I think it would have been brilliant if in the intro to "The View from Halfway Down" if when when BoJack is in the pool we look up to see that no one is looking back at him.

I think it's telling how Seasons 1-5 had Bojack going through the introduction with a mostly blank expression, but Season 6 has him display a wider range of emotions like guilt, fear, and resentment to reflect the new cognizance he has about the effects of his actions.

I’d also mention that in the title sequence the two people looking down at Bojack when he’s drowning are Mr Peanutbutter, who literally saves him from drowning in his pool in s3 ep10, and Diane, who Bojack wanted to save him from drowning in his pool in s6 ep15. I swear everyone involved in this show are geniuses.

It's also interesting to note that S3E10 is almost exactly the midpoint of the show. What is the actual midpoint of the show ? The Old Sugarman Place, the first episode of season 4 featuring BoJack all by himself after pushing everyone away, like a new beginning.

I always interpreted the final scene in the intro as what BoJack was begging for while he was drowning in Halfway Down. His friends Diane and Mr PB, all the partygoers ("there's going to be plenty of people around when I kill myself") and the helicopter representing the wider society that still remembers him and is interested in him, the press, the police.

The trippy sequence in season 4 also mimics a kaleidoscope, like the one Diane gave Bojack to keep him distracted while she dealt with her family back in season 1. That episode ended with Bojack essentially telling Diane that she could leave her terrible family behind and live her new life. In this season, the family Bojack had catches up with him.

@@manuam98 I think it's almost certainly foreshadowing that reveal. I also interpret it as a reference to how experimental Season 4 got, though. They really seemed to make it their mission to avoid the formula established by Seasons 1 - 3, focusing more on the supporting characters and mixing up the format by externalising character's mental states (Stupid Piece of Shit, Ruthie, Time's Arrow). Sending BoJack on that trip, rather than having him drift through the Season's settings, reflects that quite well.

Something I liked about the sequence was how Bojack is always moving to the side then backwards. To me it represents that he never grows as a person- he's always stagnant. Him waking up in the morning is the only progress he ever makes, like that in itself is an accomplishment (which it is when you have/are depressed).
Then at the end he ALWAYS backpedals- he goes into a bender, is an even worse jerk, and is just generally self destructive. Then afterwards he sits on the surface of his depression but doesn't make much of an effort to get out. He's already resigned himself to his cycle of turmoil. Even in S6 when he tries to change, he still ends up back in the pool, fallen back deeper than ever before.

I was going to say something similar, that the abuse Bojack received at such a young age probably turned into a deep feeling that he hurt his parents and they were punishing him as a result, where despite his outward understanding that they were in the wrong he'd have some reasonable self-doubt that would absolutely never bubble to the surface given the severity of the abuse and his own development as a result.

I like the notion that the trippy sequence in season 4 is foreshadowing to the spiked coffee, but I think it might also be a reference to the fact that season 4 shows Bojack at his most introspective. Especially in the earlier episodes when he's trying to repair the relationships with his closest friends.

A small addition taken from the behind the scenes book: They struggled quite a bit with finding fitting music for a show such as Bojack Horseman thats depressing and grounded at times while zany and absurd at other times. The jazzy end product in my opinion is perfect for it, jazz has this magic where it both has a lot of character and can fit a very specific mood and honestly I don't see any other genre or sound fitting the show as well as this title sequence did.

i think the intro's theme is perfectly fitting, the catchy, even fun beat that it starts off with that slowly transitions into this more somber and serious jazz tune at the end, i think it represents not only bojack's, but everyone else's growth along the show really well

The season 6 intro is especially fantastic, reminding us of the regrets BoJack accumulated just throughout the course of the previous seasons, not letting us forget what happened in New Mexico, not letting us forget the painful irony of that drug being nicknamed BoJack and so on. Was kind of surprised they didn't update at least the final bit in the pool with his greying mane once Sharona gave him that makeover though. Obviously you wouldn't want that for the flashback parts of the intro, but having it at the end there could have served as an extra reminder of just how many years BoJack's selfish behaviours have been going on for, especially contrasting the younger version of him at the beginning of the season 6 intro.

21:10 in s1e11 “downer ending”, bojack mentions swimming in a lake when he gets too old and drowns.
In s2, they mention that something was too dark so he swims out with his friend “suzie side”, an alternate for “suicide”
He also almost drowned in the pool in the end.
Further, in his eulogy, bojack says about his mother, father and self “we were all in understanding that we were drowning together”
Drowning has been a big part of the show and its been used to represent times when bojack was mega stressed (season 1 before he met diane and had that panic attack i think he said he was drowning)

Great video! Also of note, in the final season’s sequence, BoJack constantly looks around him with a concerned or guilty expression on his face, reacting to the scenes. In previous seasons, he almost always had a blank expression. This shows that BoJack is much more aware of his mistakes and cares much more about the world around him.

I have another connection to the bit in the intro sequences where Bojack falls into the pool!!
In “Free Churro” (05x06), Bojack is giving his eulogy about Beatrice when at one point, he starts to talks about the lavish parties she threw at their house-where Bojack performed the “Lollipop Song” and Beatrice danced. Then, Bojack illustrates a metaphor about how sometimes, you feel like you are “drowning.” And eventually, swim:
Bojack: “We understood each other, in a way. Me and my mom and my dad, as screwed up as we all were, we did understand each other. My mother, she knew what it’s like to feel your entire life like you’re drowning with the exception of [the dance parties]. These very rare, brief instances, in which you suddenly remember... you can swim...But, then again, mostly not. Mostly you’re drowning. She understood that too...All three of us were drowning and we didn’t know how to save each other, but there was an understanding that we were all drowning together” (17:00, “Free Churro”).
Edit: this could also be a connection to the painting in Bojack’s office, where a horse is swimming in Bojack’s pool another horse watches. It’s like the members of the Bojack family, as Bojack explained in “Free Churro,” are understanding that they are all drowning. And they are not helping each other, just watching, because they don’t know how to help.

edit: google says, "Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. According to Tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, staring at it for the remainder of his life"

Speaking of the season 6 opening, the fact that it doesn't show Bojack in his home is pretty significant as he spends less time there than in previous seasons. First he was in rehab, and when he was released he actively avoided going to his home, as it was a reminder of his old self. He would eventually move to Connecticut to start a teaching job, and by the end, he becomes broke and has to sell his house. The only time the house appears in the theme, besides the first shot, is the ending with Bojack falling in the pool, considering Bojack eventually fell back into old habits, which coalesced in him almost drowning in his (or what used to be his) pool.

I love how in the intro, most of the characters are not looking at Bojack and are going about their lives. Shows that Bojack feels alone and detached from those around him. You do see people looking at him annoyed or angry from time to time (I think at one point Mr Peanutbutter looks at him too and Bojack looks annoyed at him) but for the most part, he feels "other". He misses the good parts of his life because he is so focused on the bad.
Of course that changes when he does something drastic, like almost drown in a pool. Only then do Diane and Mr Peanutbutter look concerned for him. Maybe he feels like he has to keep doing things to himself/his life for attention, even bad attention? Because he feels unseen? I love analyzing it sm!!

When I was watching Bojack with my family last year one of our favorite things about it was how good the continuity was between episodes. Whenever we saw a small detail in one episode that was the result of a decision made in a previous one, we would say “continuity!” and point it out, like a little game. The details in the intro sequence perfectly display the amount of attention to detail this show had, and when something like that happens you can really tell the writers and animators loved the show they were making.

In season's 1-5 Bojack seems a little surprised when he falls into the pool, implying that he doesn't want to be falling into the pool, but in season 6 when he falls off the cliff his face is completely void of emotion and he wears a blank expression. This could possibly show how now that he can reflect on all the bad he's done he figures there is some sort of karma that he has coming and he isn't surprised when it comes. He excepts it. So he shows no surprise or emotion.

i love how they make you think that the part where he’s saved by his friends in the title sequence is also foreshadowing for the VFHD, but then they reveal diane never picked up his call. totally had me convinced that she was gonna come rescue him, and then the sadness punched me in the gut when i realized none of his old friends were coming after he pushed them all away.

This is and will more than likely be always be my favorite series. This show had passion to drive it. The people behind it had an important message to get across and I couldn't be happier that they did.

It always made me so happy when a character would appear in Bojack's house in the title sequence, since he wasn't alone anymore lol

You forgot to mention that Ralph Carney (the saxophonist honored in the S5 E1 credits) actually PLAYED the saxophone parts in the Bojack Horseman Title Sequence!

I think what's really nifty, is in the scene where Hollyhock is overdosing, as she stumbles into the bathroom, she uses her left hand to quickly pull her pants up as they're falling down, due to the weight she's lost unexpectedly, and so rapidly, that she hadn't bought any new clothes. 10:57

I absolutely ADORE shows with good intros especially when they change through the series and when it relates to the season. I would 100% watch Philbert.

There's a lot of references to drowning in the series. Like Bojack drowning in the Narcissos painting when he's tripping, him saving Eddie (the firefly) from the pond and the stories Ana tells from her past.

Also just a fun little thing I guess lol
The punishment for envy (one of the 7 deadly sins) is to drown and there’s a lot of moment where we see BJs envy I kinda think that’s cool

The attention to detail and background aesthetic is what I love most. Those background details don't just change by season, sometimes by episode. A season would have 3 intros sometimes. Then the culmination of all of that qas season 6, it was a recap of all Bojack's life.

I’m probably the only one who didn’t get this but, Sarah-Lyne’s catch phrase “ thats to much man”.. its for shadowing for her over dose!

Bojack fucked me up so bad in highschool. I couldn’t finish the last season, I saw so much of myself in bojack especially at that time of my life. I think im ready to finish it now.
