wow! I came looking for recommendations and left not only with that, but also feeling really seen. I was born and raised in Argentina so spanish is my first language, and I've always felt frustrated when people use the term “latinx“ to refer to us (in a gender neutral way) because it simply makes no sense in our language! today was my first time hearing the term that we use (“latine“) from a video in english and it blew my mind! Yes, maybe it's a bit silly to be so affected by such a small detail, but it really touched me, so thank you! I'm just going to binge all your content now
You are my main source for finding diverse and intriguing short stories and anthology recs, because I know I can trust your tastes blindly! Thanks for continuing to make these videos, I love them! Taaqtumi and Amor Actually are high up on my TBR :)
🐅 Even though we already talked about this, collections we can/should buddy read: - Salt Slow by Julia Armfield - Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adeji-Brenyah - Gods of Want by K-Ming Chang - Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine - The Frangipani Hotel by Violet Kupersmith - The Rock Eaters by Brenda Peynado I would also really like to read, among so many others, A Natural History of Transition by Callum Angus and A Dream of a Woman by Casey Plett.
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance my top two i’ve read based of your recommendation were her body and other parties and how long ‘til black future month. both of which were glowing 5 stars for me! next year i’m hoping to get to terraform and the paper menagerie 😊
I enjoy these videos because as a supposed short story hater, I've been teaching myself to appreciate them more this year. Taaqtumi was definitely the most fun I have had reading a short story collection, bc I never knew what I was gonna get other than joy. It has been the easiest one to read so far. I mean Hexarchate Stories was probably my favorite collection. I read a classic Japanese short story collection with Wats - Rashomon and Other Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa - and that was such an educational and fascinating experience. Hope to finish Paper Menagerie by the end of the year bc I have enjoyed the ones I've read.
Yeah, the bite-sized nature of Terraform was so nice. I'm reading a food themed issue of FIYAH right now, and I'm loving the food focus in particular! 😂
Its a hard read! Not something one just reads on a whim, the way he comes at me in every single story is really rude. I asked him at the signing why he had to go so hard and he just smiled and shrugged 😂
I really liked this video! I liked the Short Story Collection called "A Conservation of Shadows" by Yoon Ha Lee, many of those stories are inspired by Korean history and I think it was super fascinating to read!
For speculative stories, I enjoyed Even Greater Mistakes by Charlie Jane Anders, whose work (in this collection and elsewhere) ranges from quirky to serious to light & charming to total gut-punch. Always unexpected. 🐯
In my brain I always say I'm not a big fan of short stories....but I have such a limited sample size I don't know that I can extrapolate to that generalization.... 🤔Totally forgot I was going to try the Paper Menagerie....whoopsies
this reminds me that i never ended up finishing Salt Slow 😂 But agreed, short stories are the absolute best! I forget if you've read Out There by Kate Folk? If not, IT'S SO GOOD, I think that's my favorite of the year! I'll definitely be getting Taaqtumi and The Paper Menagerie 👀 🐅
I second this comment, you need to read Out There ASAP!!! I borrowed the ebook from the library and 4 stories in I ordered a physical copy cause I loved it so much!!!
Anthologies aren’t really for me, however the Ken Liu books I’m dying to get into, although I know once I start on Ken Liu, I won’t be able to stop. Uhhggg !!!…..the book problems! Thx for sharing!💚💚
Which anthologies have you tried in the past? I will say they don't always work for me as well as collections but lately I have been having way more luck, but that also might be how I am choosing to read them.
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance you know up until last year I hadn’t read any for years, I tried Blackout last year, that was a nope. I’ve being trying read all of Stephen King’s backlist and realized earlier this year I’ve been avoiding his anthologies, so read Night Shift, also a nope, but currently reading Skeleton Crew and loving it. I think the only anthologies I can think of that I liked were horror based, Clive Barker’s Books of Blood are my favorite.

Finally catching up on some Dec. videos! I really liked The Way Spring Arrives too. LOVE Paper Menagerie

Its a VERY popular short story theme that just never lands for me for some reason, I hate it! But I will probably always keep trying
I came here by accident. And your video made me pick up Taaqtumi. I would never have heard about it otherwise.
Thank you.
Love from India.
KEN LIU FANCLUB LET'S GOOOO (though shamefully i'm still working on the paper menagerie despite having started LAST january LOL) 🐅

I have somehow missed this collection and I love Yoon Ha Lee so thanks for putting it on my radar!

I have only read their novel so I really should try out the short stories!
