Badminton - Grip & Wrist Exercises (part 1)

- This video is the first of a mini series of videos I’ve prepared, showing you how to develop your grip for forehand and backhand shots and the wrist movements associated with each. This skill in particular is EXTREMELY important for beginner and intermediate level players in order to improve hand-eye coordination and feel for the racket and shuttle upon impact. It will teach you how to be efficient in your strokes and emphasise the use of shuttle propulsion by using the string’s elastic modulus (elasticity) and gravity. This skill will help develop and improve your underhand lifts and net shots and is a progression towards learning how to tumble and spin the shuttle.

Many thanks for another great video! Regarding the forehand grip, some people advocate holding it further out in the fingers (meaning that the grip will be as you illustrate it once finger tightening has occurred post-contact). Is this just a question of personal preference or are there clear pros/cons for each method? Furthermore, some people suggest gripping more firmly with the bottom two fingers, whereas others suggest pinching the racket more firmly with the thumb/index finger. What are your thoughts on this?
Max Renn what you e described all correct. It determines or is determined by your style. Lin Dan for example has the index finger way up. Whereas LCW has it lower. Most have it lower. But you’re right, it’ll come down during and post contact especially after hitting hard. And firm at the bottom is another way of being loose in the fingers, basically turning your racket into a longer lever. Pinching with index and thumb is usually during underhand backhands but can also be used in overheads. But again just depends on your style. What I’m trying to bring across here is the looseness of how you hold the grip. It’s just a way to practice so you feel and use the weight of the racket. Hence why top rackets come as head heavy. It’s so that you use the racket as an instrument of power and control. You just need very good control in order to make use of it. My big thing is experimenting on the back of fundamentals. In this case, feeling the weight. Hope that helps.
@@PritPachu Extremely helpful response, as always! Inadvertently over-tightening under pressure is an issue for me (as with many other people, I'd imagine), so I'm experimenting with wrapping the bottom two fingers around the handle to provide a firm anchor point whilst keeping the hand relaxed. One other thing I wanted to ask was this: when aligning for an overhead, should one ideally be directly behind the shuttle or (as a right-hander) should the shuttle be slightly to our right, given that after the body rotation it should more or less be above the right shoulder?
Wonderful points, on footwork and grip. I will try those. Show more exercises like these to improve the game without partner.
Nice video😍😍
excellent video for this exercise
Soooo good. Thank you
Thank you Mr Prit Pachu. Your videos are very useful, informative, and clear.
Nanda kumar thank you very much. Much appreciated

I'm watching in yours, sports just came up now on me feed.
Thank You.
Aloha Coach Prit, thanks much for this video. I was never very good at this forehand and backhand drill, no matter how much I worked at it and always admired those who did it well. You have provided me with the keys to mastering this drill. Thanks again for taking the time to put this video together I really appreciate it and know it will greatly benefit my game as I practice it using your tips.
Bryan Chun great happy it’s of done use to your game! Keep up your updates to me!

Good
Hi Prit, I have been learning to play badminton for a month already, and I find your videos are really helpful - especially for beginners like me. I want to ask if you can show some exercises to increase the power/strength of the wrist. All the shots I play are very weak which really disappoints me. Thank you very much!
4 Mùa Phiêu Lưu Ký thanks for your nice comment and question. If you start an overall strength & conditioning program, it will be a good start. The act of handling weight with your hands / wrist will give them strength. Focusing on just your wrist is not safe. Very small bones. But lifting dumbbells and working with weight in general is the best start. I’ll be launching my website soon and we’ll be able to connect better through my site. You will see. Stay tuned.
@@PritPachu Thank you! Look forward to seeing your website.

I noticed that while you doing backhand you are using side of your thumb finger. I tried that but it's not getting much power as flat side of thumb. Which is better?
Aniyan C it’s not actually the side. It looks like that from the camera angle. I am a bit on the bevel. Use the flat side as I am teaching but turn the grip slightly so it re adjust the racket angle. I am trying to make sure players understand that the backhand first starts with learning how to use the thumb with the flat side on the flat side of the grip. Then any deviations from this can be applied properly without losing the fundamentals. Hope that makes sense.
@@PritPachu thank you very much sir, it's really nice reply from you.

What is the meaning of moving on the balls of your feet? I heard it a lot but I have no idea
H c basically on your toes but not actually your toes. “The ball of the foot is the padded portion of the sole between the toes and the arch, underneath the heads of the metatarsal bones.”
Wry usefull
Thought better if there's subtitle as audio say, sometimes maybe want low sound or not have earphone
What are you trying to say bro?

Badminton is basic all about rotation of arm, wrist on certin axis this is not Hitting.
Very common mistake many people do this as hitting (Hammering)
