since it first got uploaded there with my family. At first, I thought it would just be a fun fictional history drama. Then, even before getting through the half of the show, I realized that this show was to portray the life of people during that time as real as possible. It was cute and funny to see the five main characters’ relationship with each other; very touching and inspiring to see how the people including the main characters decided to save their country from being invaded; and so sad to see and feel the pain the characters had to go through, which made me think of the ancestors that actually lived and died during that period.
Ugh, I’m getting emotional, which means I’d better stop here. lol. Anyways, I really enjoyed this video. Thanks again for sharing!! (ps. I hope my comment doesn’t bore you or annoy you.)

It's just such a sad ending and what hurts is that the real history behind this drama. Joseon was never won over and Japan took over Asia essentially. Thus this meant that many deaths were in vain and even the efforts of Ae Sin would've been for nothing. Of course the US and Allied powers would allow Korea their liberation, but still hurts to know.

He has a hostage. He knows how determine the japanese soldiers are. He knows once he let go of the hostage, the soldiers will fight back. The only way was to hold on to the hostage until Ae Shin's carriage got away. It sucks but it make sense. It doesn't mean I like it but it make me love the whole drama even more.

It is by far my favorite Kdrama too, other than the production and the amazing cinematography just the way they showed the raw love for their country , the Patriotism and even though Eugene Choi died as an american he still did his best . The ending really broke my heart, I cried the whole night and went to class looking like a Zombie and people kept wondering if someone i knew passed away, I told them yu jin, dong mae, hee sung, Hina and a bunch of the righteous army did. I am glad they ended it this way tho because it seems inappropriate for it to end all happy and joyful considering the suffering and pain people lived at that time.

I have been waiting for your reaction vedio and now have watched it! Yesterday, while watching the final 2 episodes in a row I was countinously crying. Koreans who watched this drama feel really sad and frustrated about what happened inside Mr Sunshine because we know it is not a fiction but what really happened to this country and people. What we saw through this drama is just a start of what Japanese did to Joseon(Korea) for 35 years and there were a lot more cruel torture, oppression, and massacre from 1910 to 1945. When Eugene Choi decided to sacrifice himself to save Aeshin and Joseon in the train, I was sobbing like crazy. In this drama Go Aesin is a righteous soldier at the same time means "Joseon" as it is. So it was quite predictable all the others - Eugene, Dongmae, Heesung, Hina would end up dying and Aesin was the only survivor since she is Joseon. Japanese government have never admitted what they commited to Korea and still they're denying it. They don't teach the nation the right history and the truth, which is real tragedy. Thanks for sharing your review and I've enjoyed it!

Hi Krystal, thank you so much for your comment! I agree with you, Go Ae-sin represents the spirit of Joseon. She can't die. I wish I could have said more informative, history like you shared but I was too emotional from watching the final episode haha. I will try to share more real history in the future. But this is very important to me. Thanks so much, I always like to learn something new about Korean history.

Oh, you are so lovely and beautiful while you feel the sadness when you were watching the final scene of Eugene Choi.
Yes, He dies at that moment. there was no escape, Vala Mogulis. It made many many korean audience sad, too.
In fact, many people expected that, she would die and he would survive, and holding the memory of her, keep fighting against Japanese.
The Actual historical figure of the model of Eugene Choi, survived later than 2nd world war, retired honorably.
(Eugene Choi is based on Ki-Hwan Hwang, served in the 1st world war as an US army officer, later, joined to the Korean temporary government in China, in 1920's and 1930's)
however, the actual historical figure of Aeshin Ko died during her fight.
(It is said that, Aeshin Ko is based on a few of actual figures, Ja-Hyun Nam, Hee-Soon Yoon, and etc...)

Mr Sunshine - a true masterpiece. Stunning in all aspects...choice of cast, script, cinematography, costumes and props... Brilliant directing. Unrivalled by any kdramas past, present and future.
Kudos to everyone involved in the drama. Kudos to all the hauntingly beautiful OSTs. The songs are soul-moving. To be remembered. Always.
My heart goes out to Eugene Choi, Go Ae Sin, Gu Dong Mae, Hee Sung and Hina Kudo. Each tied to the other, the love that was not meant to be. Poor Dong Mae and his aching futile love for Ae Sin. Poor Hee Sung. Poor Hina. Poor Choi Yoo Jin. All love deprived. All hungered For affection. Love indeed came their way but fleeting.
Superb acting too by the others. Congrats Mr. Sunshine. You're simply the best!
I truly hope that this drama is recognised for what it is worth and garner awards that it really deserves.
The 2018 Korean Drama Awards was shockingly disappointing for its treatment of Mr Sunshine. Shame on you!
The independence we savour now should not be taken for granted.

From kings to slaves in Korea, young women of nobles, Koreans of different nationalities who left with hatred of Korea.
    All of them were medics.
The characters featured here are motivated by real characters ~~
Yujinchoi and Heesung have similar characters
Of course, I did a lot of adaptation.
Heesung's character is actually a real person who pretended to have a gambling debt and provided the independence funds of the medical soldiers ~~^^

*all the production crew so great to represented all the character, especially the side char that have a little but great story in them too, it make me cry a lot, beside the main story.
*this drama got me with so nice and great flow of story, thats make me want to know the true story in goggle (general term)
    * the nation will always have the dark side especially in the war situation. especially the nation that being colonized.
    * and i hope my nation someday can have the series drama history based like this, to remember that we now is lucky and have the peaceful day now is based on all the heroes that draw all their blood to get us the freedom, and can ignite the spirit of nationality.

Loved the entire show. Riviting, emotional and full of history we should know but do not about Korea. I wished that it had ended differently and that our five heroes made it out alive... but that was not to be... only Ae Sin makes it to continue the fight... one that was doomed. What great spirit the Korean people have. They deserved much better from the US and the world than they got.

    The cinematography was incredible.
I wish South African producers and actors would watch and realise that it doesn't always have to be about sex.
Eugene Xhoi & Ae Shin characters were so believable, great chemistry.

I've finished this drama a few days ago and i can say the last 4 episodes are so heavy. I'm so affected on all those who died on the drama (except for the evil ones haha) i dont know why. I guess i got too attached on the characters. Everyone was so good at portraying their characters. I love watching period/history korean dramas cause i get to see and learn what it's like before even though some stories are fiction. Such a powerful drama, it portrays the spirit of Korean, people to fight overwhelming odds, but it also made me think about the power of the human spirit to rise up and overcome tyrany, even in the face of great fear, love moves us to strive to be more than be opressed by our circumstances.

Such an amazing story was executed so beautifully.though i know as per history of the sad ending, i was still hopefull of a happier ending but they couldn't have ended it more perfectly than eugene dying. Koreans are smart , they know that the story itself is amazing and would attract a lot of people all over the world plus the cinematography, the artists who PERFORMED beyond expectation , the musical score, it makes it unnecessary to have kissing scene, the hugging means a lot. Majority of viewers looks for a moral lesson, how the actors & actresses portray their role & the story itself.

Here’s my more romantic interpretation of the 3 male leads:
Eugene’s Korean name 宥镇 means one who withdraws wrath and garrisons. He is the *Sunshine.
Dong Mae’s name 冬梅 is winter plum blossom so he is the *Snow.
Hee Sung’s name 熙星 means brilliant star so he is the *Star.
Together they make up Ae-Shin’s *SKY (also letter S). Even if there is a *black bird in Ae-Shin’s sky, she has these 3 men in her life protecting her and shining for her in her world. I feel sad for Hina. She wants to become the wind, free. She’s been helping people behind the scene, not visible but what a difference she made! They each represents the people who helped defend Joseon. A very impactful drama. We all should be grateful for what we have.

Most of Japanese still denies the war atrocities and follows the colonialism/imperialism theory. They claim that their colonization modernized Korean society, which is a massive insult and shock to Koreans. It's not difficult to see them justifying their ancestors' deed or being ignorant about what happened in the past.

    • @maragathm
      @maragathm 6 років тому +7

If we think about current Nations hatred of each we think India Vs. Pakistan or even Israel vs. Palestine because these get global publicity but in the Asian continent there is still simmering anger about Koreans and Chinese against the Japanese. The whole Korea problem right now is all because of the Japanese, Japan at it worst phase single handedly destroyed the sub continent not to mention committed the worst war crimes. But to ask for apology seems never going to happen because who is going to apologize to whom and for what, the real problem is that they deny it ever happened. Japanese are strange if you visit the country they are very polite almost too polite it is unsettling they don't like to confront the past. I you visit the Hiroshima Atom bomb site the memorial blames the Americans for everything that went wrong and doesn't accept that there was fault on both sides, they don't mention Pearl Harbour or admit to any fault in WW2.

    • @Garden577

More exactly, Koreans hate (if you want to use this word) what Japanese people did to so many innocent people. Their cruelty was beyond description. They were not human. Still, I'm chilled to the bone by the thought that their ancestors' cruel blood is still flowing in their bodies.
