I just finished the book and I can't believe I didn't realize the bar was a gay bar until now 😅
I believe the boys in the attic were his memories in that he knew his mom was involved with those other children’s disappearance from the lake. He mentioned at one point that the attic was where he kept memories he didn’t want to address,
I thought night time was like Olivia’s inner hunter instinct so it didn’t even occur to me that she had multiple personalities

.The boys in the attic were memories from Ted’s childhood and the little boys who were stolen from the lake, I believe. He said at one point he thought the mother must have mistaken Lulu for a boy because she only took boys.
The boys in the attic were the murdered kidnap victims of the mother, buried in the forest. Great review, thank you for opening up about your struggles. My question is, did Ted kill the bug man?? Also, I agree with another commenter, you sure are working that yellow color!
1. You’re gorgeous. . . Love the makeup 🥰
2. The cat is religious? Now that’s funny 😄
3. This book sounds weird yet intriguing 🧐
Why was Ted on the newspaper as 'the suspect' when there wasn't any proof at the time? And what was the bloody flip flop doing in Ted's house? I really don't understand that part. Am I missing something?
What happened to LuLu?
I had the same issue at the beginning - probably wouldn't have finished the book if I wasn't deadly determined to see what all the reviews and fuss on Twitter were about. I couldn't cope with the cat POV, and was endlessly mocking it to all my friends. When the first shift happened and I imagined the cat as a creation of a mind of an abused girl, it all fell into place and I felt bad for hating it. I also realised that I didn't trust the author at all at the start. Then it shifted again and I was not convinced AGAIN and finally, once I got to the end, I could fully appreciate the whole construction. I'm very impressed! Thank a lot for your review. You noticed some things I missed and it was nice to listen about your experience of all the twists and turns.
I just finished this book today. Mind blown! I immediately had to look for reviews to see what other people thought. I am so glad I went into this book not even reading the inside book jacket, I feel like it made it even better for me.
I loved this review and perspective. I’m about to reread this book and wanted a refresher. Thanks for providing that
I also suffer from mental illness, I have horrible depression and anxiety, and I also found this book relatebale in a way. BTW, you are a beautiful Woman jusy the way you are.
Very interesting viewpoint. I just finished the Audible version and I got lost at the end - this helped!
Enjoyed your thoughts. I just finished this one and my mind is reeling. The book was a puzzle and quite disordered, and felt confused for nearly the entirety, but I think the author accomplished all of this for effect and the purpose of the book. Your review helped to clarify some things. Thanks!
I'm VERY late to the party, but I finally just read this book, and went searching for reviews online. I really liked it overall, but agree with many of your criticisms. I loved your perspective on this, and I thank you for the emotional labor put forth in sharing your own struggles with mental health.
Potential Spoiler comment.... Came back to listen to your review after finishing the book today. I have to admit I was impressed with the authors' ability to make me feel one way about the character in the beginning of the story but come away feeling another at the end. I felt so guilty assigning negative attributes to Ted in the beginning when all the time he was a victim of his mother's abuse. I know it sounds strange, but I felt so bad hating Ted throughout the story until the very end. Not only that, I felt manipulated by the author but at the same time it revealed to me how we judge people without never really know the backstory.
I agree with you about the author and the way she tricked you on how to feel about Ted, as the story progressed you experience so much with the chracters. I also just finished the book this morning.
Same! At the end I was like “poor Ted hope he gets the help he needs”
I have the same thoughts as you. I almost didn’t finish the book so much going on but I stuck it thru and I didnt regret it
As I am watching your video, I would like to say that you are so beautiful, your skin is just amazing, and your eyes are magical 😊
I really liked this video. I just finished this book this morning. It was disturbing and a bit triggering since this story could have happened. It wasn't safe like thriller/horror novels, that can't happen in real life. Great video and I'm a new subscriber. Thanks. I also create content as well on UA-cam. I have to check out your other videos.
Just finished this book today. I loved it. I got chills and bawled at the end.

This was a really hard book to read. Not only was it difficult emotionally, it was also hard to follow at times. I too thought DID had been revealed as fake. It really helped me understand it better. It also helped me understand why I've blocked out details of abuse I went through and lied to myself about the past to cope. I really saw this in Dee spending years looking for a sister that she knows is gone. I know the book mentions Ted's mom abusing boys that then disappeared. I would have liked to know more about what she did to him. Also, I wish I knew more about what ended up happening to the therapist. P.S. I understand thinking you look different than you do. Big hugs. I think you are beautiful and perfectly acceptable as you are. 💕
I appreciate your comments. This really was a hard book to read. Thank you for being open about your troubles.🙏🏿 Thank you for your compliment too! 😊
@@KatrinaReads7 Thanks for being open with your struggles as well. I appreciate you. 😘
his mom like to be play “nurse” so I’m guessing that she liked to hurt these boys and then “heal them”
Your summary of the book was great.
I have this book on hold at my library, so I will come back to view this video after I read the book. Love the yellow on you.
Thank you! 😊 I can't wait to chat with you about it!
Thank you for this great review!
I enjoyed the book but will defiantly have to reread it because there were some bits that confused me.
I suspected early on that there was something up with the cat. Olivia said something in the first quarter of the book that struck me as odd I just don't remember what it was. Lol
From how Ted's mom was described very early on I suspected her of child abuse but in the end Ted turning out to not be the villain at all was an interesting twist to me. The book really does challenge stereotypes and assumptions which I think is great
Great video! Thank you 🙌😘
Loved your video and yes the entire time even up until the end the bizarreness of the writing threw me off and I didn’t understand until I watched a few reviews lol I need to reread bc now I feel like the second time KNOWING what’s coming will make it more enjoyable.
I wish that dee got closer. Also it was weird she was the only one who was talking in second person
excellent vid. you look great!
Great review. I read the book a few days ago (2 stars) and you solidified the same thoughts I had but I got more from listening to your take than I got from the story! I have more questions also but I can't even answer the ones you mentioned - I'm just adding them to my pile, lol!! My biggest question is why the boy that Dee was messing with, why didn't he tell anyone as he saw LuLu bashed in?? Why didn't the ranger look for the tagger aka Dee as he knew Ted didn't spray the trees. NOBODY looks for Dee after she "goes missing"? Uggghhh. Thanks for you review with spoiler because your review made total sense to me!. xxT
I assume the teenager Dee went off with didn't say anything for similar reasons that Dee didn't, guilt and shock and not wanting to get in trouble for it. Plus Dee thought he was over 18 and she's a minor so he might get in trouble for that too, since it seemed clear he knew she was a minor (asked if she came with parents), and if someone dies in the act of you commiting another crime that can increase the penalties. But yeah, I thought when the police were searching the woods at the end, they would also search for Dee? Since it's told from Ted's perspective, and he is certain Dee is dead, maybe he didn't think to mention it? Unreliable narrator and all.
I've been wanting to read this since it came out. I probably won't get to it for quite a while. What a fun (slightly chaotic) discussion! 😁 It sounds really interesting. If you're interested in DID you should read _When Rabbit Howls._
It was a fun chaotic read! 🤣
Loved this!
I did come away still wondering was Rob a real person.
Really? What makes you think he wasn't real?
He just seemed too "perfect" for Ted.
I can understand why people have a love hate relationship with this book. Why so many either DNF by the 25% mark or hate the book by the 60% mark. This author took some really serious gambles and risks. I was glad I read it with the audio. I think a reader could get really lost very quickly. Btw kudos to the narrator for doing all the voices. I can imagine it was difficult text to interpret. The one thing I will say is that this should have come with trigger warnings. 4.5 stars from me.
what state are you in? trying to hear if you talk like nevada accent? Las Vegas?
Have you read Fresh Water by Akwaeke Emez? That book really stayed with me and how trauma effects the mind.
I haven't but they are on my radar.
🤔
I never look to fiction for accurate representations of anything. That's not exactly fair in my opinion. A writer of fiction shouldn't be hindered in telling a good story by accuracy in everything.
I didn't say that it was every writer's responsibility to be "accurate" but it is nice to have some proper representation to combat the overall narrative that mentally ill people are dangerous to others especially because we are more likely to be abused than to be the abusers. We get dragged through the mud every time there's a mass shooting but then there is never any real public will to do anything about the state of mental health in the country. Also with the example that I gave it can cause people to receive improper (or no) care and be denied housing or help or employment because someone sees that you're mentally ill and don't see that it's just like any other kind of illness that needs to be managed. I also think that further conversation and research and listening and elevating own voices reviews are important and that's what I said in the video. I never said that it was only writers responsibilities to present accurate representation however I do appreciate Catriona Ward's quest to present the best possible representation of DID to date.
@@KatrinaReads7 I didn't mean to imply you said it, but I just wanted my feelings on that to be out there, i guess, as a writer.
