Bought a GS Mini Koa for the hype and beauty. Then saw reviews like this and found a mint condition 2015 Martin Dreadnought Jr. 1- 3/4 nut and perfect 24 “ scale length for me. Base response was a huge leap up from GS mini. I have Retro string and Tusq nut, saddle and pins on her from the bone saddle and plastic pins it can with. It sounds just amazing for the size. When I play the new 10 version in the store, it’s okay and sounds similar to the GS Mini I have, but hands down, the Older version has that Martin base response that I cannot live without.
Thanks Derek.
I bought a DJr 10 last year not knowing anything about the original. I replaced the nut, saddle, and pins with bones and all I can say is this little gal just sings. I play fingerstyle and the sustain and overtones are dazzling for such a small guitar. When I read all the comments of those preferring the original, makes me want it. But here's one voice saying the 10 is terrific. Much more guitar than the GS mini, which I also own and enjoy.
Thank you for the comparison. Made my decision easier. Just ordered a used DJR. The tone of the older model is exactly what I was looking for. Rich and full bodied despite its size. Sounds like a real dreadnought to my ears. Excited!!!
Thank you!
Gotta go with the original DJR.
Excellent demo and excellent description of the sonic differences - the Djr-10 is definitely more balanced through the tonal range, but I prefer the more rich fullness of the D Junior.
Thanks a lot!
Original Djr sounds so much fuller. When I think Martin the older Djr has the exact sound I imagine.
I have the first original model and love it. The original Dred Jr. sounds better (IMO). Is Martin going to keep the Original Dred JR. available to those who want it ? I hope so ! !
The 10 sound a bit nasal-y to my ear. I think I like the DJR in its original design. I listened with my eyes closed and the change was apparent (and less pleasant) almost every time. The only time I preferred the DJR-10, was the arpeggiated chords at the end (at 4:20 and 4:33 respectively).
Everyone is discussing the sound which is important, but part of the issue is travel and portability. You can always spend more and get a bigger guitar that sounds better but one has to decide why one is buying it.
That's a very good point!
The Djr-10 got more harmonic overtones in finger picking to my ears
I think they fixed it till they broke it
The original sounds much better, richer bass, more complex overtones.
I agree!
DJR-10 for me.
Thanks for your vote!
So grateful that I saw this video before ordering mine. I had a hard time finding it but was able to snag the original model. Not a fan of the "even" sound of the new version
The original is my choice. The new one sounds like a cheaper guitar in comparison.
lol, how? it's a bit reworked sonically but all else is equal
@@mollers92 , you would hope they have kept the sounds as original as possible. But who knows?
D Jr was so lit fiyahh!! Wish i could afford buying ..
New model sounds kinda thin. I prefer the original. Both sound good though!
I'll take either one over a gs mini
I just played a D jr and a GS mini back to back today. No real comparison for me. The Martin sounded better everywhere. The wider nut and 24" scale were more to my liking as well.
Definitely prefer the old model. New one sounds like a Taylor academy 10. Must be a jab at Taylor. Like Samsung and apple phone war lol
Academy 10 is a full size dreadnought and sounds like one so I dont understand the comparison. The only thing scaled down on that Academy is the scale length. The body is the same size as my Yamaha FG. Much larger than the DJR10
Interesting. I thought the deeper body would make it bassier but I cannot tell the difference in terms of the low notes. The new DJR10 seems to be producing the same bass response and at the same time brighter on the mids and highs. I thought I would prefer the older DJR but my ears are telling me the DJR10 sounded better.
EDIT: OK I watched the video finished. The older DJR is better xD
thanks...very helpful video
Glad it helped. Please like & subscribe.
Glad I have the original
👍
Glad I've got the original...
The 10 is best to my ears
I compared the 2020 Martin D JR and the Taylor GS Mini in the story for hours. I took home the Taylor. However, after hearing a few reviews like this one, I bought a pre-owned 2014 Martin D JR. Guess what? The 2014 Martin made both the new Martin and the Taylor sound like toys. I really wanted to like the Taylor as it has a tuner and a much better bag, but tone is king. I returned the Taylor (thanks Sam Ash for your 30 day return policy.)
You did well !
djr sounds more "impressive and bass heavy" but djr10 sounds more "flat, even and correct". I guess most audiophiles would pick the newer model over the older. Most people just get impressed by the bassier old one though. Me? I appreciate both for what they offer
Beautifully worded!
DJR-10 is a bit better for me, it´s more balanced and sounds clearer, but old djr sounds more like full-size guitar.
it´s hard to choose one.
You are lucky to live in US, I cannot find an original DJr in France, they don't sell it any more, they deliver the DJr 10 which is by far less bassy. Have to try to find a used one, but owners of that jewel just keep them !
Enjoy !
As heard thru earbuds on my iPad ... prefer the original ... esthetically as well.
I much prefer the older model.
SPOON IS AWESOME!
Looking for advice.
I read a review from Nov. 2018, and on the "Cons" of the Martin D Jr the reviewer mentioned the
lack of a "double action truss rod". Does that mean that the truss rod on the Jr can only be adjusted one way? If so,
that's kind of a deal breaker for me. The author doesn't refer to the guitar as the DJR10.
I copied and pasted the author's Pros/Cons below.

Pros & Cons
Let’s summarize this Martin D Jr. review. These are the main insights.
Pros
Classic Martin timbre
Excellent build quality
Convenient size
Smooth playability
Few junior guitars can match a Martin D Jr. And it’s affordable for a Martin.
Cons
No double-action truss rod
No cutaway
Every time Spoon switched from the original D Junior to the DJR-10 it sounded like someone just kicked on a compressor that was turned up too high. Instead of improved, tone has been removed. I seriously doubt that decreasing the depth for the sake easier storage is a strong selling point. Guitars are meant to be played, not stored. Thanks for the review.
Great point!
I have the original one that I bought in 2015. I put bone nut, saddle and pins on it. It sounds fantastic. I don't like the new ones. They should not have messed with the recipe.
and put it on elixir strings sounds much better than others ( martin, addario...)
I find that combo (bone nut/saddle + elixirs) make it sound a LOT more brighter. Not sure if i like it.
What’s exactly the difference between both models? Just one is original and the other isn’t?
the new version is slightly more narrow, and has a beveled back edge.
He answered your question during the video. Did you not pay attention?
I was about to buy a Taylor GS Mini-e Mahogany and I suddenly changed my mind.
what kind of strings you put preferably on this guitar?, I put myself elixir strings
Elixir PB 12s Is what I use, they make it sound a bit brighter combined with the bone nut n saddle that I put in there.
Comes with Martin PB Medium strings. Louder and less playable with those, you might prefer, but I found stiff Light/medium strings like the DR Veritas 12-54 to sound perfect on my older DR Jr.
So far, everyone agrees the older model sounds much better. Too bad they made the change. Bad decision, Martin.
Are these both electric as well?
No. That model ends in E. “DJR-10E”
At first, I already decided to buy DJR-10. However after watching this review, I changed my mind and go to buy DJR from the second hand guitar shop. Yeah I go with the original DJR sound. Thanks for the review.
no comparison whatsoever, the earlier one shames the new one in the bass department. what happened to the original djr i bought from you guys years ago which was actual wood (solid rosewood, i think)? i told everyone it was the quality bargain of any guitar made and you even gave me a 'free' martin hard case with it. i suspect it would put the 2018 model in this video to shame. /guy
Old style fitts me better. New ,not impressed.
Wow. I like the old one much better.
Hi Sir nice review! Do you think that the bridge pin holes of this Djr10e is standard size like from all Martin? Because i plan to buy Graptech bridge pins, and not sure if traditonal or presentation style will fit the pin holes... 🤔
Total novice here. To my ears the 10 sounded a bit muffled when strummed. I preferred the original but it could just be because it sounded louder!
The original all day long
Nice picking the DJr is better more complex.
old better
Bhoooou Sheet! The old one is beter.
Boxy 10 no thanks, like playing in a shoe box by comparison. D jr definitely, Martin appealing to fashion!
Not an improvement IMO. If it isn't broke.......don't fix it ! Gotta make a USA Martin HD28 with Fishman MX-T in the ORIGINAL Martin Dred JR. specs. It will sell ! ! Folks who like the rich warm sound , looks of the HD28 with built in gig ready electronics but want the comfort of a smaller size dred for playability , travel, and ..... made in Nazareth, PA like the full size HD28.
DONE WITH THESE DAMN MINI'S AND JR'S ..EVER PLAY A $100 DEAN PARLOR?.....YOU BETTER..
