    Thank you sir.. after I saw your video about solving the problem on this JVC deck, I was able to fix my deck Technics RS-TR252 and be able to come back to life again, by replacing one transistor that has been shorted, and one resistor that has been cut off on the power supply block.
    Nice Videos, nice Tutorials, and nice tools..
    Thank you..

    Very good troubleshooting sir. The key thing that many should learn from this video is patience, persistence, and knowledge. I love the fact that you clued into the fact that the regulator IC was being shut down and did not jump to the wrong conclusion that the regulator was simply bad. Critical thinking is key to repairing equipment. Damage like this and having multiple problems makes troubleshooting exponentially harder but your expertise reveals that you can logically work through the issues and get the product working. Great work sir !!

    The trials & tribulations of a cassette deck technician! Appreciate you doing this sleuthing nonetheless. Admittedly I can only follow your work up to a certain degree, but I lear a little bit more each time I watch your vids. Thank you for fixing what is a cheapy-weepy deck that likely most techs wouldn’t bother with.

    Ive always loved the idiots that oil the belts and the rear slip clutches on these .... they really mess them up .. takes forever to clean it off .. as for the 8-track players i have a nice pioneer 8-track recorder here, im in to electronics repair and i have collected records and jukeboxes since the 80's i have loads and loads of cassette decks , RCA Selectavision CED players , CED Discs, laser Disc players and laser discs .. and of course Super and standard 4 head hifi VHS systems... I love to watch your videos my friend , im in London Ontario Canada . thank you for posting , i used to have one deck like this one and wow some one dumped beer or something all over it , took me hours to get it back in shape to resell . Look forward to your next video

    I got a Pioneer EX9000 from e-bay at a ridiculous low price because the seller said the display didn't work. Upon recieving it, I disassembled and found that the ground pin for the FL display had gone cold, so resoldering fixed that and voila, a perfectly working unit. So many times on the stuff from the 90's, the problems are cold solder. Unless, of course, if it hasn't been dropped.

    I once came across a Mistubishi VCR which not only had the WD-40 treatment on the circuit board, but also what appeared to be remnants of a chocolate biscuit smeared over the head drum and guides, hair wrapped around the capstan shaft, and a dead cockroach in the power supply module. When I took it apart, a couple of coins and an earring fell out of the casing.
    After a major clean-up, removal of the metal objects, and a power supply repair, the machine worked sweetly again.
    The things people do to electronics!

      *** The machine was a 6-head Hi-Fi stereo LP VCR with jog shuttle, insert and audio dub, made around the early-to-mid 90's - not an el- cheapo crap mono 2-head SP only model so it was worth resurrecting for a price.

      Tell me about it. Coins and jewelry were common in VCR. A few years ago I got a call from someone wanting to kive me a few old VCRs. I accepted, and met them in front of their apartment building. They brought me 2 VCRs out and I put them in my car. I didn't look at them for a few weeks, and I serviced one, got it going. When I serviced the second I heard something rattling when I turned it on it's side. I opened it up and found a gold chain inside. I contacted the person I got it from and asked if they were missing anything and they said they bought it at a thrift store. So I scored a nice heavy men's gold chain worth about 2 grand

    To be honest, I'd rather work on something a bit longer and achieve success, because this one was really tricky, than to have to say 'no I couldn't fix it' and not been able to charge a bit of money. A challenge with an accomplishment is always nicer than to get defeated... guess it's a matter of pride.

    Bought mine new in the mid 90's and it still looks mint. I just dug it out to put with my third system and it powered right up. It hasn't been played in over 10 years. Mine had a similar dent right in the middle on top out of the box. I never bothered to take it back because the town was a 2 hour round trip away. I rolled the dent out of it eventually. I bought mine because of the pitch control to correct a few old Led Zeppelin bootleg concert tapes I had. A lot of air inside the chassis but it functions well and sounds fine.

    It reminded me a problem of a first British passenger jet, the Comet ☄️.
    (What a name they picked!!..)
    The plane was originally designed with square shaped windows. After couple of flights cracks would developed near 90 degree corners. And these brand new "air balloons" one after another blew up in midair. Until they opted out for the round windows in the fuselage.

    I think I can top one with your jvc repair .I had a teac reel to reel 5300 series and there was it seemed like an oil explosion all over in the mechanism and and the belts were swimming in the oil and it was every time the capstan drive belt was all full of oil and the heads were also full of it people think oil is good for everything belt rejuvination and head cleaner . I had to replace all the heads and the belts and it was a real pain and he said I use oil to clean everything and I said it is not for rubber or cleaning heads and he said if it is good for metal it is good for heads and belts .people need to learn what is good and bad great job as always great video

    Interesting how you did the electronics troubleshooting, as that was way beyond my technical level; I'm more of a mechanical guy.
    With that said, a similar unit, JVC TD-W309 is recently making a whirring/grinding sound when cassettes are played back. I've eliminated the cassettes themselves as the noise source, as I opened the door, placed my finger on the sensor, pressed PLAY, and got the same whirring/grinding sound.
    I opened up the unit, used some very light silicon lubricant on motor and mechanism. All sounded quiet after reassembly, then the grinding noise came back after a minute or two.
    I'd love to hold onto this unit, as I am transferring the audio cassettes to digital, where the dynamic range, and pitch control, makes this cassette deck a primo for doing the digital transfers.
    If anyone got a suggestion to the cause and solution to the playback mechanism noise, please drop me a note as a reply to this comment. Thanks!

    Nice job! Yeah someone likely gave it a good beating! I'm surprised the deck chassis didn't get wrecked. Those boards look kinda lousy. Those ribbon tape like conductor cables suck they are so fragile I had to completely remove the small one because the one end of it got ripped off by the connector on the main board I would love to know where I could get replacement cable like that LOL and of course be able to prep the ends as well ... one thing I have discovered to the resins used in the solder is mildly conductive and you know what that means to some circuits LOL anyway I enjoy your videos very much thank you for sharing your electronic skills with us average folks and novices out here

    11:18 single sided PCBs are more prone to cracked solder joints since the solder and mounted component don't have the added mechanical reinforcement provided by the through holes on a double layer board. The traces often lift super easy too so you have to be careful when bending components over FR2 boards aren't the most robust that's for sure. On a positive note you can easily remove components from these boards with solder wick or a solder sucker when servicing so it's a double edged sword I guess.
    I usually break out my Hakko FR 300 for double sided through hole stuff. I used to be able to do it with solder wick and lots of patience but that tool spoiled me :-).

    if i'm not mistaken, those cutouts actually makes the board more rigid. the cracks were probably made by the machine that punched those holes.

    • @12voltvids

      More Ridgid ? I don't think so. Less material less able to withstand shock.

    • @michaelfreiberg8057
      @michaelfreiberg8057 2 роки тому

      @@12voltvids more rigid, not more able to wistand shock. try it on a useless circuit board. it will be harder to bend. of course, provided that the cutouts are not to big or close to the edges. you can even see it on those knifes with cutouts on the blade. they are more rigid

    Right after you tested the voltage regulators, then wiggled the board and it lit up then went out. I knew the board was cracked and those cracks are always right around the impact area. I'd say something was dropped on top of it or it fell on top of something. No circuit board like that is designed for that kind of impact. I've seen heavier boards than that crack. Good repair.

      When I was in the business 15 years ago I wouldn't have been happy with people giving away trade secrets, and showing tricks that took years to learn. The service business was a closed knit brotherhood, and we would help each other out, but not reveal our skills to do it youselfers or to our immediate competition in the same town. That was the way it was, because paid repairs put food on the table. I do this now because the service industry is basically dead. There are a few shops still around, but I really don't care about them. I would never use their services (because I can do it myself) and I make more showing the tricks of the trade to others that want to learn how to troubleshoot and repair these old analog audio pieces.
      Even with the odd nut that has to tell me that he blocks ads I still make enough from those that let the ads play, or subscribe through patreon or paypal to make it profitable to do this.So I continue. I have over 1100 videos up now.

      I once dared a friend to piss on an electric fence when he was drunk. He did it to prove he was a man. Everything was fine for a few seconds and then ZAP. I laughed so hard I dam near pissed my pants as did everyone else that was there. I still laugh about it years later. Another friend I convinced that the phone line only had 9 volts on it and it was ok to strip the wire with his teeth. He found out what 50 volts across the fillings feels like. That was another time I dam near pissed myself I was laughing so hard. I could write a book with stories of pranks I pulled with electricity when I was younger. Like charging a 10uf cap to about 300 volts in school and then calling someone name and tossing it to them to catch. Photo flash caps from disposable cameras were always fun. Some of the pranks involving photo flash tubes, balloons and acetylene or propane gas were darnright dangerous and stupid but they did make a big bang when set off. So were the ones involving nuts, bolts, and the white phosphorous tip from strike anywhere matches. Jeez I am surprised I survived my youth with all the dumb things I did with my friends.

    Great video about a nice cassette deck. And some repair man. I can imagine that somebody else thought it could not be repaired. I have almost the same deck, But then the JVC TD-W318. And that one has some strange problems too. For one the right deck only wants to play if there are 2 cassettes in the decks and the left one is finished. Just found that out by accident. :-) The right deck does not react to any of the button presses. Nothing happens. But if the left deck plays both sides then the right deck comes on and plays both sides of the tape as well. I think there's a button that's stuck. And the belts are slipping but maybe they can be cooked....Keep up the great video's. This particular one helps me to know what to expect if I open mine. :-D

Still have to do the belts tho, because one of them sometimes squeels a little. But they play perfectly in tune, so that's a good start. Just bought this deck not so long ago at a shop called 'Used Products'. For something like 7 euro, if my memory serves me well. :-) Just because I still have a lot of nice cassette tapes, some from people who just didn't use them anymore. A lot a great albums still worth listening to on cassette. Why not.

Unfortunately, with this deck, it's not as easy as taking a measurement and simply replacing the roller. They are a special roller with center plastic spools that clip down into the actuator arm. When they were available they sold the pinch rollers and arm as an entire assembly. Really wish I could buy a set for both decks

      When I went to TCI (formerly known as RCA institute) for my Associates degree in Consumer Electronics Servicing, They taught us a trick for finding cracks or improper solder joints by putting a light (kind of like a light table) under the board and if light goes through it will indicate one of those problems and it will also reveal crack lines as well. PS: by seeing that dent in the middle of the top cover that if there was a PC board I kind of guess that it cracked the board or created a short from the cover to one of the solder joints.

    It's a funny anecdote because it's true. There are people who will do that, and then they would wind up paying more than they needed to in repairs as a result or have to replace it with a new unit because the cost was too prohibitive to repair the original problem plus the problem that the owner would not admit to causing.

      When I worked in broadcast for a few years as an intern, and then master control as a temp I worked with a guy that would beat the crap out of 100,000 cameras. OK, they were old, and we threw them around taking them to remotes and stuff but one of the producer / directors would beat the living crap out of our CEI 280 cameras. The engineers were always working on they nursing them along. You can see these cameras in operation on my Chuck Berry video, as I worked on that production as a cameraman, and the camera I was running looked particularly bad that day. Registration errors all over the place, it looked like the red tube was falling out (probably because it had been smacked around so many times just to get a picture out of it)
      We even had to put a note on one of the 16mm projectors to "load gently" because a few people were pretty rough on the equipment at that station.

    Holes, in the PCB, are part of the design issue. The other one is the use of cheap-ass phenolic as the PCB substrate. I have seen this issue before in past repairs. Other failure modes are micro breaks around the pads, from over stress. Phenolic PCB's are absolutely garbage for resisting mechanical stresses.
    Good job hunting this one down. Too bad it was previously violated by an idiot. Ah well...
    Cheers,

That thing looks straight out of the ministry of crap design - amazing to think that this was the same JVC who produced all those superbly-built VCRs of the early 1980s. Shame really because the tape mechanisms look nice, but the build of this thing is not what you expect from a quality Japanese manufacturer.

      Doubt that. They were where the small interface boards were cut from. They make a big board and then cut it for the small ones. So the entire board can be run at once

    Can I also make an educated suggestion? The first and foremost thing I would do which I do out of normal practice is to clean and demagnetize the tape transport of each incoming deck with unknown conditions to save your tapes.

    My TEAC V-2RX stopped recording on one channel, The VU meter shows both channels normally with the monitor switched to "source" but when switched to "tape" it shows that the left channel is completely mute, not low volume or distorted but completely silent. I've tried different tapes and it still doesn't record on the left channel. Other pre recorded tapes play fine on both channels. I can't find any play/record switch inside that I could clean. Could you give any thoughts on this?

    Hi Dave! I was wondering some things regarding tape decks, maybe you can give me some input:
    a) I have a TEAC deck wich I repaired (new roller + new belt), now I want to transfer some old tapes. I have an audio interface wich allows XLR and 1/4" plug inputs. Since the teac only has RCA output, wich would be better? a RCA to XLR or a RCA to 1/4" plug cable adapter?
    b) I was wondering: Can a tape deck be modified to add XLR outputs? I was looking over the internet and couldn't find any reference to such mod. If you could do a video about it, it would be awesome.

    There's a lot of expensive air in one of those things, lol. How in the world were you able to repair those tiny closely spaced traces without bridging any of them?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому +3

      I probably could be a pretty good surgeon had I gone down that road.
      Good powerful magnifiers helps. I have fixed many boards with hairline fractures and close spaced traces. I tell you something though. It doesn't get easier as I get older.

      At the end of last year, I had cataract surgery in both eyes and it was kind of botched. I got multi-focal implants yet the results were excellent distance in my right eye and that's it. Blurry mid-vision and lost all near vision in both eyes. I had tri-focals before surgery and still have to wear them after. So to do close things like you were doing (and another hobby of mine was repairing model steam engines specifically brass ones with gnat sized screws) I used to take my glasses off to see things up close. I can no longer do that, so I've stopped doing both things. That's why I'm all the more impressed anyone can do that so well. If I had done it, there would've been a big blob of solder bridging all the traces and the magic smoke would've come out upon power up. Great job - I enjoy watching you do it!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому

      I had Lasik about 8 years ago. I used to be able to focus down to 1/4" but the down side was I could see to about 18" then everything went blurry. Lasik fixed my distance on both eyes but they told me I would need reading glasses.I am not good from about 2 feet to infinity. I still use the computer without glasses, but do use then for fine work on electronics and terminating fiber optic at work on my day job. Those old glasses I put on for repair work is a pair of my wifes old non prescription glasses. They work fine for me. Her prescription bi-focals are pretty strong. I know the feeling though. Things up close are not as good as they were even 2 years ago. but as you can see by the videos I can still see relatively good close up with the cheaters.

    Nice resurrection on this one! I own a JVC TD W717, a very similar dual well model built on the same chassis. There were a few variations built on this platform, as I am sure you know. I am the original owner, since '96. I realize that spraying lube of any type into the tape mechanism is a moronic move, that is typically general knowledge. But as a tinkerer, what about the little motors these decks are littered with? What if one of the motors starts making a little more running noise than I am used to hearing, after 25 years of use? Is it ok to lube the motor spindles? Or would it be better to clean them out with Deoxit sprays first and see if that helps? Plays great, sounds great, I just want the motors to run as quietly as they used to. I haven't opened her up to take a closer look yet, but I thought I'd ask here to get some preemptive clues before going in.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому +1

      I have done videos on some of those little motors capstone motors and so forth where I take the motor out and take it right apart got to pry the back off and you can get the rotor and everything out so that you can move the bearing at the front and at the back. These motors typically use a small stintered bearing which will hold the oil quite nicely but you got to get it apart to do it if you lube just the front bearing at the spindle you're only doing half the job. Some of these motors can be tough to take apart because the end cap is crimped but with a little work the back can generally be popped off. I've got a few videos where I show this being done to a capstan motor and this will greatly extend the life.

    I have a JVC WT 309 that operates in excellent condition, and thank you for what was under the hood and areas of what needs attention. I’m curious between the 309 and the 317.
    I knew right off right from the issues with that upper board that you had numerous plane cracks and have fixed traces also.
    I also have a Sparkomatic cassette adapter for 8trk.
    Little help: I have a Yamaha cassette recorder KX 200U where I have speed fluctuations in the motor itself. I tried the trimpot hole on the back of the motor to get correct tape speed, but still have issues with speed stabilization. Any clues, if possible. Thx

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому

      Monte Fullmer
      If the motor speed is fluctuating it is one of 3 thing's. Check the supply voltage and see if that is stable. These are DC motors so if the supply is changing so will the speed. If that is OK it could be a dirty control in the motor or a bad motor.
