  • Wood carving project in Lime wood. The carving of our company Logo...a mascaron. The design is my own but it has been influenced from the classical italian renaissance mascaron. Originally its function was to frighten evil spirits away so that they would not enter the building on wich it was attached to. As time went it was subsequently adapted in to become "mearly" a decorative element. This piece will eventually be gilded entirely in gold, watergilding and be placed over the company door - Also viev the second part when my colleague Lotta continues the work, Water gilding of a wooden mascaron.

It depends a little from what kind of Wood Im carving in and of course how much I use a specific chisel. In limewood, walnut or pine its not needed that much, perhaps every other day or so. But if it is oak it could be several times a day, depends on how much I use a chisel and if it is much carving against the grains.

In the Gilding video, I thought this was COMPO!!!!! Only a Swede could do this so perfectly it seems to have come out of a mold! Lime Wood is what Grinling Gibbons used for his miraculous carvings. Now, I see why he used it.
We (& later our Decorators/Architects) have used Compo from a company in Chicago, which casts off old wooden originals they keep in a fireproof vault. Watching you work is like traveling back in time to watch the Swedish sculptors in Chicago, creating the originals!

What method do you use to sharpen your chisels? I carve also and have a difficult time keeping them sharp. Your work is beautiful.
