      Socket power does not equal power over the cable. There is efficiency loss via the power inverter so really you need to just probe the cable itself to make an accurate test.

    More people need this so they look at it and wonder why they are seeing the numbers they are seeing. This will force them to educate themselves on POWER PROFILES. Just because a power source is 90W, doesn't mean you can get 90W even if your device supports 90W! There has to be a compatible profile for it to talk to. An amazing example of this is Apple's 90W charger. You would think getting an iPad Pro and paring it with their 90W adapter would be awesome, right? WRONG! The iPad has no compatible profile for it. In fact I think it maxes out around 60W but even better than that is you will NEVER get 60W out of that 90W adapter because it has no compatible 60W profile for the iPad Pro, THEIR OWN PRODUCT! I've been able to get 60W into my iPad Pro from an Anker adapter but nothing from Apple, not even their 60W adapters. So all those people buying larger Apple adapters for their iPads....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
    Keep in mind, all this info comes from iPad Pro 2nd Gen. I've not look at it since then since my Anker gives me max power. Hell, even my 12V Anker adapter in my truck gives me more power than any of Apple's adapters that I tested!

    • @MaximNightFury

      So what you're saying is Apple power adapters are shit and you should go third party?

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay 2 роки тому +38

      @@MaximNightFury I wouldn't really say that. They are designed well for their laptops. iPad owners certainly need to stop buying them for iPads and I most certainly would not buy them as general use adapters around the house.

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay 2 роки тому +27

      Luckily more and more companies started putting all the various profiles their chargers support on the product itself. But the missing part are devices listing their own profiles to which you are charging. It doesn't help if my charger lists all it's profiles but my iPad doesn't list what it supports. If they did it would be super easy to match things up.
      For those people that don't know what a power profile is...look at your charger and find text that looks like 5V2A. That's 5 volts at 2 AMPs which equals 10 Watts. So that charger can do exactly that. Some chargers will show you many different profiles.
      Something I noticed in the past, the smaller the charger, the fewer profiles it supports. That seems to be slowly going away.

    Power draw is determined primarily by the device being charged, not the charging block. The Wattage listed on the charger is just how high it can go before frying.

  • @andrebrait
    @andrebrait 11 місяців тому +3

    Even if you ignore the fact the devices always negotiate the lowest common denominator (device power and charger max power), the devices also vary what they ask from the charger based on their own charge!
    For example, a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will charge at 45W only until a given percentage. After that, it charges slower, to preserve the battery and reduce heat output.
    That's why it takes about the same time to charge it with a 25W charger as it does to charge it with a 45W one, with the difference being mostly on the first couple dozen battery percentages.

    Better to buy a dedicated pass-thru meter to do the measuring so you don't use it when needed but it's a good thing to have so you can tell if x charger or x cable functions correctly, you might own some crap cable for example that makes your device charge 6 hours instead of 3 hours.

    TL;DR : Lower battery % Higher wattage, Higher battery % Lower wattage.
    Long version: Your device determines the wattage more than the brick.
    Particularly at what level your battery is. If your device's battery is closer to empty, you're likely to get more wattage that's closer to what your device & brick advertised it supports. Once you're above 50% battery, the wattage tapers off the closer to 100% you get.
    It's for battery safety and minimizes wasted energy efficiency in the form of heat.

    Although not a requirement, it is definitely a nice to have. Also useful for troubleshooting when devices want to be cantankerous with charging.

    I feel you need to make a control test for this to see if it's actually accurate

      Someone else already has, I forgot who but someone did a side by side and the product is accurate enough within margin of error.

    It should have a button to change the units from Wats(W) to Amps (A)

    I have one of those, they are cheap as heck to buy but the quality appears to be pretty nice. mine works fine.

    This is best tested if you align your phone coils to the wireless charger correctly since the wattage fluctuates.

    I had one of these turn up yesterday, I don't follow the guy so weird timing.
    It's not exactly accurate.

    I wouldn't call it a need. But, it is certainly useful for knowing if you're pulling too much.

    I mean.... If it's accurate or something it be great for diagnosis charging issues but you can get far more robust ones than that

    It's super fragile. Was a bedside charger for me. I'm pretty gentle and cables usually last me years. This one only lasted a about 5 or 6 weeks before needing to be wrapped to work properly.

    I rather stick to a small usb c meter. Which gives you so much more info and you can just leave it on the cable.

    Did you compare charging time to verify it isn't impeding the power?
