The real roots of youth violence | Craig Pinkney | TEDxBrum

- Video games and hip hop music often take the rap for inciting violence in the young, but urban youth specialist and lecturer Craig Pinkney knows that is far from the whole story. Craig shares his experience in engaging disaffected and violent youth, going beyond systems to find the root causes. He also calls for this to move from ‘not my problem’, to an issue with much greater community support.
Craig Pinkney is a Criminologist, Urban Youth Specialist, Lecturer and Director of Real Action UK - a charitable outreach organisation based in Birmingham who specialise in working with disaffected youth. Notable projects include: ‘Don’t Get Gassed’ a national anti-knife crime campaign which has over 50,000 views on UA-cam. Craig is well-known for working with some of the cities most challenging young people, potentially high-risk offenders, victims of gang violence and youth who are deemed as hard to reach. Through mentoring, discussion, advocacy, sport, media, film and faith-based interventions, he believes giving a platform to young people will raise attainment and promote positive social change. Craig also lectures full time at University College Birmingham, specialising in youth violence, urban street gangs, extremism, trauma and black men’s desistance, and is part of the EU Gangs Project.

Young men need Fathers and families need to be strengthened.
homeboy, you are preaching to the choir! beautiful presentation, we absolutely are responsible for these kids.
Fantastic! My best moments: 1. "Invisiblility" - it is an incredibly useful diagnostic tool to remember!, 2. passion, 3. toes in the nose for humor and 4. badge in the lift for re-enactment! :)
I do talk to the youth all the time, and that "invisibility" factor I realized subliminally. You have nailed it for me! This talk doubled my energy to continue. I am on the right path!
Thank you for this summary. It really helped me nail the core elements of what spoke to me so deeply.
Im currently attending Colorado Technical University. We have been asked to listen to your videos so we can make a positive impact for the Youth. Thank You for your videos
Amazing lecturer; REAL TALK.
this was so powerful i pray more people develop such a mindset
No one ones to accept responsibility on several levels. That’s why the violence is so rampant
That was a great presentation,Its great that someone actually raises awareness on this subject .Things have been going crazy with youth gangs here in Greece, thank god not in my neighborhood but you should always be careful. There have been approximately maybe more than 1.700 cases that Greek courts face involving teenagers
Needed this- tired of crying and more tired of feeling helpless. I can't make sense of this and I can't ignore this.
Someone just got stabbed here. He was young, a footballer-, was playing football in the UK- his whole life ahead of him- GONE. A week before Christmas.
A month or so earlier- two young men got shot and killed. One was 27, the other was celebrating his 22nd Birthday.
I feel for the victims family and also the people that are killers and their family.
This is a generation that is getting killed or incarcerated. It is soul destroying to witness.
Thank you for this.
🙏🏾💗
Its great to see mentors like us teach functionality to the youth. Our community needs us .
He's right.
Look at the vast majority of school shootings and suicides in the youth. The root cause is bullying and feeling excluded. Then when one snaps, people are so clueless about how it happened.
No. The root cause is spoiled, catered to, inflamed egos using violence and the threat of it to hide their fragility behind.
Big respect craig real talk!
Craig, thank you for speaking up our schools and parents need to listen to your video but, most of all they need to listen to these problems in our communities and schools.
Excellent presentation from Craig which resonates beyond our local communities in the U.K.
what an excellent talk every teacher needs to hear this.
Thank you Sir. I have been trying to point out this situation and no one seems to have ears. It's a blessing at long last to hear the words l have been saying to others.
Until youth/gang violence is treated as a socioeconomic or early development issue the violence will continue
Decisions....
In Glasgow it is treated as a public health problem . This has created a substantial decrease in knife crime
It's a parenting issue. Parent(s) show no/little love and don't take a active role in thier child's development . A lot parents unfortunately want to be there child's friend instead and are afraid to say NO.
@@johnmilligan6605 Thanks for sharing that information, I'll be sure to look into it.
Mainly a development issue regarding early childhood and teen influences. Poor kids can be morally upright and rich kids can be morally bankrupt after all.
I'm 63 now - Even back when I was in my early teens, school buses have always been a hotbed of problems where punks were in close proximity to "good" kids. There may be many reasons with kids acting as they do, having to do with a bad home life or external factors. In some cases, they just take pleasure in violence for the "rush" provided to their brain. It's a sad situation, and in many cases, they may only come to the realization after they reach adulthood. And no, I was not one of those that gave any trouble on school buses or anywhere else.
Ok boomer
If you weren’t one of them, why are you explaining the reasons behind what they do?
Ok You don’t think broken homes contribute to someone acting in a negative way or no supervision or guidance in their home?
That rush is better then anything in the world boa 😏
No one ever talks about Racism and Social problems.
Powerful messages. Hope that you continue to be a catalyst for change.

"In me is screaming to never trust my dad. Ever again. To never trust anyone. Ever again. I need to do better too. Absent father, everyday you're becoming more and more present in my life. Don't stop trying. Love, The Carcass Left Behind."
This is a poem about an Absent Father, but it seems it could be a poem about Youth Violence.
When I was a young child in third grade, I looked at my class, and I was disgusted because everybody talked negatively about and wanted nothing to do with one of the students because she watched Dora the Explorer. I made friends with her, and everybody looked down on me and talked negatively about me because I was friends with that person nobody wanted to be friends with. I was also teased by my dad because he thought that I had a crush on this girl. I didn't, and I just wanted to do what was right. This girl also thought that I had a crush on her, and she had a crush on me so I was glad when my stepsister came to live with us because then she could be friends with her, and I didn't have to deal with her making love notes for me anymore. It was sweet of her to do that, but it kind of sketched me out. I have made other friends like this, and I still have some of those friendships today. When I first heard about racism, I was disgusted for the same reason that I was disgusted by my class wanted nothing to do with this girl that I was friends with. I live in Canada, and racism against the indigenous people here is the biggest problem we have with racism, and I will dedicate my life to stop it because it's not right, and it very much disgusts me.
Some of my theories is that, people sometimes inflict pain on others because they want to feel more powerful. They may feel so small in the hands of their own abuser, so they attack others to feel like they are in control of the situation. I haven’t read any theories or anything but thats just me spitballing this
Crazy to think i've seen this customer a few times, can't believe he's doing a ted talk

i AGREE 150% WITH YOU. i HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH TROUBLE YOUTH NEARLY 50 YEARS.
How could other person kill someone? How could a human being kill another human being?
They're those who say: what we see on television, what we see on our computer can have a tremendous impact on our behavior and in many cases bring out the much worse possible scenario. Violence in the media poses a threat to public health, as it leads to increased violence and aggression in the real world. The relationship between media violence and aggression in the real world is moderated by the nature of the media content, the characteristics and social impact on the person exposed to that content. We have to knows that media construct our reality and how we think and behave. The truth is that when we watch movies with violence act, we don't actually Think that it's affecting to our mind. Subconsciously, we just imagine «what if I was like that». Honestly, how often after watching movies with spies, you also imagine that you were a spy?
Be careful, be safe.
Yes brum town bad boys!! Very deep and strong message

Did my sba on youth violence and this interview got me snd A
The only thing I want to know is how to get a person that acts like they didn't set you up for a violent crime then tries to act like they are trying to help me. I hate two faced women, but one thing I can't stand is a two faced man. Practically unheard of in my circle except for one person. I wish this person can sit down with someone and let them talk to him about accepting responsibility for their actions and moving on because aint no forgiveness here.
This is very deep, I sometimes have suicidal thoughts but I have my friends and Girlfriend to talk to (yes I'm bi) and they help me with my depression. For anyone who is seeing this and if you have suicidal thoughts, please go to talk to someone that you trust, it can really help.
There are invisible forces that are not mentioned in this prsentation good as it is. Environment shapes the mind. If you want to find the cause look at the environment. There are other points...but I don't wanna lecture.
Its great to see mentors like us teach functionality to the youth. Our community needs us and it starts with great leadership. Good work !
This man is a good person.
Moving and passionate as always.
arrogance and ignorance breed violence .... isn't it that simple ?
This was very beneficial thank you
Army are needed. Nuff said. Special military prisons. Its gone to far to try to reason with words.
We definitely have to get down to the root causes of crimes and get help for these young people.
Root cause is all of us being in our own bubbles and allowing the powers that be control us
Root cause is low IQ, poor impulse control, broken homes, broken culture, and endless excuses for violent behavior.
thank you
I had the privaledge of being taught by Carlton Howson. A very inspirational and intelligent man.
This guy came to my school.
Maybe if we held the parents accountable for their children's actions maybe then they'd "parent" and instill respect for everyone. That's the biggest reason why teens commit crimes, it all starts at home.
I'm reminded of Patrick J Buchanan's deathless observation. "The cause of crime is criminals."
Racism and a pattern of an sick society teaches that. Plus add the denial of opportunity and a lack of empathy and patience, can and do cause a problem with any age.
Is the problem not on kids having kids???
And what about choice?
@@nurtured-channel2953 What about we becoming a solution? And if not shut up and mind your business.

absent fathers , main cause of it ,,,
due to having absent fathers, mothers are forced to work extra hard and sort of over look the childs emotional needs since their basic needs are met.
That's not always the case though, Karl Lokko (Lox) one of the most recognisable London gang leaders, grew up with 2 hard working parents, never even swore infront of their son and was amazing to him, what caused him to become a gang member/leader was him thinking it was the right thing protecting his members, you should watch his Ted talk
@@Khieru nothing is "always the case".....
Why does nobody talk about how similar it is to chimp behavior? The social dynamic, the power displays, the territoriality, the patrolling, the unpredictability, the raw violence, the irrationality, the group size and composition… I know it sounds inflammatory, comparing these youths to chimps… but the parallel is undeniable
the truth is we need milions of parents to protect their kids and the grand childern and get involved
This is happining in America to and in mexico
I think majority of kids & teens are spoil rotten. Simple!
I agree
Man There’s about millions of reasons. Let’s start by destroying the rap music, starts with parents absolutely
THIS IS CALLED.... DEMONS LET LOOSE IN PLANET EARTH.. 🙏🏿.. LORD HAVE MERCY ON US ❤️🙏🏿❤️

How is this my problem? I only care for those that are a victim of violence. People need to tell these youths, life is about choices & consequences. People are not honest to the youth anymore, they are babying them and down playing what they do. For example: Someone can murder someone and people will make the youth murderer the victim instead of the suspect that on purposely killed someone. I do not get it.
Youth join gangs because there is no father at home to stop them. They stay in gangs because there are no jobs in the cities. The educational system in many big cities sucks. Lower taxes and regulations and restore the father to minority homes. The family needs to restored and the economy needs to be healthy so young men can have jobs.
Jesus be with you all!Amen!
I think everyone misses the obvious causes. It's clearly bad upbringing, lack of discipline from an early age and then the influx and attraction of gang culture to young males. A lot of young males just want to appear hard, want people to be scared of them and they also want to be flash and make money. The gang culture appeals to all of that. Let's blame ourselves, but blame ourselves for the right reasons.
Yes big Akh, let them know

Training social worker here previous youth worker I agree with all you videos…sick of tokenistic service user feedback, I want service user to make a real change in there own life’s….i to marry up academic work and real life work!
My parents taught us to love others. My parents took us to church because they knew, they did not have ALL the answers. God and Allah and Buddha said don't hurt others, for any reason. I worked at a reform school. The kids were violent after years of abuse and neglect. They needed love. Their father left. He went to jail. He was absent. They were angry at him, and their Mum and then everyone. Here in the US there are far too many broken families and their is NO community to make up for it. I have seen one culture not accept another. Many. People from one nation bought four homes next to each other, not one by one next to "others". Could be any ethnicity. Love one another. Men, stop giving up on your kids. And neighbors, be neighbors to everyone. How many of my neighbors ignore the old white guy? Many. I say Hi. Oh Hi they reply. Nice weather eh? Yes. Have a great day! Kids too. Hey kid. how are you?
God Allah and buddha did not say don't hurt others for any reason !In fact all three gave a list of reasons when you can feel justified in torturing others .

Certain human behaviors deserve death. Violence is the result of hyper-competition, be from the family or the neighborhood, or lack of resources.
The Unwanted child is the core of urban violence, unwanted children come from homes that are poor.
Poor in material resources and poor in emotional resources.
There you have it. Violent people finish first wherever you go. Take a look at Jordan Peterson before jumping to conclusions.
I grew up in a violent city. From 1990 to 94 I was 15 to 19 and it was literally the most violent period to be a teenager in American history. Back then you were 5x more likely to be assaulted than you are now. There were kids who drove around targeting people with baseball bats, this was a past time. I remember being chased and jumped. Nobody talks about it. I remember walking downtown and seeing blood on the sidewalks. I saw a guys eyeball just laying next to a broken window and pointing to it and saying " damn that's a guys eyeball!" You get hospitalized and disfigured with a bat "Well, he shouldnt have been roaming the streets at night"
Sorry but it’s not that complicated. It’s all about culture and having parents that have values and they teach their children to dress properly and speak properly and behave a certain way and be responsible and do their schoolwork. They know where their kids are and who they’re hanging out with and they guide them with lessons of right and wrong and responsibility and culture and class. They teach them how to respect their neighbors their elders their women. It’s culture.
So we should sit and wait?
