      As a Canadian...I have no idea what he's talking about. The only time you don't have a shower and toilet in the bathroom together is if it's some huge ensuite bathroom with a little toilet "closet". Or if it's just a half bathroom/powder room and just has a toilet and sink.

      Don't think I've ever seen the toilet NOT be in the same room as the shower. Think that's the most common by far in western countries at least.

    The toilet in the bathroom is a common feature in British homes as well.
    Encouraging people to seek out and rent Kyo machiya sounds like a good way of ensuring the buildings' survival.

    My "dream" bathroom is a wet room that is including the toilet so that Everything including the walls, floor and ceiling , can be hosed down and disinfected with a power washer , steamer , or even disinfecting cleaners , without having to get down on your knees to be scrubbing behind, in-between , or in the nooks and crannies of things.

    • @brandobond
      @brandobond 3 роки тому +2

      Ha ha. I used to live in Japan and my bathroom was completely plastic. The walls, ceiling, floor, tub, toilet, sink were all connected to each other (aside from a few seams). There was a drain in the middle of the floor. Cleaning it was amazing since I just sprayed a cleaner over everything, waited a couple minutes, than used the shower wand to rinse everything off.

    About the prices: it depends if you wNt to live in a shared house or in an apartment, at the beginning you have to pay for fire insurance, the contract and a first month in advance, some places also ask for “gift money” but not all places do this
    In my situation, i live in a share house, i paid 10k yen for the contract (wich had a discount because of corona a lot of people moved out of japan)
    And i pay 66k yen per month, that includes internet, and other fees.
    I used to live in a better sharehouse wich only asked for 55k yen but it closed because of corona.

    Very interesting video! I'm American, so as you imagine, I was definitely surprised by some of the things here (like the one kitchen not including a stove!). Love the scenery!

    • @brandobond
      @brandobond 3 роки тому +3

      Did you notice the stove that was included doesn't have the oven part? Most places only have a few burners plus a small chamber with a broiler (I was told that Japanese people usually broil fish with it but I made toast). The ovens I saw in Japan were combination microwave/toaster ovens and thus, much smaller than a Western oven.

    2:50 I'm not a fan either. Honestly that set-up just reminds me of hotel rooms. If it's just me, I don't really mind. But when you're living with other people, it's nice to have a bit more "privacy". Well, privacy probably isn't the right word, but you know what I mean... Like, people will knock on the bathroom door if they're in a hurry, like "I need to brush my teeth before going to work" or whatever. But they won't disturb you if you're in the toilet room.
    Personally, I'd go for 1 or 3. I don't like the second one just because of how close the neighbor's windows are. I really hate that. Of course, the machiya has the same thing, but it also has that courtyard inside so I guess that kind of makes up for it.
    Anyway, good luck with your apartment hunting, Dave!
