- Until 6-7 years ago, we had bird feeders strung between two trees about 40' in the air. Intended to feed the birds, they were simply attracting too many bears. We loved seeing them but it is very dangerous for the bears when they view humans as a food source.
The one feeder they had not bothered was located on our deck for hummingbirds, but that bit the dust in the middle of May this year! We have since hung a replacement from the side of the house about 20' in the air. Unless the bears climb the sheer face of the house, everyone should be safe now!

Black bears look cute and cuddly compared to Brown ...still very dangerous though :)
Absolutely! (Most) black bears are easily startled by humans with loud noises, etc but brown bears are certainly a different animal! I encountered a mother brown bear and two cubs that were on the other side of a stream a 1/4 mile away while hiking in Montana and was STILL nervous despite the distance!
