One of my all time favorites. I love their old name...Water Ouzel.

Well you just answered a question I had on Sunday. In the Poudre Canyon there is a picnic area right next to the river called Ouzel. I have often wondered why it was named that. I am guessing it is named for the dippers! Thanks!

I think the "dancing" one is a youngster, and the other "dipping" one is bringing it food. I see something similar with sparrows - the young ones flutter their wings while waiting for mom or dad to bring a treat. Maybe both movements are a method for exercising those baby muscles?

These birds all dip, adults and young ones. They do it continually when out of the water in the instances I've seen them and in all I've read about them. Yes, the fatter bird is a young one, but they both do the dipping dance!
