This scene was absolutely perfect. They sold to us completely in 5 minutes Maria and Shadow's relationship in this movie from this one scene. Immediately makes Maria a likeable character, and even if you're unfamiliar with the games you understand that something tragic is gonna happen to her.

Maria wore 1970’s clothes, they had a record player, the tv they watched everything on was small and black and white. It wasn’t till the late 70’s when colored tv became more popular. These historical details made this feel more like a piece of shadow’s history. And the roller skates too! Roller skating was hot in the 70’s! My mom went to undergrad in the 70’s and told me roller skating was very very popular at the time!
i hate to rain on your parade but, the song they're listening to is from 1988! I wouldn't mind so much if it was non-diegetic, but they draw attention to how they're listening to the record. (I wanna stress I'm only having a bit of fun. i LOVE this movie! its actually funny that in a movie where alien hedgehogs breathe in space, that THIS is the one thing that took me out of the movie XD)

This film not getting nominated for any Oscar’s is absurd. The dynamic’s between Shadow & Maria and Team Sonic is outstanding and a treasure to watch. The film itself is a masterpiece. 🙌

Shadow loved Maria more than anything in the universe they were both kids at the time. Like all kids they were curious, playful, learning new things, trying to navigate the world and finding new things about themselves, Shadow was like Sonic until he lost her then he just became confused, upset and angry at the world for taking away Maria from him. I love how they portrayed their dynamic in this movie because it shows how their relationship was and him exploring things together with Maria

Everyone in theater I was in were all laughing, so were their young children, but when I saw Maria drew that rabbit face on the glass, I was like awww, because of how cute the young girl Maria was, how she did that like what any child would do for a friend who is an animal.
I love how unlike the other humans, Maria absolutely had no fear of Shadow at all. Where everyone else saw an experimental subject and/or a dangerous alien. She saw a potential friend, who eventually did become her Bestest friend in the world. 🥰
Given the context of where Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow come from in this franchise, do you think Shadow is from the same planet as Sonic but was jettisoned after they realized his power was too chaotic to control or something? And before anyone starts biting my head off, I know of Shadow's actual backstory from the games (even though I've never played any of the games).
The meteorite that Shadow arrived in looked like it's related to Black Doom. So that part most likely is still true, just means that Black Doom made Shadow without Geralt.
I'm thinking the movie-makers will probably incorporate the Black Arms into Shadow's origin. They likely sent their special lifeform Shadow to conquer the Earth or something, only for him to have no memory of his original purpose or for him to be a sleeper agent of sorts.
Until one fateful day, as they were escaping the facility because they were gonna take Shadow away. An explosion occurred and Maria was killed in the ensuing chaos.
shadow was in games in 2000. meaning he was born in 1950, not 1970. maria died on space ark and never seen earth before. they both lived in the ark. its a good scene but could be a little more accurate. shadow was locked up for 50 years and wwas brought back in 2000.
I think she should've showed him the Iron Giant. Wait, if this was 50 years ago, then the film wasn't out yet, right? Never mind then. 😅 Still, that would've been a fitting film for Shadow.
I feel like the movie could had a bit of a longer backstory with Maria. Because while i know the movie needed to get to the point fast, idk, maybe an extra 5 mins to stablish Maria's character and make her know Shadow in a more organic way could had been perfect for this movie.

Well in the games, he had a lot more going on. And considering how he was born, he’s just not that expressive; even before she died.
He smiled when he saw Maria in Sonic Generations.
I know it probably won't happen, but I kind of hope we will still see moments of this side of Shadow in the future.
