I totally agree. I used to,watch him on EWTN without giving him much importance. But as time went on, I began to realize what a truly great thinker and devout man of God he was. And just as I began to appreciate his greatness, I got the news that he had passed from this life to his reward. Surely there must be a cause for his beatification and canonization!
I am a former Episcopalian of the Anglo Catholic persuasion and a Hermit. I am now happily a Catholic! I read my way into the Church by reading the Fathers of the Church. The Truth always speaks! Repent, and believe the Good News!
Every Catholic and Protestant needs to listen to this video, and that not only includes all of the laypeople, but also the Pope, the clergy, and all of the ministers of every Christian faith. Fr Groeshel speaks out of absolute love and knowledge, while not holding back any punches where they are deserved. It will be the best hour and sixteen minutes that you will have used up in a long time.
Thank you Lord for giving us a man like Father. He teaches volumes in a short and simple and orderly manner. Keeping your feet on the ground but, looking forward to the eternal. Can’t wait to meet him one day.
FATHER IS AT REST NOW. MAY HIS WORDS FROM GOD ROUSE MY HEART AND ALL HEARTS TO FORSAKE FALSE RELIGIOSITY AND CLING TO THE ONLY THING THAT IS VITAL FOR A HUMAN HEART (GOD) ALONE !!!
I just miss Fr. Groeschel ..... I learned much about the spiritual life from watching his shows on EWTN in the late 90s when I was going into my 20s. Sometimes when I pray I remember him.
Thank you for your videos. I am a convert of 20 years and am still learning, I watch EWTN. The videos here are Great because many I have not seen. Thank You very much!
I have never learned so much as I have here, especially the history of the church. I love listening to the videos on this network's programs. Thank you!
he was brilliant, fun and forthright about the reality of our time. a scholar that will be missed and thankfully he left a legacy behind. may he rest in peace.
Saint,” I think” Benedict Groeshel is the man for our times. He’s saying everything, I understand, and believe. Fr. Benedict, pray for our Pope, Francis,. He’s the man you’re talking about . Pray for him. 🙏🙏🙏
This call for reformation is a surprisingly strong message from Fr Groeschel. I like the message that the Catholic Church needs to reform to the challenges of today. The Catholic Church need to reach out by supporting EWTN and setting up an approachable website. In these ways, much can be done
Hello, I know that I am viewing this years after your comment, I am doing some college research about the human spirit and recalled father Leo Clifford's videos and stumbled upon your comments. I am a revert 20 years and absolutely love the catholic church, the reason I was intrigued with this discussion is because I am at peace with other traditions because I believe it takes "grace" to see the catholic church for what it really is. That being said what keeps me catholic is how despite all the failures that the men and women who make up the catholic church have I also see how "Divine Providence" guides it along especially in faith and moral teaching. There is no place on earth that can have "broken people" speak so divinely. Father Groeshel is brilliant and has brought peace into my knowledge about many things, RIP!
Father Groeschel also recites the most beautiful version of the Holy Rosary I've ever heard. Before each Mystery decade, he explains what they entail. See for yourself and listen, for example, Father Groeschel praying any Mystery of the Rosary and be aware of his love for our Blessed Mother. ❤❤
A pastor I once was under said that real revival (renewal) exhibits itself in true repentance. That repentance includes resolving/restoring relationships, and restitution for any ill gotten gains (to the one harmed, or to Jesus.
You have to love Fr. Groeschel. I met him once in California at a retreat house. He was very small. Maybe 5'1". He looked like a tiny figurine from the Canterbury tales.
Fr. Groeschel is a very insightful teacher, I learned many things from his lecture. The only observation I would like to make is the fact that he says that Jesus never commanded his apostles to write the New Testament when Jesus did it at least nine times in the book of Revelation. Jesus explicitly commanded the Apostle John to write letters to the seven churches in Asia and by extension to the Universal Church. I have heard several people making the same claim: "Jesus never commanded his apostles to write anything", the New Testament was not the idea of the apostles but the purpose of God. Overall I like his fervor and desire for reform in the Church. God bless you Fr. Groeschel.
I would like to make a suggestion. Correct me if I am wrong, but you mentioned that the Book of Revelation had the commandment where Jesus commanded John to write to the seven Churches. Okay, I understand that. But it's interesting because Revelation was written towards the end of the first century. By that point, most of the books that comprise the New Testament portion of the Sacred Scriptures had already been written. This commandment from Christ came to John towards the culmination of the first century of Christianity. It would make sense to assume that none of the other apostles got that message, seeing as all of them would have been martyred by that point in time. My understanding of the statement, 'Christ never commanded his disciples to record his life or teachings in writing' is in the context of Our Lord's public ministry. In that context he never mentioned the need to write down any of what he had done and said while he was with them. The commandment Christ gave to John, the author of Revelation was in an entirely different context. By this point, the various books that would later comprise the New Testament had already been written. That's my take on the matter. Blessings! 😀🙏🏽
I understand what you are saying, but still, he did say "Jesus never commanded" his Apostles to write anything (Minute 56:30-45 of the video). And if I recall well It was Jesus who "commanded His Apostle John" to WRITE. The written Word is inspired by God the Holy Spirit and therefore we should have it in the highest estimation. I have heard priests, bishops, archbishops , and catholic apologist using the same argument to defend "sacred tradition" which by the way nobody knows what that is till a dogma is infallibly defined. It is the Wholly Writ what God has given us as the only Word of God not any sacred tradition.
I would say that Fr. Groeschell meant it as 'In Life, Christ never commanded his disciples to write anything'. Once Jesus was resurrected and glorified with the Father in Heaven is an entire different issue.
So, Fr. Groeschell's words, at least my take on them, shouldn't be taken in an inclusive sense but an exclusive sense, even if Fr. Groeschell wasn't specific in his explanation.
EPIC-MAN 3290's I understand what you are saying, but still, he did say "Jesus never commanded" his Apostles to write anything (Minute 56:30-45 of the video). How should we understand Fr. Groeschel's statement in 56:30-45 in light of Jesus' words in Revelation 1:11, 1:19, 2:1, 2:8, 2:12, 2:18, 3:1, 3:7, 3:14, 14:13, 19:9, 21:5, ? In every instance we see Jesus our Lord telling his Apostle to write down. Jesus left us His Word and not something else! Blessings!
Thomas Marabella The bottom line is that the Bible is the Word of God and nothing else. If somebody comes with new dogmas and stuff I think we should use the Bible as our rule to either accept or reject those. Thank you!
Well, last time I checked my Bible, Jesus only used one authority to correct error and to expose the danger of man made traditions: The Scriptures, Jesus always refuted the theological errors of His time by saying: "It is written", "it is written", etc. You know the idea of an "Unwritten Sacred Tradition" is very convenient but it was not invented by the catholic church but by the ancient Israelites. The difference is that the Jews eventually wrote it down, it's what we know as the "Talmud".
***** I think you are just putting together what the Catholic Answers' apologists say all the time. It's not the writer but the Word of God that has the power and authority to save. 2 Peter 1:20 deals with a different issue (divine origin not human origin), not with the fact we can interpret Scripture by ourselves. In my statement above I just pointed out that Jesus did command the Apostle John to WRITE...
Absolutely love Fr. Groeschel, but I'm confused on his statement about John Calvin taking a step back toward Catholicism and teaching that someone could lose their salvation. I've never heard of this, and no Calvinist I know believes this. Did Father Groeschel intend to say that Jonathan Edwards taught this? And that in doing so he brought Calvinism one step back to the Catholic Church?
'be careful it is not too traditional' Fr B says regarding reform! it is because we left Tradition that the Church is in the mess Fr B was condemning! he then says he does not question the sincerity of Luther, the prince of heretics whose words on the Holy Mass are so disgusting they cannot be repeated..an enemy of Christ's Church but Fr B did not doubt his sincerity? Dont believe that part of this talk if you dont want God as an enemy, only One Apostle failed, JUDAS, the son of perdition!
Fr. B was surely talking about the times the apostles failed Jesus. Their lack of faith, sleeping at Gethsemane, Peter denying Jesus and generally misunderstanding his mission until Pentecost.
It's a methodological mistake to mix up real ''protestantism'' (Luther and Calvin and STOP), which is an emphasis on the Gospel (the ''Evangelion'', το Ευαγγέλιο) inside the catholic orthodox church, with other ''protestantisms'' (anabaptists, baptists, wesleyans etc etc) which are non-monergists, non-sacramentalist churches, which are in a kind of heresy. Yes, the Anabaptists and etc. were more radical in their departure from Catholicism and yes, the magisterial reformers conceived of themselves as you describe. On the other hand, by 1521 Luther was rejecting nearly the entire Catholic system and all one has to do is read Calivin's Institutes to see that he had done the same. But your point is well-taken: they did not "think of themselves as something completely alien to the Catholicity."

Luther and Calvin, as Hilaire Belloc teaches in his book ''The great heresies'', thought of themselves as Catholics, not as ''NEO-protestants'' today think of themselves as something completely alien to the Catholicity.
