This is the Bellambi Lane level crossing at Bellambi, New South Wales. It is located on the South Coast line in the northern suburbs of Wollongong. Part 1 of the video can be seen here • Level Crossing, Bellam...
Four new Western Cullen Hayes electronic bells were added to the pedestrian crossing on December 14, 2019. The bells are mounted inside custom made housing which were manufactured by Metwest Engineering. There is a bell positioned on both sides of each track, operating in conjunction with the pedestrian signals for the track concerned. There were no other changes to the pedestrian signals or the road crossing.
The night operation of the crossing is quite interesting. The road crossing bells continue to be switched off between 10pm and 6am, however the new pedestrian bells still sound during that time.
At the end of the video are some of my old photographs of the original signals, mostly taken during the 1980's. The crossing has an interesting history, with the original signals being installed some time around 1960. Both signals had WRRS bases, GRS/WRRS Type B gate mechanisms and McKenzie & Holland lights. The crossing had no bells and the gates covered the entire width of the road, this was due to the signals being manually operated from Bellambi signal box which was positioned on the station, overlooking the crossing. The pedestrian crossing was protected by two mechanically operated wicket gates, with no protection provided in the middle of the crossing for pedestrians exiting from the station.
In early 1982 the original McKenzie & Holland lights were replaced by new Westinghouse ones. In October 1985 Bellambi signal box was closed due to the line being upgraded for electrification, with the crossing being converted to automatic operation. The gate on the eastern signal was shortened to cover only half the width of the road, while the western signal was moved further away from the road, possibly for future road widening plans which never eventuated. Both signals were also fitted with new Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bells.
At the same time the pedestrian crossing received a substantial upgrade, with the wicket gates being replaced by two separate pairs of pedestrian signals, one pair for each track. Each signal had a GRS semaphore gate mechanism and GEC red light. In the mid 1990's the GRS mechanism on the eastern pedestrian signal was replaced by a pedestal type mechanism similar to those used in parking lots, it can be seen in the photo at 13:55. I'm not sure of the reason for this change, it may have been due to issues with the GRS mechanism caused by vandalism, or possibly a trial of new equipment.
The pedestrian signals were replaced by the current swing gates in the late 1990's, and the Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bell on the eastern side of the crossing was replaced by a teardrop bell around the same time, with no further major changes until the crossing was upgraded with the current signals in 2006.
    Filmed on March 1, 2020.
