It was a real cluster**** when guns started blazing. USS Laffey got within 20 feet of IJN Hiei and launched all her torpedoes at her while also shooting at Hiei's deck. Nearly killing Admiral Hiroake Abe. The crew had pulled out rifles and were shooting as well, but Laffey was surrounded by Japanese ships and was destroyed by a barrage of fire and torpedoes. Still the damage to Hiei made it a sitting duck and American planes from Enterprise and Henderson field on Guadalcanal later forced the Japanese to abandon and scuttle Hiei. Later in the battle USS Washington would bump into IJN Ayanami and sink her as well. So both the Eagle Union and Sakura Empire starter ships sank at Guadalcanal. HMS Javelin and KMS Z23 actually survived the war.
