I've had one of these for about a year and am similarly impressed with it. It's reliable (so far), easy to use, and the 1,000 Watt motor is more than adequate for my needs. I've used it drill and mortice soft and hard woods as well as drilling aluminium and steel (it drilled accurate 10mm diameter holes in 8mm thick steel with ease). The variable speed feature is great when switching between different materials and bit sizes. The wheel is neither better or worse than the conventional 3-spoke level style, just different ( I quite like it, although some may hate it!). The base clamp holds work very steady, and the aluminium fence with T-track-style clamps is also really useful. Like Mark, I also don't use the physical depth stop very much, but I find the digital depth stop excellent and can easily drill millimeter-accurate holes for dowels and mortices; the digital readout has a precision of 0.1mm, which may be attainable but exceeds my needs - with about 30 seconds of set-up I've been able to repeatedly drill holes that are accurate to with 0.5mm (verified with a vernier caliper). Overall, I'd agree that for the price, the PB40 is an excellent choice for hobbyists, DIY carpentry and joinery and metal work. It may not have the absolute precision needed by machinists but for most users it's easily accurate enough.
Excellent features for the price. Accurate as it is for woodwork. If you need absolute precision for engineering, you can upgrade the chuck to a 871050 SUPRA-S 1/2"-20. Not cheap. Search around and you can find one for around £85.
Hi Mark. I have owned my Draper pillar drill for thirty years and have found it invaluable for my aeromodelling. Your Bosch being newer has some nicer features. One of the things I have made for it is a raised platform with a hole in it, and various sizes of sanding bobbins. Ideal for sanding inside of formers. Nice review. Terry

Nice review. I do find it frustrating that manufacturers don't create products at the lower end of the price range with accuracy sufficient for engineering - it should be possible in this day and age. More faff certainly, with the 'antiques' with belts - but they are so well put together ... Getting hard to find nowadays though, and prices are going up, as people have come to appreciate their quality
I tottaly agree with what you are saying, the think that put me off getting an older belt driven drill was the size, the Bosch is very compact and I am a bit limited on space. Thanks for the comment

Now I found a deal on this for 229€ so I ordered one. About the play in the chuck it’s probably due to the upper bearing in the gear box. It’s a 8*12*8mm needle bearing and some videos I watched the change it for 2 pcs of 8*12*3,5mm ball bearings.

@@Hank_E Thanks for your time, Hank. I've found 1 or 2 now. It looks like changing the chuck, for a superior model from the same brand, Rohm, makes for quite a good improvement.
I’ve been looking at reviews for a drill press for the last two weeks. The one thing I have notice, when people talk about Chuck wobble war Chuck vibration on any of the models I have researched in the last couple weeks it’s apparent to me that those people do not know what they’re talking about. When a object rotates it creates send traffic force. That’s the force that makes objects draw toward the center of the spinning object. Obviously higher RPMs Cray Morrison traffic or force and therefore will draw the check or bit more towards the middle. In my observations over the last few weeks I have noticed a common theme. One the people that complain about Chuck wobble or non-precision holes being created don’t have their drill press securely mounted in the first place. Of course your machines going to Wawa if it’s not secure enough to keep it from vibrating. This isn’t just over this product but over several I have researched in the last couple of weeks.
I bought one of these last week, and let me tell you that the movement in the drilling shaft is shocking! After a bit of research, I stripped it and replaced the main shaft top needle roller bearing for a pair of ball bearing sets. Took a couple of hours to do, but I now have no movement at all!😊

Sadly, this bench drill press is not compatible in the States since we use 110v opposed to the 220v it needs. I was wondering if there is a U.S. version. It really looks like a nice machine.
Great review - has anyone used a third-party clamp to enhance the functionality? (I'm new to this, so would appreciate some pointers on the clamping part).
Am I right in thinking that there is no spring return to the handwheel? For 'sensitive' drilling, and with the normal pecking action (to eject swarf) the star-wheel (three pronged lever) with spring return is the normal. You can feel the pressure and action, and releasing the down pressure executes the peck. The long stroke means that you know where the 'bite' point is. It is clear from the video that considerable force is required to move the wheel, and a change of grip needed to retract. If I had to use this I would be forced to modify it... This is a Bosch 'green' tool- their domestic level. The 'blue' professional range is of much better quality.

Clamp or chuck? If chuck then there's several videos on YT swapping in improved chucks.
