  • This week we have our buddy Johnathan Holsomeback, also known as John Boy by those who know him, on the show to talk about building history with and targeting specific bucks! Subjects include:
    - How he religiously re-scouts areas he already has years of history with
    - Hunting through a timber rotation, hunting cutover vs young pines vs thinned pines
    - How big bursts of hunting pressure can displace bucks
    - Nailing down a bucks core area in thick pine country
    - How the BIGGEST BUCKS don't really use community scrapes, but have their own scrapes
    - Placing trail cams to get a buck on cam every 1-3 days
    - Hunting the "medusa buck"
    - Unorthodox scent tactics
    - Calling deer with a snort wheeze in the South
and TONS more! This had to be one of our favorite episodes of 2023 and we know you will get a lot out of it. If you enjoy the show, please share it with a buddy or five!

“We only had 360 acres for huntin” buddy I don’t have any land let alone land I can just hunt and not farm. These guys complain about the wrong things 😂😂. Maybe say I’m so grateful my daddy had land to pass down to me so I don’t have to deal with the public landers

So I hunt an area that cameras are illegal. Being that I've ran cameras and obviously haven't. I can say what I am about to say with certainty. Hunting without a camera and seeing a buck or that buck for the first time feels like I'm 12 years old sitting with my dad. The excitement is there.

No doubt! We have podcasts guest just like you that don't run cameras as well and say the same thing.

I’ve done the slingshot thing for years but I would just pour some pee on a rock and fling it. If I didn’t have a sling I’d just find a stick or rock and just toss it. It is mainly to stop the buck to get a good shot so it doesn’t have to be super far from where I am. Another thing I learned many years ago from my granddaddy was to take a tarsal gland of of another buck that you or someone else shot that’s nice and stinky and poke a hole in it and tie a string to it and your boot and drag it until you get to your spot. I’ve used a tarsal on one leg and a drag rag with doe pee on the other and have killed bucks trailing the scent like a dog to my spot. It works the best if the tarsal your using came from a different area . I believe the buck gets worked up thinking a new buck he doesn’t recognize has come to his area. Sounds crazy but I know it works.

You fellas didn't drink much of that moonshine from that Mason jar !! I get a kick out of your sense of humours. You put out a great podcast. Even if I don't live anywhere close to a Southern State, I still get a real good variety of information from your show.

Older bucks will scent check scrapes about 100 yrdz away or so..I have seen them run the downwind ridge across a hollow scent checking does in a cutover to amd never walking the ridge that the cut borders.
