100 years ago or so I struggled with a case backhoe engine that had a liner protrusion problem. Case had different fire ring sizes so I used a depth mike to figure out what was needed and ordered the parts. It was somewhat hit or miss at first until I dug deep into the books. Good news I fixed the engine and got a lot of experience r+r of the head.

Hey Josh, I’m pretty good at troubleshooting those def problems. I’m at a cat dealer here in American Samoa. I think there is an updated version of the def pump now. The pump can also fail and push def in the harness all the way to the ecm. I love you videos!

@@nspro931our headquarters are in California, need I say more lol. Yeah most people do def/dpf deletes here, max speed is only 25mph so not really in danger of getting smoked with a tune.
For me, def makes me a ton of money. Primarily because no one is good at diagnosing it and every day the machine is down is about a 1k loss for the company. I had an interesting one last month. No crank, no start, no comm. ended up being the def pump. I stumbled on the answer just from feeling all the relays. The def pump was hot. Swap the relay, same thing. Pull the relay completely, it starts right up.
The worse part about def is you can replace the entire system, and it can still fail within a year and the customer will be pissed.
But yeah if anyone ever gets stuck with a def/dpf fault on any car backhoe, hit me up.

I remember after the rebuild on my former DDEC-4, lot's of blow-by, white smoke, and the failed bottle test, it was because the tech who reassembled the engine (not the same one who took it apart) was a low-hour fresh out of school with no supervision had installed the head gasket upside down which you can do on that engine. It was the original tech who tore it down the second time and it was he who made the discovery and the reason it became a warranty job which the shop paid 100%. On the engine you are now working on, I suspect an issue with liner protrusion or worse, a warped head since it was a short-block swap. Chances are they did not check the head for straightness before placing it on this engine. Only two things I can think of that can warp a head is overheating, or improper torquing of head bolts or torquing out of sequence. That's my two cents and I swear by it.

Wish I had a picture for destruction of the week.
My brother recently took delivery of a New Cat 335 zero swing excavator. $400K machine.
A young kid that was not supposed to run it, got in to move a bedding box. ( a steel box gravel is placed in to be placed around a pipe in a trench ) . He had the box close to the cab, and then tracked over a 2 ft high dirt mound.
The bedding box came off the bucket teeth, into the cab. Broke all the glass out, and bent the front “A “ pillars of the cab. That is also the ROPS. ( roll over protection structure)
34 hours on the excavator !
It’s at Cat in Grand Junction Colorado now getting a new cab.
The only good news, several machines use the same cab. So availability isn’t going to as big of an issue, as first thought.

Got lucky on that one in that it did it in the shop rather than risking a bent rod or other damage trying to start it elsewhere. Had that happen on my car with a direct injected gas engine that had a stuck injector. The pressure in the gas tank while it sat literally pushed all of the fuel into the motor, and all the oil in the crankcase went into the exhaust, and needless to say, it wasn't keen on turning over when I wanted to pull it into the garage to fix it. Just a click and the lights going dim.

Once I figure out the cylinder, I mark and check head bolt torque. This could be a warranty situation. That is why I like a reman long block, as if a head gasket joint failure occurs. It pushes a lot of blame on Cat as they installed the head. Of course it has to be a legal engine. Per Cat guide lines, all liners come out. All head bolts and spacer plate replaced. Flycut cracks I hate. PSI test the head and it is good, warranty won't pay unless it has failed into the coolant passage. What is your back log on cylinder heads? Longest one in our store, was ordered in August of last year. Waiting on one I ordered, (Dec of 2022) EST is March 13.

On engines with cylinder liners like this one it’s critical they’re the right height after install. The liner actually sticks up a little and that’s what helps it seal. Even if the head bolts are torqued perfectly it won’t clamp the gasket like it should if they liners aren’t high enough.

I end up with little boxes and tubs and stuff everywhere and the work bench area is covered with harnesses, tubes and all sorts of stuff. I have obtained a grocery store stock cart for free that I intend to cut and modify into a 24 inch wide x 36 inch long by 60 inch tall multi shelf roll around. Heavy stuff like manifolds, turbos, heads would be on the lower shelf and lighter stuff like boxes of bolts at the top. Hope to keep things more organized.

Had a deleted ISX crack a head and was pushing and eating coolant. Was told to drive it back 2000K miles. Not knowing at first, I shut it down. Didn’t want to start the first time and locked up the second time a couple hours later. So I rotated the engine over by hand to squeeze the coolant out of the cylinders. Several rotations. Worked to get it started. It ran the next 2 days and 2K miles. It shut down while I was in the shower 30 mins from delivery and wouldn’t restart. Towed it and pulled the head to find a very similar crack. I’ve heard that truck has cracked that head 3 more times since then, 100K miles each time. Don’t delete your EGR! Anyway, just a tip if you find yourself in this predicament on the road.

They ate it and it has been good so far we have put about 400 hours on it. What would have caused? Would it have been liners? The tractor was worked hard for the first 10,000 hours. They had it chipped but we are not working it hard now. That engine is set at 450hp but we only need about 350 hp for our work. It was priced right and just had the transmission rebuilt.

My opinion. Whether it's automotive, AG, construction. Yellow, red, black or blue. Factory short blocks or remans are always a huge red flag No-No in my book. They're outsourcing assembled to the cheapest labor possible.

    Front cover leaks
Front cover has never been off of this engine since new - 1998
All the gears were too tight
    No lash
How she ran like that all these years I will never know!
Plus since the rebuild , I checked the intakes valve lash, all of the intake valves on five cylinders - Too Tight - No lash
The exhaust had lash, so I might get lucky, no burnt valves thank God.

Does not look like during the "rebuild" for this engine, they managed to put a new head gasket on. Gasket looked like it got a lot of miles on it.

My guess is either the block or head wasn’t machined or maybe they got a head from another unit and installed it without machining it or possibly improper torque. Maybe something I would ask the customer was why was it rebuilt in the first place

Two places I use silicone one is on a Cummins engine front peanut covered to the block just in the bottom two corners because the gasket loses the Rubber seal on the piece of metal down there so I put black rtv about 3in up on each side so when the gasket loses its rubber piece off the steel there's still sealant which acts as a rubber 3in on the bottom where they all leak oil so it solves that problem forever doesn't come back in the second place is I believe it's the Volvo intake gasket I put it in four spots because the O-ring seal does not stay on the intake unless you try to glue it or something so I found that in four spots if you put our TV and you let it dry it holds in place so you can actually Mount the intake to the Head other than that do not use RTV on Rubber seal it doesn't do anything although I did use a thin layer on a C15 between the front seal in the peanut cover cuz the peanut cover with slightly out of round and that fix the oil leak after three seals in it found out it wasn't the seal that was leaking it was from the seal to the peanut cover and since the engine already has a million miles on it we decided we would try to put a little caulk on the outside of the seal to seal it to the peanut cover and hope that fixes it until we do a full rebuild on it's been nine months has a week to drop a oil

Does Cometic make gaskets for Cat and can you use them? I would think that the MLS gaskets would be better since they are multi layer steel gaskets.

Good afternoon, I have a question about the head, story is I had a bunch of work done on my 07 Pete C15 accert anyway all the prior work didn’t fix the issue another shop found a bad head gasket between 4-5, liner protrusion checked out good but then noticed on the head in 3 cylinders it had those hair line crack in it, question being would you replace the head for that?
