I'm exactly the same, Ryan. Listening to Band-Maid makes me feel better. That's why I listen to Band-Maid every single day - when I wake up, drinking my first (and second) cup of coffee, driving to work, driving home, and then interspersed throughout the evening. I actually can't get enough of them! They are my own personal brand of (insert drug that makes you happy here).
Band-Maid has been evolving into their unique sound (No God/Black Hole/Sense/Corallium). I hope they keep creating songs like "Shake That" which have the classic rock and roll vibes. I love their new neo-progressive stuff but I also love their bluesy, funky, jazzy, poppy, punky, metallic rock.
I bought this CD from Japan and didn't realize that it came with a DVD that had the MVs for "REAL EXISTENCE" and "Don't Let Me Down" with it. I like that kind of surprise.
I love that they do that as an option. Almost every album they have out comes with an alternate Limited Edition with video disk. A few even have photo books included. Even a few of the singles have cool alternates.
Ah, Akutsu sensei (composer). If you remember the commented version of the acoustic concert there is a moment where they talk about the musicality of his compositions and the respect that they professes for him. They are always respectful and grateful to all those who made them grow. Then 2016 arrived and when they took charge of their career become in epoch composers was a matter of time. But it all started from the fact that they had ears, intelligence and respect to learn. All this gives a clue to who they really are, geniuses who inspiration always catches them working.
Funny, that reminds me of the attitude RUSH had. Even to the point where Neil Peart took lessons, years after being successful, because he thought that he still could improve. These ladies are always working at improving their talents - to our benefit. Great reaction and thoughts Ryan - thank you.
For me, getting back to Band-Maid after listening to other stuff is like working away and taking a break to have that ultimate mug of coffee! The instrumental break in this song is nothing short of genius the way it is constructed and played.
Not only this song, but also BAND-MAID's vocalist, SAIKI's way of singing and MIKU's way of putting lyrics are made with the emphasis on "overall musicality". This means that the majority of the lyrics in Japanese are inaudible even to those of us who speak Japanese on a daily basis. BAND-MAID's songs are not created by attaching a melody to the lyrics, but rather by KANAMI first creating the image of the song, then MIKU adding the lyrics, and finally all the members making adjustments to maximize the role of each instrument and the sound effect. This process is unique. This process is unique, as it results in the creation of a large number of well-balanced songs that reflect the opinions of all the members, who are specialists in guitar, bass, drums, chorus, etc. It is also the driving force behind the unparalleled diversity and uniqueness of the more than 100 songs. Under the leadership of KANAMI, all the members of the band are able to show their spontaneity and self-assertion to the full in the process of composing. This is the main source of the band's infinite talent. It is clear that the band's good rapport and active exchange of ideas contribute to the creativity of the band.
We all have that feeling when we listen to BAND-MAID, in my case I have listened to many bands from different countries, many languages...but these five ladies...these five incredible artists have made me happy for a couple of years...and they will continue doing it, they are unique...!!! Thank you very much Ryan for spreading this incredible craze called BAND-MAID!!!
You reacted to Shake That and Catharsis (acoustic) on the same day, not many bands have that wide of range of music. Shake That is just an ol' school rocker played to perfection. Definitely want to keep your eye on the speedometer if this is playing.
Good point! When this song pops up and I'm on my motorcycle next thing I'm "dancing" by doing a slalom course with the road stripes. Probably not the safest thing in the world. But it may be one of the most fun things!
Thank you for reacting to the hidden gems of BAND-MAID xD It's not their songwriting, but the BAND-MAID sound was already established in this era! Kanami's solos and riffs are super cool🤘
Kanami said she wrote a song she didn’t know how to play. (I can’t remember which one! Ah!). Then practiced for several months before she was satisfied with the result. Who else composes a song they can’t play? Her musical IQ is off the charts.
The riffs that Kaname comes up with are just so brilliant. As is the whole song construction. Old or new, they are all so insane. Such a brilliant band. It's like your mind is a Rubics Cube & they just keeps twisting it around without the intent of solving it for you.
In an interview, she has said she experiments with her guitar each day and records them, in case she will want to use it later. I wonder how many rif treasures are on that recording waiting for us.
I'll say it here and take the heat. I respect and enjoy many of the Japanese bands but no band has the ability to just make me feel inside the music, alive, like Band-Maid.
This band is able to incorporate every decade of hard rock and put their own twist to it… in one song! Is there anything they do that isn’t awesome? Keep Rockin’!
Another great review of an awesome track. I love this track and the majority of Band-Maid's early stuff. It has an early Metallica feel. I have to admit that it took me a bit longer to love the newer stuff, I believe I was caught off guard at first but It did not take long for it grasp me and pull me further down the pigeonhole.

Another earlier favorite ! Akane is going ham on the drums and It’s a decently long solo by Kanami. There’s a 2016 “Shake That” performance in a small Paris club recorded by a fan, who happened to be in front of Misa and her amp. Miss’s bass playing is awesome in this song. Good review !
It seems that every fan recorded video I've seen has the camera on Misa's side of the stage. Misa's bass is clearly heard but this his makes it hard to hear Kanami in the audio.
@@geoffb5 : 😂Haha ! True, but it’s great to hear Misa’s playing on this song, because it’s far more subtly complex than what’s heard on the studio version.

Yeah, this is a real Banger!! The first time I heard this tune I wondered why in the HELL they never played this in their bigger concerts. Maybe they didn't want to start a MOSH Pit.....Lol! Bet I played this song at least ten times in a row when I first heard it. Love that down-up-down progression near the end ...effing epic!

But I love Metallica too so idc xD And for the "When I come back to band-maid" parts, it's the same here, when I'm exhausted on a long walk for the sake of my back and my feet hurts like hell (I have to choose between back or feet pains everyday because only a walk calm down my back when it start to be painful xD) or feeling bad mood, any BAND-MAID's song do the tricks to get better. You got love their early stuff, it what most of us started off with. Full of energy and the feeling of power. I've listened to their music hundreds of times and aways something new I didn't catch before they are that complex.
The style and the Band Maid sound is there. I can't believe they wouldn't have had success with this excellent New Beginning album. Not only Thrill but Shake That, Freezer, Don't apply the Brake are damn good hard rock songs.🤘
Awesome reaction. The guy who wrote "Thrill" wrote this song too. Band-Maid were very lucky to have some great songwriters working with them before they branched off on their own. A lot of bands would kill for that kind of help and direction.
great emotional reaction😂😂👍👍😎😎💖💖💖💖💖💖 when I drive long distances at night, if I feel sleepy, I shoot Shake That at full power, and I immediately gain 100 km of range, it's like the adrenaline in video games.
I think that because the tracks often end quickly without a pay off. I tend to feel track withdrawal and have to replay it again. I find that just listening to an album takes twice as long with Band Maid.
This is one of those songs I keep coming back to. You can tell on this track, much as later songs like "I can't live without you" that they've pushed the amp to it's limit in some little isolation booth, creating this sort of punchiness that can be felt every time Kanami touches a string. I hear some guys talk about using a Rat pedal to help recreate that punch. Love it. 👍
I was driving my parents around a few months back, doing various errands. Of course Band-Maid was blasting on the car stereo (my car, I decide the music 😉) . My mom (74) loved this song when she heard it.
This is one of the earlier videos I saw of BM back when I first followed. Shake That made me realize I had to see them live. ua-cam.com/video/IsFkh-5s6W8/v-deo.html (4 minute mark) The bass! The drums! Saiki's voice! They were so good even back then.
Fark, here goes some more money on speeding fines 😂 Listening to these Rock Goddesses is like getting punched by Mike Tyson then having Mother Teresa put the bandages, crying like you've run out of beer ( yep just did Ryan and Gary) then having your rock and roll soul fly like you're a trapeze artist - and that's usually all in one song, thanks Ryan, right time for a rum (beers finished) and more Band Maid Po 🎤🎸🥁🎼🥃
New Beginning is such an underrated album (from what I've seen from reactions). Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite songs of theirs. It showcases from an early point in the bands existence what they are capable of, even before they started writing their own songs (I believe).
They are constantly evolving musically and this is what sets the apart from the other Japanese bands or the vast majority of western bands. They are a massive breath of fresh air in a stagnant 3 chord rock n roll world which bores me to years. God Bless those girls for making me excited about rock music again,!
Always worth a revisit and reaffirms some of my life constants ie drumming is a blast, beer is proof that higher beings love us, Ryan M listening to BAND MAID is always worth the time 👍 thanks again Mate and to think since you did this you got to see these musical unicorns live and in person, Awesome, peace and love Po 👍🎼🥁🎸🎤🍻
Nice! this is one of my favorites, fantastic album. this was one of my early favs, after Real Existence. was a really good part of my hiking / daily walk playlist.
This kind of lesser known gem from them makes me think of the one downside to the upcoming American tour of theirs. They only are going to preform about two hours worth of their massive catalog of hits per show! They could play for four hours an still leave out some absolute bangers. Never enough Band-Maid.
If somebody grew up in the 80s and doesn't feel something nostalgic in the first four bars, they must have grown up Amish or in a commune or something. On the other hand, if you do have that immediate recognition but don't simultaneously realize that this has built upon and advanced what was being done in the 70s/80s/90s, you need to catch up or listen more closely or something. And I'm not dissing those older bands; if Band-Maid had been around back then they wouldn't have the foundation to do what they do now IMO. In the same way that Zeppelin took what went before and reinvented it, and then Rush and Iron Maiden took THAT and reinvented it, and then Tool took THAT and reinvented it (I'm leaving out a lot of in-between stuff there)...Band-Maid has taken all that and reinvented it and also made it once more easily accessible (i.e. catchy) instead of heading off into noodle-head extreme heaviness sheer-technicality-land. I'd say Polyphia has done the same but without going back as far with their influences.
Sure enough everyone has a specific genre of music they enjoy most but the bottom line is this band does not make any bad music and they never mail it in. Why is that so? Because l believe they pour their heart and soul into every single thing they do. And it shows. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.
I would be curious on how many hours of rehearsal goes into a song to get this tight of a performance.....they blow me away !!!!! Fuckin Band Maid....they never fail to impress me !!!!
When I started listening to BM my wife thought it was a fetish or something. Now she wears her Band Maid T shirts constantly. As do I. Sometimes someone at the Costco gives me a hell yeah.
@@RyanMear My wife makes ours because the ones I ordered from Amazon are probably on a Union Pacific track in LA. It’s been three months now. I’d gladly buy a Kanami shirt from you. Do you sell merch?

I , one of Japanese old man(65) , am again here and I want to point out one thing. Every song of Bandmaid is not Japanese traditional music style, so I was surprised when I first listen to this live video in Mexico. KANAMI respects SANTANA. I really understand her melodious guitar style .
Yes, the few times she plays anything blues like, it sounds so good! I would love a solo from Kanami that was a little slower with more bends.... she plays it so well!
They are getting a real Tool and Crimson vibe going. I would love for Robert Fripp to produce one of their records. They just keep evolving, a definite world class band.
@@Kissthetoad321 Ah yes, the inhale. I forgot about that! I love Unfair Game and I do not listen to it as much as it deserves. Parts of it remind me of Tool and NIN. (the swirly parts) I will listen tonight and raise a beer to you (and MISA).

Some songs take a while to grow on you, I've found that Shake That can hit you pretty fast, and there's still plenty to listen to. And I always look forward to the bridge, and Saiki high notes. And... and.... well, it's Band Maid
Ryan, I think 'Shake That' really means, please, shake your brain and shake your heart. BAND MAID always creates like 'medical songs', as they are like a group of rock doctors. Maybe 'Rocktors' is the right word and I use BAND MAID as a daily treatment. Here's why you feel and why I feel better. The daily dose is responsible of it as we All are rock addicts. Give me more...
Another one that half way through it's already possible to throw those major compliments about the way they approach each song... and THEN a little bit later on, they level it up a little more... you can only laugh about it... One interesting thing to do (and never saw it anywhere) is to pic a cover from Band-Maid and see how they level it up. If/when you have the time, please listen to MUCC's "ハニー" (Honey) ua-cam.com/video/lamaaLxPPT8/v-deo.html , which is a great song already, and listen to the same song covered by Band-Maid (the last one in "World Domination)... right off MISA and Akane making a huge difference...and Kanami, Kanami, Kanami...

oldies and goodies. Maids really ruin listening to standard rock. i get bored listening to many other bands noe
Gonna slightly disagree with one of you text points. I don't think Mincho strives to play differently. I think her mind just works differently. It isnt a conscious decision, it just IS who she is.
@@RyanMear hopefully we can debate this and other topics at a US show this summer. 😀 I think she is that rare eccentric genius who experiences the world different from most. You can see her change into a different person when it's time to get busy. It could be a combination of the two (intent and natural) because on the last two albums she has been experimenting with some odd note selections in a few of her solos. They aren't clunkers but they change the feel and direction mid solo. I'm not a theory guy but I think she is either changing modes or scales mid lick. It keeps you on your toes.
I go back and forth about this. Does she play a riff and then think to herself, "I could change that minor triad into a diminished and then add a sixth or minor seventh which would imply ..." or does it just come out of her because her mind works in weird ways? She started playing piano when she could barely talk, which means the language of music is so much a part of how she thinks; and she thinks like an non-conformist. Maybe she doesn't actually rationalize it but it just happens because she was a guitar in a prior life. "What? A tree?" she mumbles. I would love so much to sit in a corner and watch them develop a song. She plays something weird while the rest of the band looks at her with an ‽ floating in the air over their heads, and ... KANAMI: "What?" M-A-M-S: "What‽" KANAMI: "Is it bad? Should I change it?" M-A-M-S: "NO! NO! NO! NO! DO IT AGAIN!!"
I watched this the moment it came out, but I forgot to give it a comment! As always, your reactions are my favorite. You said you have already listened to Beauty and the Beast?

In interviews they talk about how much they learned from and appreciate the writers they worked with.
I'm really surprised this song is the least listened to of that album, it's the most like their latest stuff... er later stuff World Domination.
great emotional reaction😂😂👍👍😎😎💖💖💖💖💖💖
when I drive long distances at night, if I feel sleepy, I shoot Shake That at full power, and I immediately gain 100 km of range, it's like the adrenaline in video games.
I think that because the tracks often end quickly without a pay off. I tend to feel track withdrawal and have to replay it again. I find that just listening to an album takes twice as long with Band Maid.
It's all by design! LOL
Kanami is the riff master general and saki vocals on point and misa, kanami an miku.......what's left to be said
Great as usual
It's Pure Rock and Roll. Feel like destroy everything.
Another great song, as many from them.
This song is so great. It's even got a proper drum solo in it!
There is no age to love Band Maid. Your mom has good taste in rock music.😁🤘
They are such light to me that other bands are their mere shadows. (paraphrase of Wendell Berry).
What comes to mind when I hear this song....bad ass!! 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂
Great singing, instrumentals and just overall sounds
This is one of the earlier videos I saw of BM back when I first followed. Shake That made me realize I had to see them live.
ua-cam.com/video/IsFkh-5s6W8/v-deo.html (4 minute mark)
The bass! The drums! Saiki's voice! They were so good even back then.
Shake That is one of my favorites. May actually be my favorite BM song that doesn't have a video.
4:38 Uh oh. Ryan goofing off and broke the first commandment of BAND-MAID: Thou shall remain silent during the testimony of Kanami. 🤐
Yeah, whoops!
Listening to BAND-MAID causes your🧠to squeeze out happy😁endorphins🐬.
LOL
Yeah even their early stuff shines with the Band-Maid flavour. Well, everything except "Evergreen".
Thanks, Bruno!!
They have just played it live in Osaka last fridayOctoçber, 20th.
Nice! this is one of my favorites, fantastic album. this was one of my early favs, after Real Existence. was a really good part of my hiking / daily walk playlist.
This kind of lesser known gem from them makes me think of the one downside to the upcoming American tour of theirs. They only are going to preform about two hours worth of their massive catalog of hits per show! They could play for four hours an still leave out some absolute bangers. Never enough Band-Maid.
They can do something like ''band-maid week'' playing different set each day.
@@lurkmerchant for any other band crazy idea; but for them it could work; I'd buy a ticket each day.
Ryan you should've done P in D's awesome photo collage vid of "Shake That". Just saying.🤷♂️
Every song has so many twist and turns, hooks and riffs that other bands only could dream of.
Told you ,I told ,I told you nobody dose it like band maid because they are the living legends known as band maid beauty and the beast hopefully
............😏
When I started listening to BM my wife thought it was a fetish or something. Now she wears her Band Maid T shirts constantly. As do I. Sometimes someone at the Costco gives me a hell yeah.
You can see there are more female reactors reacting to bandmaid and getting into them. Especially younger ones.
Yes, and I'm happy about that!
I haven't yet got any recognition from any fellow BAND-MAID people here when wearing my shirts.... some day!
@@RyanMear My wife makes ours because the ones I ordered from Amazon are probably on a Union Pacific track in LA. It’s been three months now. I’d gladly buy a Kanami shirt from you. Do you sell merch?
ryan-mear-reacts.creator-spring.com
Freezer is my favorite from that album
I also want to mention that I like the music fade-out at the end... you should do that all the time.
That tune just full on smacks ya upside the head. Nobody rocks like the Maids. A lot of good Japanese bands out there but the Maids are a cut above. Love those Maids!
Evan just a good song has one part that makes me go ''Yeeessss!!!'' That's what they do every time.
Kentaro Akutsu wrote the lyrics and music for the songs "SHAKE THAT" and "THRILL". He used to be active in the brother-sister duo "ZERO" and is now a music creator. It can be said that his song clearly indicated the direction of BAND MAID's subsequent music.

This Ladies are dangerous.it is running in my car every day together with Matchless Gum. I really have to watch the speed then. 😂😂😂
Nice shirt!
One of my favorites from their earlier days. You missed Saiki's "oof" at the beginning. (best part)
It also reminds me of his little muffled cry of fear in the intro of Unfair game. I love that.
@@Kissthetoad321 Ah yes, the inhale. I forgot about that! I love Unfair Game and I do not listen to it as much as it deserves. Parts of it remind me of Tool and NIN. (the swirly parts) I will listen tonight and raise a beer to you (and MISA).
@@cygnetseven Oh thank you. I would like to do the same but I don't have beer available. I run to buy some. Besides, I also like Miku's screams in Why, Why, Why.🍺😁🤘
This song is dangerous when you sit in your car... Like, speed limits? What's that?? 😆I can't understand that my car speakers are still alive. This song needs to be listen on loud volume! Really LOUD!!
“Band Maid doing Band Maid things” _Chase Carnison
There aren’t many bands on Earth that can do what they do.
Some songs take a while to grow on you, I've found that Shake That can hit you pretty fast, and there's still plenty to listen to. And I always look forward to the bridge, and Saiki high notes. And... and.... well, it's Band Maid
Yes... they're is always "and".... always more!
Finally, I really like Shake That a lot. I'm an old rocker.
What more could u ask for
Misa has the best bass tones i've ever heard...
💯
I feel you 😁
Gonna slightly disagree with one of you text points. I don't think Mincho strives to play differently. I think her mind just works differently. It isnt a conscious decision, it just IS who she is.
You don't get that way without the desire to defy convention
@@RyanMear hopefully we can debate this and other topics at a US show this summer. 😀 I think she is that rare eccentric genius who experiences the world different from most. You can see her change into a different person when it's time to get busy. It could be a combination of the two (intent and natural) because on the last two albums she has been experimenting with some odd note selections in a few of her solos. They aren't clunkers but they change the feel and direction mid solo. I'm not a theory guy but I think she is either changing modes or scales mid lick. It keeps you on your toes.
She definitely switches it up!
KANAMI: "What?"
M-A-M-S: "What‽"
KANAMI: "Is it bad? Should I change it?"
M-A-M-S: "NO! NO! NO! NO! DO IT AGAIN!!"
I watched this the moment it came out, but I forgot to give it a comment! As always, your reactions are my favorite. You said you have already listened to Beauty and the Beast?
Yep..... it's in the bank...
@@RyanMear nice! I bet that live clip gave you some motivation.
It's a shame this track wasn't given It's own MV. It's better than Thrill. Even though it's written by the same guy.
Because of this song, I started to include sprinting (preferably uphill) as part of my jogging routine. I couldn’t listen to this song and not sprint.
