That video game might be the best NES game ever. I never heard of Zen until it came in a ROM pack. It's legit awesome. The game brought me here looking for information. It's also the hardest NES game ever. Definitely try the game even if you don't like or know who Zen is.
It's hard right? As a kid at the time, did we feel suckered? I didn't. Because I saw a cool character. And there were tons of cool characters, and as a kid that's what's important. However is it like the Venom > Spawn debacle? Not quite, he didn't get his idea stolen and then tried to spin off it. It still sucks though, because Zen is cool. Spawn is cool. Venom is cool. They could all coexist. Zen will always have a place in my heart. And there's always room for more anthropomorphic crime fighters in a kid's heart! You don't have to have the first idea, you just have to produce an idea that works really well and stick with it. I can't remember all the names of all the toys right now, but Z-Bots and all of the other micro toys, they were all great. Transformers and Go Bots were great. Ninja Turtles and Battletoads were both great. There's always room for a third, I think.
Amen to that. I'm still enjoying the character after all these years. It makes no sense to think about the negative things about a comic book character that people still enjoy. To be honest, I'm actually tired of negativity in what others enjoy. Like they tell us not to enjoy something because they don't like it themselves. I believe we enjoy whatever we want without the criticism from others
Not sure why the hate, but I loved Zen when I was a kid. He was a cool character and the weirdo team of his stood out to me enough to want all things Zen. This video seemingly pretends not to take a side, but to listen to it you would think that we were all fooled and robbed, it was a pathetic rip-off and not actually somebody trying to make their fortune too, and that we should all be pissed as hell. Who actually liked Zen? I did. And apparently a good portion of the comments did too.
Also? How old are you?? You look like you were born when Zen came out and missed the early 90s. Not sure what you think you experienced about any of this...
I made a feature length video about Zen, I interviewed Zen and his creators Steve Stern and Dan Cote as well as other key contributors such as Bill Maus and spoke as a fan at the time. I loved Zen and still love Zen. Zen deserves way better than this, I tried to give it to him and the artists who create him. ua-cam.com/video/tyc-lXSIj_I/v-deo.html
He would. I thought he was in the same universe as a kid when I saw the Archie comics. I made a video interviewing the creators. ua-cam.com/video/tyc-lXSIj_I/v-deo.html
I enjoy Zen, i just dont understand the hate for the character. In the 90s i grew up with underrated characters like PITT, Bloodshot, Judge Dredd, etc, I still read them to this day because I like them Its like with any 90s kid, we saw, we read, we loved. Zen had a really cool feel in comics because it was different from Marvel and DC

I've seen several people on here stating that the NES game was hard but I definitely remember it being not that difficult. Maybe it's hard by modern standards?
The character designs were great especially the Villains and Zen had a cool solo hero vibe even tho he did have a team I would like to see a modern revival honestly with a small degree of parody
I had a Zen toy as a kid. It was a cheap piece of junk. I just recently learned about the game. It’s good and insanely hard because they pixel swapped Zen with unfinished levels of ninja gaiden, legend of kage, rastan, battletoads, and strider. I thought it started out as a cartoon, but it never existed.
I agree! I interviewed the creators, including the artist, Dan Cote and I think one of the keys to his appeal is and was the design. ua-cam.com/video/tyc-lXSIj_I/v-deo.html
Zen NES game was pretty good. By the era standarts - cool music, nice graphics, huge variety in gameplay. Even cutscenes!
It was underrated but difficulty was high.
I have the answer for the first question - yes , it was amazing. It was difficult, it was fun, it had crazy good music

I was a kid in the 90's and I only knew the NES game.

Well said. I feel the same way. Not sure why this video makes it sound like Zen was bad, we were robbed, and we should all be pissed.
