- Getting your colour type right is one of the hardest things to do. It’s hard because we’re highly subjective people. We see more of what we want to be, than rather what we actually are. And that’s ok. But if you want to know your real colour type and how to use it to your stylistic advantage, then we should start where it all began, back in 1928.
I’ll try to take you to the past, to the source of colour typology, and then I’ll show you a quick example of how getting your colour type right can be a powerful, expressive tool throughout your entire life.

@@mimaesthetic2517 She is already pretty, so perhaps if you compared her wearing that shirt to a shirt that's actually flattering to her, you'd see the difference. That shirt ages her significantly.

Hi Daria, I'm happy you made a video about this, i always have trouble with the seasonal colour type because i don't seem to fit in, and it's still not clear to me where i belong. i have black hair, pale skin but yellow undertoned, brown eyes. the Winter types always say dark hair but cool toned skin and blue/green eyes. i might be autumn but i don't look good in yellow, orange, olive colours. i found that white suits me, also light pink, camel, red and light or dark blue.
Hi Imola. You sound exactly like me. I am a winter. A winter complexion can come in very white skin all the way to black skin. The undertone is what counts. If you have a light olive complexion , it's easy to confuse it with a yellow undertone. It's actually a yellow overtone. The undertone is blue, if you look good in blues pinks and purples. The jewel colours are especially good on a winter complexion. These are a ruby red, saphire blue, deep turquoise, magenta pink, deep purple, etc. Only a winter looks her best in black. Other colour types get a little washed out. On the light side, the ice colours are great. Such as white, ice pink, ice blues, etc. also light greys and silver. Choose a dark chocolate brown over a camel, a blood red over a tomatoe red, a blue green over a yellow green, etc. Avoid mustards and brick tones and all the warmer colours. The only yellow we can pull off is a light shade of lemon yellow. ( My knowledge of colour comes from being a painter and from 30 plus years in the fashion industry. ) Cheers!

Daria, do you think the expansion of the seasonal system to 16 types makes it easier to find the right colors or harder? I ask because I find it difficult to assess for myself.
Yes, it was expanded to make it easier for people to find the right type. The 4 type system works as well, but the thing is that under each type there will be people that don’t necessarily look a like. For example, a woman with blue eyes, red hair and light skin fits under a Spring type, as well as woman that has brown hair, light green eyes and light skin and as well as woman that has light blond hair, blue-green eyes and light skin... See, these women look different although all of them a Spring type, so that’s why the system was divided into subtypes. The colour analysis is a complex topic and it’s not easy to analyze yourself without knowing color theory and how to differentiate colour characteristics such as temperature, brightness and lightness. That’s why the Colour Harmony class I teach in the WW course is the biggest one, because there’s a lot to learn.

Wow, that was interesting! I would never had thought that someone like Johannes Itten had played a role in creating the colour types. I, by the way, struggled a long time with the various systems. My hair is strawberry blonde and because of that I often find myself automatically in the spring/autumn category. But my skin has definitely a cool undertone and I look best in light summer colours, slightly muted. So redheads, take a second look!

I'm black, medium dark, the only colours I don't wear are the ones that I detest with a passion because they remind me of something else. I use to think I was warm and liked gold jewelry, and wanted more yellow in my foundation... But now I like my skin against silver, gold must not be too yellow. I hate pure colours (no scientific meaning behind pure, by pure I mean textbook examples of what you would show to a child) like purple, yellow, cream, green... I look nice in camel but I detest colours tinged with yellow so I might be abandoning camel, it's either be completely neutral or be a deep rich colour (except purple and yellow). I'd like to find clear definitions for colour and why I like certain ones in my head. I've had a good sense of which colours went together from a young age as I do art, however my only explanation for why they go.together is "good colour combinations makes me feel happy, and bad colours aggravate me".
It's sad that my colour type (Spring) doesn't include my favourite colors, which are mostly deep, dark jewel tones, like dark green. I really dislike the pastels that seem to mostly look best on Spring people. Oh well, I've accepted that I'd rather look old and sick and wear my favourite colors, than that I'd have to wear pastel pink or blue.
yltraviole I have the same problem. I’m a soft autumn. But I love deep bright colors.
Actually, Spring’s type colours are bright and warm, pastels are good only for Summer. Dark green will be ok for a Spring if it’s closer to sage or moss, or even teal ;)

Springs are tricky. That pallet includes both pastels and brights, but the warm version of them. The darkest colors tend to go to Winters and Autumns. But people vary in their own season sometimes as looking best in either their season's palest or darkest shades. Find a copy of the book Color Me Beautiful by Carol Jackson to look at the color ranges for each season.
Just wear whatever colours you like is what I think. Remember that these rules were made really for film. It really isn't that important, so long as you feel comfortable/confident in what you're wearing, don't worry :)
Hi Daria, I have a question about ethical fashion I was hoping you could answer. How do you view buying clothes from stores like TJ Maxx? Does it lie somewhere between buying clothes second hand and first hand, or is it just as harmful as buying directly from the brands?

I'm no expert, but I work in retail so I may be able to give you some information. First of all it is nothing like buying second hand, the closes to that would be purchasing an item that has been returned, but is unworn/undamage and is suitable for resale, any items indicating that they have any signs of being worn/washed/stained/damaged in most good retailers will be taken to a faulty area out of public section of the shop and is usely sent off back to the company (you wouldn't believe how much waste we get from people who just aren't careful when trying an item on, make-up, blood, snot, you name it). From what I can tell TJ/TK Maxx purchase old season stock (usely from online and sometimes from stores) that did not sell, so many brands decide to sell their left over stock to TJ/TK Maxx at a lower cost as it is better then throwing away/destroying their products. They probably still make a loss as most of the branded products are often sold to their cost-to-make(that's just on the constuction of the item) or a similar amount, so the money they make for campaigns, staff, digital presence ect would most likely out way the profit, but like I said it's better then losing the product altogether. However you could argue that if there wasn't a company like TJ/TK Maxx it may encourage brands to make less products, therefore less waste/impact on the enviroment, but honestly there is no right or wrong. You also have to consider people need jobs and fashion, whether you like it or not, keeps people from being unemployed, pays morgages, and feeds families. There aren't jobs that magically appear for people who would have worked in the fashion industries if companies faulter or shops close and you'll continue to see it diminish in the years to come, so unemployment will rise and the cost of living will increase to balance that out. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the fashion industry.
Fallon Mills actually people who are unemployed do find things to do and create new jobs. Buying new is harmful. There are right or wrong answers when you are talking about treating workers ethically and being sustainable.
@@f.u.c8308 I agree that I wish the world could be better for everyone, but the reality is the fashion industry is bad but it's not completely black. I wasn't just talking about people in retail or design, I'm talking about the factories too. There are a lot of people who work in large factories who clock-in and clock-out everyday, that they depend on to help them support their families and keep them from being on the street, prevents starvation, prostitution and gangs. I am not saying all factories/sweat shops are good because they're not and there are many that are terrible (the same way there are terrible work places across all industries) ones that have children working for them are despicable, and yes those need to be stopped, but that doesn't mean all of them are like that. Could all of them need improvement? Yes of course. There does needs to be more health regulations, higher pay and support for their workers. Many countries do depend on the fashion industry as well. Watch Blood, Sweat and T-shirts, although it is an old series now. For some people (I'm not saying all), as terrible as it is, could be way worse off. I would love if there was a law that was instated that ALL clothing must have the Fair Trade symbol, that would be perfect, but sadly they don't do that. And one piece of clothing can travel across the globe before it is completely finished, so it is something that unfortunately is unlikely to ever be done, at least in our life time. But I just don't think avoiding those shops/companies helps. You would have to know exactly where you clothing was harvest, spun, woven/knitted, cut and sewn into and by who, that clothing is the only 'ethical fashion', finding out that history is difficult and yes the industry is to blame for that. I would love a movement that everyone across the world banded together to insist on a Fair Trade law on fashion, but that won't happen. I understand if you want to boycott because of the environmental issues that is fully understandable, fast-fashion is TERRIBLE on our planet, that's mostly due to pollutant dyes. but sadly there are just some issues that get brought up when companies go down, I think of the millions of good people who need a job across the world, the less money that comes into the company does effect the people at the source. If you don't want to buy first hand from highstreet shops good for you, there are many that are bad, but there are good companies too. You would be helping charities and the environment, personally I make a lot of my own clothes from new and recycled fabrics/garments. But it will make a difference to companies that support those people. We need to think about improving their jobs/work environment, not taking their income away. We don't need to get rid of the industry, we need to change the way it's run.
Morgan B that is not always the case. Jobs didn’t just magically appear when the steel mills in Indiana shut down. Go check out Gary, IN sometime if the roads are still drivable. Those people lost everything. They didn’t have any funds to “create new jobs”. They had to start over from scratch.
Morgan B PS by all means vote with your pocketbook but consider that there are morally ambiguous choices, even when looking at ethics and sustainability since in the big picture we are a closed system and everything can shift from a small change.

Yeah I know what you mean :) but the logic behind it is that in the summer we mostly see cold colours in nature like shades of blue, lavender, pink,... they also light and a little overexposed because of the sun... But actually it doesn’t really matter what we call them.. we can call them anything... type 1,2,3,4... , it’s more important to know what color characteristic they all have and what is the difference between them

Red suits me the best but other fall colors such as yellow mustard or orange looks horrible on my , so what is my color pallet ?pink looks horrible on me too
Try different types of orange and pink and any colour for that matter .. Even the intensity of colour makes a difference.
Also the shade of red can make a difference. There's a range from more cool, bluish reds to warmer, more orangey reds. Depending on the shade, red can look good on more than one color pallet.

Don't watch if you're looking for common misconceptions about color type or what you can do to fix it if it's not quite working, or if you're looking for any "secret" color type history. Overall nice and interesting video that didn't need the shameful lure-in heading or thumb.
I'm so confused about my color type because i look best in earthy colors aka warm tones while cool colors in clothes or makeup wash me out a lot but some people say my skin tone is cool?? but if i look best with warm tones doesnt that indicate that my skin tone is warm?
Hard to say... the skin undertone is just only one element that need to be considered out of 4 (eyes, hair undertone, saturation). I have a special Colour Harmony class that will teach you how to perform the color test correctly and identify your type, what colors to choose for your clothes and make up. I suspect that the people telling you that your skin tone is cool are mistaken.
If you look best in earthy, warm tones, then your skin tone would be warm, yes. There are many different degrees of warmth or coolness to skin however. Your skin color may look a bit closer to neutral than very warm, but the undertone would still lean warm.
If your skin is very light, people will assume that you are cool while very light can be warm-toned as well.

Hi Daria, your video was very informative as always. However, the fact that everything that has to do with some sort of "standardisation" in the fashion and beauty world excludes a large array of women of colour raises concern.
Actually, Robert Dorr tested ALL races when he developed his Color Key System. So, The Seasonal Color Typology suits all women, no matter the color of the skin. The problem is that a lot of unprofessional people made it look like it was only meant for white people. Most of the people on UA-cam, for example, have no idea what they are talking about when they "teach" you find your type.
According to me, there is only one human race but I understand what you mean, thank you for the information. However, when I was watching your video I did not get a sense of diversity. But you don't have to, what you put in your videos is your choice and I enjoy the majority of them. I was simply voicing a concern and I think the bias is real in the industry of fashion and beauty.
The video was about Hollywood in 1920s-50s. There weren’t any women of color that had main roles at that time (unfortunately of course). I am sorry you felt like this video wasn’t diverse enough, it wasn’t my intention. I tried my best to make this video interesting, but I cannot change the history.
Yes, of course the video is interesting ! I enjoyed the historical content very much and I am aware of the social context at that time. But contemporary celebrities were also portrayed in this video. Daria Andronescu I disagree. For example, Dita Von Teese's main characteristic of "cold, bright, dark" is cold. So she is a True Winter. But Ann Hathaway's main characteristic is bright. She is a Bright Winter.

The difference is in the color pallet: "dark-cool-bright" (Penelope), "cool-bright-dark" (Dita), "bright-cool-dark" (Ann). Before people relied on their own taste I guess. Besides, the Munsell color system was only invented in the beginning of 20th century. Before that people didn’t know anything about color dimensions, they couldn’t explain why red is red.

Hmmmm. I love you...but as a custom color consultant, not everyone falls into one of four neat and tidy seasons. The human race is far more varied in coloring. If there were only four types, it'd be super easy to figure out which one you were and you wouldn't have any niggling (or bigger) doubts about any colors in your palette. Looking at my profile pic, what would you say I was? I don't neatly fit into summer or winter. My eyes are warm, my hair is cool, my skin is neutral-cool, my hair is cool...my blush is neutral-warm. But when I do colors, I don't use labels. I simply see which colors make that person look fantastic. Suzanne Caygill should be mentioned in the history of personal color. The 4 seasons approach was a dumbed down and much simplified version of her work. She had her own TV show in the 1950s and did and taught custom color and style, eventually publishing a book in 1980 about her work, fourteen years before her death. She had many types within each season and created new 'types' as needed when clients came who didn't fit into any of those she'd already named. Color Me Beautiful simplified this into 4 palettes. After 4 seasons were used for a while, some consultants expanded it to 12 thinking this enough and others to 16...but it's still not nearly enough. Human coloring is far too unique! I hope you don't hate me posting this - I just don't want people to think something is wrong with their vision for not feeling happy in one of four palettes - or even 16.
Of course, any typology (4/12/24 seasons) is not 100% precise and won’t fit everyone. Only a pro can give you a 100% precise palette. I agree, that the label is not important in the eyes of the pro consultant. We see things others don’t. But for ordinary people that don’t know anything about color it is useful to have some kind of a system.
I told my students a thousand times that they most probably are wrong about their undertones and types, and the only way to figure out the right answers is to learn how to do the color test by themselves and see things they didn’t notice before.
S.Caygill came after Dorr (they actually were friends) and created a business around it! She did divided the system into more categories so more people can relate to it. After her they were more professionals that tried to make it even easier for people to identify their type... that’s why we have so many different system, although non of them will ever give you a precise result, unless you go for a pro image consultation ;)
Daria Andronescu , I knew I loved you for good reaon. Yes, agree it is great for people who haven’t thought about personal color to start! Many people just think about the colors they like, too, without thinking about colors WITH them.
