So some of you have asked why I used Rock Slide at all, since, on the surface, it seems like: Rock Slide (75 Base Power) x 2 (Super Effective) = 150, and Earthquake (100 Base Power) x 1.5 (Same Type Bonus) = 150, right? Well, not exactly. See I didn't mention it because it's soooo minor, but due to the way rounding and damage calculations work, Super Effective Rock Slide does _slightly_ more damage. (Like less than 1% of HP more). Still when you need multiple hits, those potential increases can add up. Having said that, it's much riskier since I'm risking a 10% miss chance, for something like 0.5% more damage, (and truth be told, I initially thought it made a bigger difference). In later generations this would be mitigated by the fact Rock Slide has a 30% chance to flinch, but in Gen 1, it doesn't. If anything this is an example of the type of stuff, while interesting to some, is just kind of long-winded and thus gets edited out of the videos (or not included from the beginning). Still saw a bunch of questions, so thought I'd provide the answer.
I love how at the beginning you say “a normal red and blue run” but it’s obviously implied that means “only one un-evolved Pokémon and no items in battle”
Yes, and also unlimited elixirs and by the way using a game shark to get a level 5 ______ pokemon. But it's fun. I think limiting to a base pokemon is kinda silly though. I'd love to see this one again with Dugtrio. It would still be a struggle in some of the same spots, but not quite as bad. Same with Raichu in that other vid.

5 AM, thinking about life, and I can't find an answer to a problem that's been bothering me. I don't think Diglett will fix my predicament but at least it can't make it any worse. 🤷♀️ Good to see you back, J!
@@georgbiegl3229 Correct. I'm not saying you should not have Rock Slide. But against Lorelei, there is no reason to use Rock Slide vs Earthquake (unless you want to preserve PP). Rock Slide doesn't even have a chance to flinch in gen 1.
@@thomas_ct huh, didn't think about that. Guess it becomes second nature to any Pokémon player to always go for Super Effective moves. But I do believe he was saving Earthquake's PP since he needed it for every single of Bruno's (all resist Rock) and Agatha's (barring Golbat, they're all weak to Ground) Pokémon.
Before I finish the video, I funnily enough, feel like Charmander would have ended up as the most difficult later on. The logic being is you'll have advantage against the Fire type no matter what, however, Exeggutor being resistant to Ground, on top of both Gyarados and Charizard being immune to it would have made it a bit more luck-based because Rock Slide accuracy, and harder as a result, even if earlier on obviously Charmander and Charmeleon were easier than Bulbasaur/Ivysaur. I could be wrong of course, since Razor Leaf being basically always a crit is annoying in it's own right, but it's just kind of funny to me that in this case, I do feel like in some ways, there's actually an argument for Charmander being harder here, at least later in the game.
It would depend on how much would Fire Blast do in the final battle. Another fact to support your opinion, if the rival had Charmander, then Gyarados will be 2 levels higher in the last 2 rival battles compared to if he had Bulbasaur.
The thing about that is that not giving the rival Bulbasaur means that his Grass-type will be Exeggcute/Exeggutor, and only in the pre-Elite 4 fight will that Pokemon even have a damaging Grass move (namely Solarbeam). If the Champion's Exeggutor were hard-coded to have a good moveset instead of the automatically-generated Hypnosis/Barrage/Stomp, then it would be a lot more of a threat. As it is, Exeggutor would be tanky, but that's basically it.
If the Champion's Exeggutor had actual moves, maybe it could be. But it doesn't and so it poses so much less threat than the Venusaur who can just one-shot Diglett with Razor Leaf, finish off a weakened Diglett with Mega Drain, or put it to sleep with Sleep Powder (that additionally has more accuracy than Exeggutor's Hypnosis). His Zard also still has Rage in the final battle, so even if Rock Slide misses you still have a 25% chance he just throws the battle (as well as there always being the 15% and 30% chance that Fire Blast and Fire Spin miss respectively, so the extra chance of losing against the Zard over Arcanine is nearly negligible).
@@AstridCeleste96 Stomp and Barrage are shit moves, they're not going to remotely compare to actual Grass moves from Venusaur. His Exeggutor's only threat is possibly being able to put you to sleep, but besides Hypnosis' awful accuracy, his Venusaur can do the same with better accuracy, if it doesn't just outright kill Diglett first with a Razor Leaf or Mega Drain.
That win reminds me of finally beating Blue myself. I had it as a kid, played it a lot, but I'd never beaten it because I constantly had to restart thanks to my siblings overwriting my saves (my parents would force me to share despite telling them about this issue). My final team was a Blastoise lvl51, Jolteon lvl46, Butterfree lvl48, and Persian lvl44 (there was an Articuno and Ponyta there too but they were mostly filler/potential future members that didn't pan out due for reasons ahead). When I got to the plataeu, I remembered how much it sucked to grind against wild Pokemon, so I spent as much of my money as I could on potions and such to preserve it, then went to grind against the Elite Four instead. I won on my first attempt, mostly using Butterfree and some Blastoise for everyone besides Lorelei (Jolteon MVP there obvs). I could hardly believe it, it was hilarious to have beaten them with such an underleveled team, with a BUTTERFREE. Like, don't get me wrong, I adore Butterfree, that's why it was on my team, but I absolutely did not expect how much it CARRIED me through Kanto and the E4. Her name is Radha and she's perfect.

Glad to see you back. I guess we as the viewes are a bit spoiled because videos came so quickly in the beginning. It will be good that you take your time to not get stressed and keep the quality up! Very excited for what's coming.
I'm still waiting for the Platinum Weedle run or something where halfway Jrose gets so annoyed he just does a quick speedrun of Dark Souls in the middle of the vid just to relax for a bit.
Hey Jrose! Just wanted to point out that like Rock Slide and Earthquake are the same. Rock Slide against Dewgong for instance is 75x2=150 and Earthquake is 100x1.5=150, the only difference is that Earthquake cannot (theoretically) miss... oh and flying types of course. Awesome vid! Great to have you back!
So glad you're back! Dugtrio is actually a good team member to have in this game. It doesn't learn many moves, but makes good use of what it does get. It is one of those Pokemon that is good against specific Pokemon, though, since it's so frail.
lmmfao. i find it so funny that you brought up the fact that diglett doesn't have hands so he can't use mega punch. But how the fuck is he using scratch?!?!?! lol
To be fair, HP (while of course important) isn't as comparable to the other stats because of how it's calculated. Every stat besides HP is calculated as "base stat x 2 + 5" for level 100 Mons (The five is so the Mon wouldn't have 0 or close to 0 stats at level 1), but the calculation for HP is "base stat x 2 + 110". So to use Magikarp as an example (because coincidentally along with having twice Diglett's base HP also has about twice its defense stat), Diglett's unmodified HP stat (no stat exp/EVs) at level 100 is 130, while Magikarp's is 150, so not a huge difference. However their defense stats unmodified at level 100 (neutral nature in gens 3+ of course) are 55 for Diglett (base 25), and 115 for Magikarp (base 55).
"Hey everyone how's it going?" Oh gosh the past few days have been really awful. When you first started this series you said it would be something to do to pass time in quarantine, I remember thinking there was no way quarantine was going to last as long as it would take to do all these challenges. ha

So happy to see you back! I read on Twitter you kinda had a rough time in the past weeks, don't push yourself too hard, we really appreciate your videos and we want you in the best shape for these challenges!

5 AM, thinking about life, and I can't find an answer to a problem that's been bothering me.
I don't think Diglett will fix my predicament but at least it can't make it any worse. 🤷♀️ Good to see you back, J!
I wish you all the best my dude. Stay strong!
At 35:00 I was expecting you to say, "But actually Agatha was super easy, barely an inconvenience."
Ah, I see you are also a being of culture.

but you can hit flying types
@@thomas_ct Wait Rock Slide can't flinch in Gen 1? Wow I learned something new.
@@Aarantula Rock Slide has a chance to flinch? Holy crap I never knew that.
Ah yes, the glassiest of cannons.
That would be deoxys :p

@@OmegaTyrant Even Normal moves from the Exeggutor could threaten a frail Pokemon like Diglet if not 1/2HKOed.
45 minute video when my insomnia is in full effect. Thanks now I have a way to pass the time
That win reminds me of finally beating Blue myself.
I MISSED YOU!!! Saw your Twitter post and honestly props for realizing you needed to take some time off. Hopefully it served well; we are here for you if you ever need support!

These drinking "games" are not fun and they are all essentially the same.
I have always been eating while watching your videos, so the moment I saw your video after your break I immediately felt the urge to stuff myself. Thanks for taking care of me with these great videos !
can we appreciate hes had the same intro for 5 years

when this series is finished will you do the same thing in gen 2? i´d love to see this!
PS: I really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos. they always make my day a little better. thx for the great content!
I will keep going but I'm having issues with Gen 2 tbh. I've tried to make 4 different videos and they always kinda don't work. Gen 2 is amazing, but not well structured for challenges. The Elite Four being mid-game really holds them back in that regard.
@@Jrose11 what about another gen? maybe 3 or 4?
@@LucyRoseLuna FireRed/LeafGreen or Emerald are strong possibilities.
Jrose11 firered/leafgreen are to much like the gen 1 games in my opinions
@@qymaenjaisheelal5142 Gen 3 games are quite different to Gen 1 in terms of game mechanics. If some of the pokemon fail to beat the game in Gen 1, they may stand a chance in Gen 3. We've seen that done with Magicarp.

You know... finding a new one of these videos posted after I get off of work... It's like Christmas came early, especially after a really bad day at work.
Thank you for making and posting these Jrose, they really brighten up my afternoon.
I was playing fire Red recently and got stuck at surge because I had a charmander, oddish, and pidgy and was underleveled. Went into rock cave and found a lvl 31 dugtrio and destroyed surge.
Pretty much every play through:
Seriously though, why did they put digger cave right there?
My girlfriend told me she just watched this run and that I should check it out. Gotta say, I love these videos. :)
Keep up the great content.
Finally! I was so under-Jrosed... Mh, that came out somewhat wrong...
Thanks for bringing this series back I was concerned you grew tired of it which is entirely understandable however thank you
The champ is back. Perfect timing as I am about to start cooking 😃
Yes! Jrose is my default background "music" during cooking as well during the long drive to work&back. I dont even have to watch it, just hearing his voice is so strangely therapeutic
Glad to see you back. I guess we as the viewes are a bit spoiled because videos came so quickly in the beginning. It will be good that you take your time to not get stressed and keep the quality up! Very excited for what's coming.

Glad you’re back and didn’t get tired of the games from all the runs.
I can't wait till "Can you beat ultra moon with Just a Cosmog" A slightly worse magicarp
So glad you're back!
Dugtrio is actually a good team member to have in this game. It doesn't learn many moves, but makes good use of what it does get. It is one of those Pokemon that is good against specific Pokemon, though, since it's so frail.
What's with Pokemon combining together to make new Pokemon Starmie, dugtrio, magneton, dudrio, exeggutor, weezing, metagross line are Pokemon legos?
So glad to have you back! Wasn’t that long, but felt far too long without my Jrose fix!
I was just thinking "Man, Jrose hasn't uploaded in a while, let me go see if I missed something" and I see this video posted one hour ago.
I thought the same thing but was an hour early. I woke up today and saw it was posted like 15 minutes after I fell asleep
Yes yes yes this week was awful but you just made it okay. I cannot even express how glad I am to see this. Thank you!

glad you took your break jrose! We like watching you have fun, not drain your soul with tedious recording :)
lmmfao. i find it so funny that you brought up the fact that diglett doesn't have hands so he can't use mega punch. But how the fuck is he using scratch?!?!?! lol
Whoever is disliking these videos on sight, come outside. I just wanna talk.
lmao best comment
*strides towards you* Alright, what's up virgin?
26:07 me irl whenever the BBG gets mentioned.

@@eyecontrol4900 Well, the genre hasn't died out since 2019 or so, but Pikasprey and JRose were making Pokemon challenge videos a year or two before it became something many channels would be centered around.
I can’t wait to see how Caterpie does in a run like this..just kidding, you can’t beat the game with just a Caterpie, it only gets Tackle and String Shot xD

Pokemon Trainer Amanda good luck getting past Lavender Tower with just a Caterpie..you won’t be able to damage the ghost types, even with Struggle. It has the same issues as Magikarp
@Pokemon Trainer Amanda Right, but that's because Struggle is typeless after Gen I.
Weedle is also practically impossible in RBY--not COMPLETELY impossible because crits, but if you can get the number of crits required to deal meaningful damage to the Channelers (let alone Agatha), buy yourself all of the lottery tickets.
