  • With the Howard 80 rotovator finally repaired, and the dexta back in action, it's time to plough, rotovate and prepare some ground for a small vegetable patch to test out the machines. Will the stubborn Howard play ball at last?

    It's already just a little bit too dry. When the ground has the right amount of moisture there shouldn't be any dust when you rototill.
    My dad had a commercial rototilling business for over 40 years. He used the shovel method to test it. A soils engineer taught me a different way with my hands to get the same results.
    Take a handful of loose dirt and squeeze it in your hand, then open your hand and it should stick together. Then lightly touch that ball of dirt with your finger and it should easily crumble.
    If it doesn't stick together then it's too dry. If it changes shape without crumbling then it's too wet.
    Hopefully when you make your last pass you'll have the tailboards down so that they can make it glassy smooth.
    Our customers always loved that glassy smooth look.
    Just a suggestion.

      Kerry, thanks very much! To be honest I'm a real novice when it comes to tilling so your advice is really appreciated 🙂👍. My late father would have done a lot of it in the past as he was a veg grower but I was never involved. I'm a bit impatient unfortunately when it comes to jobs like thst, but ill take your advice for 2024. Thanks for taking the time to pass your experience on 🙂👍

    I remember the old man doing 4 and acres with old Ford 4000. First before the 4000 it was a 130 Massey Ferguson but he said it was no use it had no guts lol. The 4000 seemed to be a good tractor for the plowing just right weight wise. He would plow it then we would be in to lift the stone's throw them in a box. Then tip them. Then he go back in with the discs. Then the harrows normally turnip or potatoes. Although he did plant barley as well a few times. Think you did a grand job think it worked well. I seen you lifting the stone's there was 3 of us so it wasn't a bad job lol. We would put the dung on in the frost normally before the old man plowed he said it was the best way to get it into the ground. Now I don't know I just went along with he was the farmer am a mechanic lol.

      Those 4000s are great tractors. The 3 cylinder engine was considered one of Fords best, and was far less prone to cavitation than the 4 cylinders.

    Dave put the wife on the tractor while you pick up those wonderful rocks then have here build a beautiful rock wall in her spare time as a head of the garden

      You'd build a lot of rock walls with the land we have here! Thanks again for supporting the channel and taking the time to comment 🙂

    The soil looks rich but where did you get those rocks? I'm glad they didn't bust up all your hard work on the rototiller.
    Take care Dave

      This place is full of stones! We also have a lot of protruding rock further down the farm. Even up on the good land, there are areas where the plough skims the top of rocks. That's why it's best to buy any tilling equipment from outside the area!!

    Do you know that the dexta will drive that rotavator done 30 acres for spuds every year they are or where a great we tractor nice soil you've got dave how did you fair with the cat digger good videos

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому

      Howard, another viewer did suggest putting it on it, but I was unsure as to now it would work out without live drive. Was your dexta a super or standard? Plus the 80 inch may be a bit heavy for it. My father did a huge amount of reclaiming years ago with a major and howard 70. The ground up this end of the farm is quite good, but very stony. I'll get back on the CAT shortly. Work was progressing but I hit a stumbling block with the rams on the blade. I'm hoping to get it sorted shortly though as I badly need an excavator. Other than that, and needing a digging bucket, it's ready to roll. Thanks for watching!

    Good job, why not just set the back bucket down and back into the compost pile like a loader?

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Fred! I tried it, but the best of the stuff is further back in the heap, and also the link box doesn't tip quite enough to get it all out. I'll throw the loader on during the week and I'll wipe it out in an hour 👍🙂
