    nylon guitar strings X2 (plain nylon 1-3 guitar strings ) can be used to get a sound similar to gut, Violin strings are wound, metal cored or metal wound synthetic cored

  • @michaeljking

    The Lyre Kit comes with Fluorocarbon strings, which are last longer than real gut and have a great tone

    Great work! lol you along inspired me to start building my own lyres! I'm trying a lute mold atm.. really hard.. :(

  • @Gnomewoodworker
    @Gnomewoodworker 14 років тому

    I have Robert Lundbergs Historical Lute construction.. and a few plans for a 6 coarse Lute.. I have been using a plan for 9 wedges to make a mold for a 9 rib lute.. Its easier to start with a medieval Lute and a rounder bowl.. then the renaissance lute!

    The sound of these lyres is mesmerizing. what other woods can be used for the project?

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  5 років тому

      Historically maple was the chosen wood for soundboards but other woods like iike oak and yew were used for the body. I have used Yew, oak ash. Beech my recent lyre video has a lyre with red cedar soundboard. My kravik lyres are usually spruce. For student lyres I have also used American tulip poplar which can be similar to soft maple

    • @julianporcel8184
      @julianporcel8184 5 років тому

      Michael J King I’m from South America, so the woods I have access to are very different from those in the northern hemisphere. I’m not really concerned about historical accuracy, but I do want a playable lyre. What exactly I am looking for when selecting the wood for the different parts of the instrument? I have access to laurel (relatively hard wood), pine, eucaliptus, probably cedar. Thank you very much indeed, and I am sorry to bother. You already have done a lot for me by posting these videos.

      Also álamo (I think it’s a kind of poplar), which is a pale and soft wood readily available in my place

      @@julianporcel8184 if I was in South America I would be looking at various Nothofagus/ southern beech Trees. Roble? These would give a similar tone to maple . Any timber locally available would work in truth. Naranja wood mango acaca. Pine

    which is best to use nylon or metal strings?which way basically do you put the heavier gauge strings to the lighter ones if using metal strings.am trying to finish my lyre and want to get string placement the best way for a nice tone.I would like to tune it to an E Diatonic pitch..

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  6 років тому +1

      james arterburn my first lyre I built in 1989 used the plain nylon strings from two sets of classical guitar strings 3 3 2 2 1 1 for a g diatonic tuning 21" scale I think that's still a cheap starting point to experiment with, for tuning lower look at your instrument and decide historical instruments are not designed for high tension strings wound strings are not found on early lyres either when someone wants a lower pitch instrument in e for example I suggest they build my oberfkacht or trossingem lyre model plan I supply

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  6 років тому

      I use fluorocarbon strings mostly as they are very forgiving with tunings more so than gut or nylon on a Sutton hoo lyre they can go from e diatonic to g diatonic and still sound ok

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  6 років тому

      james arterburn the sizes for each lyres model are on my lyre plans( 15 plans for on my lyres making DVD) it's not a simple answer as I have different sets of strings for different lyre models and pitches, I also sell fluorocarbom string sets for lyres on my etsy shop and can make up custom sets to other pitches to order. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Thelyreshop

    ehkm... pardon my ignorance, but where is the sound hole?

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  7 років тому +1

      These lyres didn't always them, apart from one example in Germany. Anyway They work slightly differently from a guitar. The back is thick, soundbox shallow and the top graduated and the treble sound projects very well.

      @@michaeljking would adding a sound hole make a difference?

    • @michaeljking
      @michaeljking  5 років тому

      @@jocelynleon6331 these didn't usually have them, they are thin bodied instruments with a pitch close to a ukulele. Not really a bass instrument. That said some did have small holes drilled,. In my last couple of recent lyre videos on my channel I demonstrated a maple top lyre with two small holes drilled and a cedar top lyre with no holes drilled. The holes make a small difference on the maple top in the sound you hear as a performer mostly I think.
