Self-hosting web services and software ensures only you have access to your data and full control over it. Let me show you my favorite self-hosted apps right now for the single-board computer Raspberry Pi! In the video I'll introduce Wallabag, a read-it-later archiving service for web articles, basically a private alternative to Pocket and Instapaper. There is also FreshRSS, my favorite RSS reader. And you'll get to know Bitwarden, an open-source password manager, that made an appearance in one of my earlier videos already. Nextcloud is a full-featured private cloud solution with the power to edit documents, share calendars, host contacts and much more. Of course I also included Pi-hole, the DNS network filter is the reason, many people bought a Raspberry Pi.

Nice selection, lacking a backup solution - can you please tell what you use with your Pi ?
Nextcloud is just amazing. If you know what you do go for a clean setup and build everything on own and if not there’s some alternatives like snap installation or nextcloudpi. When you get it run it works just fine.
imho selfhosting the cloud and the Password manager is the most important thing.
Things like RSS, pihole and etc. are really nice to have but a cloud service and a password manager are must have.
I disagree... piHoli is a much higher security feautre, than expexted... i guess, it depends on the home network, but when you have consoles and tvs and mobile devices - pihole is woking for all of them too - without any extension. But that doesnt mean, that the other things are not important! I'm using a resiliosync as a cloud and dont use any passwort managers at all, bcs i dont need them (make cryptic passwds on my own with my selfmade algorithm xD and getting results of +20 chars)
@@T3Cabon I hope you will answer my question, can Pi-Hole or other self hosted open source softwares like Bitwarden and Nextcloud work when travelling abroad? If so, where and how should I host it for example VPS, Rasbery Pi or Docker?
Briar is my favoruite way to read rss feeds. Some messaging apps should copy it because it's a great idea in my opinion to have an rss feed in your preferred messaging app.

For a long time I used Cloudflare and Caddy with subdomains to reverse proxy my various self-hosted services, but it's as you say. Most of the time I access my services at home. Services like Syncthing only need access for management and just putt along happily wherever you are otherwise. Nextcloud is more of a pickle, but I almost never need it on a device I don't own. I recently found Tailscale which seems like a nice middle ground between convenience and security. It's not self-hosted, but if that doesn't bother you it's worth a look. Free for 20 devices and essentially creates a mesh network of devices wherever they may be and gives them each a static "public" IP. Only devices in the mesh can connect with that IP. SSL, custom DNS and 2FA are easy to setup too. No affiliation btw, just a fan.
You say VPN better than portforwarding. What you show regarding Bitwarden is my problem. You use it within your network via https... But to get a certificate from letsencrypt you need to make it reachable from outside via a domain. Otherwise you need to use a self signed certificate. It is quite complitated and the point where I stopped the project....
Very good video! I suspect many of these could run simultaneously on Docker.

The " i have nothing to hide" attitude in my normie surroundings is hard to argue without becoming their IT-Guy when something breaks or is to "inconvenient". For friction-less conversion Brave + UBlock Origin (Chrome), Bitwarden (Lastpass), LibreOffice and if possible a Pihole....The Standard Family and Friends package, plus they are all on Signal now. I take care of my own Network, but I need a solution for my mother and her friends... this is a good start..
If you decide to self host e-mail I can recommend Mailcow.
KeePassXC is the best version of KeePass. It has a great design and you can even activate browser extensions. Also you can use your password database from your cloud (dropbox, onedrive, google drive and even nextcloud)

I'd love to see you revisit all the "run on an RPi" applications you have covered in the past but this time include a comparison matrix. The columns would be something like:
Name, Purpose, Docker rating (0 being did not [currently] run in Docker, 10 being no performance loss running in Docker), % of RPi 4 consumed under normal load, % of RPi 3 consumed under normal load, % of RPi Zero W consumed under normal load.
Would be great for those of us realizing we need to get these spying corporations of our life!

i can give you my docker settings for setting up:
docker run -d --name bitwarden -e -v /bw-data/:/data/ -p 84:80 --restart=unless-stopped bitwardenrs/server:raspberry
you can copy and paste into terminal and you can reach the web interface over: your ip-adress of your Pi and port 84 (for example: 192.168.178.44:84)
Edit: for Pi 3 and Pi 4
By the way you can make it accessible from outside of your network. Of course there’s always the risk someone tries to get on your server or break it down but these programs are mostly really well made and highly secured.
On top of that you can install some stuff to stop these kind of attacks like fail2ban or loop generator (if I’m not mistaking about it’s name).

Yes it works! I would recommend to use docker. So with docker you can run nearly unlimited programs at the same time
@@nicok.9371 "docker can run nearly unlimited programs at the same time" .... bold statement ! ...2 or 15 container (!=programs) , ok! ...but "nearly unlimited", why would you say that. That is just plain stupid, or simply explain to how. Get your pihole running and that is a win in my book. Most people here a not cs students and will not configure their multi docker setup from a UA-cam comment
@@nictou I would say it depends on your system. In theory it is possible.... Of course you aren't going to try running hundreds of containers at the same time. It's not very useful in practice but still possible.
Of course, most of the people aren't computer science students. Me neither but if you are interested in running a raspberryPi with pihole, nextcloud and so on, I think it's very useful to know that there is a tool which makes it possible to use multiple WebUi based Programs at the same time on the same system. No one needs to set up a gigantic Docker container mess or a RPi cluster but I think giving someone a hint for his/her setup is something productive. The person is getting in touch with Docker and can decide if he/she wants to use it.
That was my main purpose of the comment: just to help @Fadi Nather, giving him a hint for his own project.

@@JuankM1050 yes, i know. So since they are so similar, what are differences? I am not finding that info. I use Debian, and don't want to learn too much new stuff (I have a long list of things to learn already).
I ran a nextcloud instance for about two years. It's absolutely unstable. It had constantly problems. Corrupted files and here and their a corrupted database. The database was running on another machine. Other DBs on the same server instance had no problems. The only thing I enabled in nextcloud was LDAP support. Files where stored directly on a well backed up NAS via iSCSI. The same here no problems with other Services using the same setup. By the end of last year I returned to Dropbox.
I can't even imagine how unstable it would become on a raspberry pi with a SD card, which trends to fail.

If you want to get rid of Google, Microsoft... you should
switch your OS, for mobile /e/OS or graphite and for desktop any kind of linux, presumably not Ubuntu or derivative of it
delete Instagram, Google Facebook... accounts
switch your search engine
switch your proprietary apps to FOSS(WhatsApp to Signal)
But you still have a google account
even better than signal: host your own matrix/synapse instance
I think in the coming years this will be more like a TODO plan for even growing number of ppl who are already on hook of GAMAM :)

Sorry to break 💔 it to you guys, I wouldn't trust my raspberry to store my important data, if sd card broken I lost everything. That's why I run my nexcloud iñstances on top of Hp proliant server with RAID10 setup, CentOS 7 and power redundancy. So if my disk fail, I just swap them out without data loss, and I trust my HP server for next 10years. Raspberry is cool but it doesn't feels right to store your data.
That's my 2cent.

@@NYProductions when I talk about Nextcloud it is about all the environment and hardware that support them. Raspberry pi is a toy, even when you plug external HDD there's still probability to be fail, when you setup a real server hardware, it comes with dedicated controller to set RAID10, when disk 📀 q fail, you just swap them, without touching any software inside, when power supply fail, you just swap them out too, running on CentOS with support for 10yrs, supported HDD up to 7TB/slots. I think raspberry can't handle that. We move out from google to replace them, not to downgraded. Going from google / Dropbox to nextcloud raspbian OS is not worth your time. It'll fail at some point.

@@NYProductions also, it can stream videos for 10+ client devices at home without buffering because there's 2 Uplink LAN 10G module on the server. We use it for video production+photostudio, 100mbs transfer speed faster than copying from usb to external HDD, not to mention we edit 10GB Adobe premiere file directly from multiple computer. Also we set our sony a6400 to automatically transfer to server without needing any data cable, it is so efficient ❤️. Your raspberry pi can't handle that. Thanks nextcloud,🙏

You are not hosting on a PI specifically. You are using Docker. That bit of information would have informed me to skip your video.
Well he is actually self hosting his apps on Pi. Docker is just a nice containerish way for managing then and running in a bit of isolation one from the other. I don't see how this contradicts.

I'm schocked that someone still prefers news from social networking websites, than directly from the sources, specifically chosen from each person's taste. RSS is still a fantastic way to see news from tech subjects, health information, among others.
What do you think it's better than RSS these days?
@@luisnabais I remember using RSS more than a decade ago, I had so many problems with corrupted feed that I give up. I honestly thought that it was obsolete these days.

I was stoked when I finally decided to pihole but after 20 minutes I had to uninstall it. Everything takes 20 seconds to resolve even though the DNS server (the pi) is literally 1 foot away from me vs. instantaneous with OpenDNS servers thousands of miles away from me. It's mind boggling. And this slowdown across the whole home network just to get ad-free mobile UA-cam is simply not worth it.
Interesting that you had that result. I was using a Pi W and had no such slowdown. Yep, even wirelessly.

Best way I found to learn pronunciation is to learn about the IPA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet
Than google phonetics of the language you wont to pronounce and it becomes quite simple with the IPA as a reference.
just saying it's pronunciation anyone can make mistakes but there is always a room for improvement.
