Thanks Bobbie, very useful tutorial! I bought a wig block last Spring for $8.00 from a beauty supply store that was quitting the business after 42 years and I plan to take good care of it. Beautiful background idea!
Also than you Bobbiepinz...I can't wait to meet you at Dragcon...I was there this past year but since it was my first time I was just happy to be there...I will stop by your booth...it will be coming again soon...thank you so much...I got my canvas head 23 inches and it is a perfect fit for my wigs...I used a foam head the first time and it was too small
I molded my head with saran wrap and Scott tape into a wig head while waiting for my block to arrive. Scott tape is amazing. pins go through but the needle glances off and back into the work! thanks to mentioning that brand.
okay you are now my new favourite channel! i've been following your Instagram for a while now thinking "how do you get your wigs to look so amazing" i gotta get cracking using these tutorials!!!
Bobby Z! You’re a welcome site for anyone who needs to know the ins and outs of all things WIGZ! I’m forever watching your videos and have been trying to put somethings into my routine! Thanks and keep up the great work! A BZ FAN🤗
Here is a tip that would work to remove old wrapping. Try using a seam ripper used for sewing. Just use the ball covered end against the canvas so it will not catch and make a hole in it. Another thought as well is for the tall wig heads is to use a produce bag from the store that they use during the summer for corn. It is extra long so you would only need 1 bag to cover the whole head. It is a thicker bag but it does melt nicely. I haven't tried any of these ideas but they did pop into my head while watching the video.
Most of the actual tutorial doesn't have sound (therefore missing instructions) .... it would be great if you edited this video & added the instructions back in. Please.
Hint for finding the bags: I buy a dispenser box of 1,000 bread bags from GFS restaurant supply stores. I get the 10x14 but I think they had a bigger size also. I use these bags every day for bread, but also for throwing away drippy food and picking up after dogs. Last checked was $23.99 in Houston.
Hi Bobbie! Saw your older video on this before but had to cover a few new blocks so I thought I'd watch your new one. For the long necks I use 2 gallon bags on Amazon (brand = Propack, don't think I'm allowed to put links in comments) and although there's a little more excess to be taped down, it covers the entire block like the 1 gallons cover the regular length blocks. Thought I'd comment in case it was of any interest. Thanks for making tutorials!!!
Great tutorial!!!! I actually used the Walmart/Great Value brand bags to cover my mannequin head. I had to stretch it a bit to fit, but the bag did stretch fairly easily without tearing.

Hiya Bobbie, thanks for sharing! Can't quite figure out why there's one single "dislike" on this... umm... Anyway, love your videos, keep'em coming! xxx
Hello! My name is Ismael, and I am a beginner wigmaker from Brazil. I have a question regarding the protection of cork filled wig block from humidity. Besides wrapping it up with plastic, is there anything else you could do to further waterproof it, like waxing the fabric, for example. Thank you very much!
Thank you Bobbie! :) I used cling film instead of the freezer bag. It's not as pretty because the cling film and the sellotape didn't merge (melt together) but I guess the important thing is that the sellotape doesn't touch the canvas, right?
Does this covering cause the circumference of the block to increase any?? Like yours is a 21.5 does adding the plastic cause the block to be slightly larger than 21.5??
Great question, since it's thin plastic and tape that's melted down it's adding teeny tiny fractions of an inch to the circumference, but not enough to make the block size larger.
Maybe? Like the zipper top bags that some wig come in? I would think it might be a little too thick to melt down properly, I recently tried with a thin shopping bag and it worked!
Hey, I had to get part of my head shaved for surgery so bought a few wigs online. The one that perfectly matched my real hair style was too thick & not enough lace. The one I LOVE that looks real on me is just a little too white. How can I LIGHTLY tint it? I want it to stay platinum but feel tinting it just a little will make it look more natural.
Hey Bobby! Just discovered your channel - nice work - *gives thumbs up*. Quick question - I've used glad wrap and tape in the past but always open to a more efficient method so will give this a whirl. if you needed to pad the block at all would you put the padding in as a base layer post-bag/pre-tape? Cheers, :)
This method is definitely thinner than the glad wrap, so it's easier to pin into. I've never freehand padded out a block, I've only ever used a hairline tracing to do it. I'll cover the block first and add the tracing and then pad it out.
Hi there, I just used this method to protect my wig block but it has got mould and water damage all over it from setting wigs. I think it’s from the pinning of the wigs and the water has gone through those holes. How to I fix it and what do you suggest to protect it in the future
Hmmm... I've never experienced any mold on a covered block, but I do always put mine in a dryer cabinet to dry the wigs which might be why. I would suggest doing this covering for all blocks to protect them and adding an additional bag (not tapped down) anytime you're putting a soaking wet wig on a block or washing on the block. This extra bag will help keep water from getting into the existing holes in the covering. I'd also suggest when double covering a block, that every pin you put in place needs to stay there until the wig is completed and ready to unblock. If you put a pin in and take it out, you get a hole in the second bag which will allow more water to get under the covering. If that makes any sense?
@@WigginOutBZ yes that makes total sense thankyou! Also do you suggest investing in a steamer to set synthetic wigs? I think my main problem with it was that I pour the water on as I don’t own a steamer which may have caused a lot of water getting into the block. But yes I will do the re wrapping every time I block a wig☺️ Thankyou x
@@saphron7234 Totally invest in a steamer if you're able! When pouring boiling water over a wig, it's best to angle the head as you pour so the water is concentrated on the rollers and not being poured directly onto the block.
I've covered blocks with colored masking tape for building purposes but water tends to make the tape warp and droop; so i covered the colored masking tape with clear plastic tape and it was great! I've also used colored shopping bags instead of the clear vegetable bag, and it worked great!
Sorry about that! Bound to happen with this video being as old as it is. I tried to find the stand I'm using in this video and I can't seem to find it anywhere anymore, unfortunately. I'm sorry!
you have so much personality I love it!!! thanks for the video!! quick question if you don't mind me asking, did you go to cosmetology or beauty school to learn about wig making and such or did you learn all yourself??
Great question! Short story is I'm pretty much self-taught, started in high school playing on dolls and mannequin heads; but I did go to cosmetology school after i graduated from undergrad. I cover this more in depth in my video "becoming a broadway hairdresser" that I made a LONG time ago.
@@WigginOutBZ I hope you know I reference this video every time i wrap blocks, and am watching it again now =). I tried all the products you use and they are all amazing and work perfectly
You were referring to depth of field and focal length. Check out Shameless Maya here on UA-cam. She has some really good tutorials that demystify the shooting process.
I've never done it, so it's maybe worth a try? Just be careful not to wrap too many layers around before you seal it down with tape, it would probably end up being too bulky and hard to pin into it. I also don't know if the saran wrap will shrink down with heat like the plastic bag does.
Bobbie, please help me... I'm trying to make wigs... but canvas wig head I order from eBay. I think it is not the true size, I ask for... Where can I order a 22" canvas wig head... That's not going to kill my pocket... Please help me
I tried to comment when you posted this, and it wouldn't let me. eBay or AliExpress are the cheapest options out there, but sometimes (like what happened with this one) you don't receive the correct item! I would measure the wig block you received and reach out to the seller to see if they can exchange it (if you haven't used it) for the correct size! As an older vendor I know sometimes the wrong item can get sent out in an order, so it may have just been a mistake!
+WigginOutBZ You know what's funny ? I had a hard time liking it initially bc I wanted the standard one now I love it because I haven't seen another floral one yet. But check out the seller. They have them in pink floral blue floral and more.
There really isn't a way to remove the stains since the inside is cork, it would absorb any water or cleaning products and may mildew. BUT you do have some options to hide it! You can drape tissue paper over the block before you cover it, or use a colored plastic shopping bag instead of the vegetable bag (I did this once with a purple bag and it turned out great!) OR you can cut the legs off a pair of tights and stretch that over the head too.
Hi do you have a video on how to customize your wig head? I ordered a 21' inch canvas head, my head measured 21.5, and I have a lot of hair that I braid up under my wigs so the 21 inch is too small, I don't want to order 22 inches and it's too big...
I don't have a video showing how, I'm sorry. Is your measurement 21.5 with your hair down or with your hair already braided up? If that is your down measurement, you should braid your hair up first and then remeasure for the correct size since your hair will always be braided up under the wig and now down. The "custom wig company" channel here on youtube has a video showing how to do a hairline tracing, which makes an exact copy of your head. Which you then put onto a canvas block and stuff with fiberfill.
Oh no worries, I just thought I would ask. I saw your comment on another channel, I love your content. The 21.5 measurement is with my hair already braided up actually, that's the measurement around my head but doesn't account for the back of my head, which I know is bigger than the canvas head because I have a lot of hair braided up. I will check on that channel, thank you for such a quick reply!
Gotcha! I understand better now. Is there a way to distribute the braids along your head so they aren't concentrated in one spot along the back? That would probably help the wigs fit a bit better too. And when you take your circumference measurement, take one along where a headband would sit (probably what your 21.5 measurement is) and take another along where a hat would sit to see if that measurement is vastly different. If it is significantly larger you may have to either do the hairline tracing and pad it out on your 21 inch block, or buy a larger block entirely!
The reason why you must cover your canvas...is so you don't see your wig on my mistake😩...I did...it's easy to do...I sewed most of it to the cap but I did have a couple stitches attached to my canvas fabric and I easily cut it off😝
Hah! I've had that happen too, and it still happens with the plastic covering too! It just takes practice to not make your stitches too deep, you're just sewing the hair onto a thin piece of fabric and not into braided natural hair!
Thanks Bobbie, very useful tutorial! I bought a wig block last Spring for $8.00 from a beauty supply store that was quitting the business after 42 years and I plan to take good care of it. Beautiful background idea!
