  • Track 3 off the fan-80s-tastic J-Pop/J-Funk-soundtrack to probably one of the greatest and one of the most obscure one-shot-OVAs ever made: "California Crisis", a highspeed car chase-sci fi-slice of life-action-drama-comedy set in 1980s California (as seen by crazy Japanese folk), drawn in a very 60s-Action Comics-kinda way with rich contrasts, awesome animation and the first instance of someone taking out a helicopter with a fucking car, two whole decades before "Die Hard 4" did it.
    It was quite a bitch to get the OVA as well as this soundtrack - but it was totally worth it, you guys!

    I've heard about this anime. It was supposed to have a shoot out between Soviet KGB disguised as USAF Personnel and pursuing USAF personnel throughout Southern California over some kind of alien thing. There was supposed to be a second OVA, but the first one apparently bombed and the private company was unable to secure enough financing to create the second OVA.
    More to the point, I'm originally from the areas where all the shooting was happening.
    I can tell ya know, they should have read the map better when they were planning the anime. They put all the locations unrealistically close together. More to the point, the Military Posts in Southern California were largely manned by combat units, with a few others being training bases with just a couple of RnD Bases, Edwards, Vanderbilt, China Lake being the three top names.
    Otherwise, it would be more believable if the US Marines were running around. More to the point, SoCal, in the 1980s, could have been described as one of the largest Military Complexes in the world. There were two major Naval Ports, several major Airbases, a number of military supply bases, training bases such as Twenty-Nine Palms and Fort Irwin, that massive base USMC Camp Pendleton, I recall some facilities over in the city of Oceanside that supported both the Marines and Navy.
    At least they stored stuff there. I grew up there in the late 80s and early 90s. Hell I was BORN in the area. So I grew up around the major posts, I even caught the last air show at MCAS El Toro before the base was BRACed, which was sad, as it was hosted one of the largest air shows in Southern California.
    Man, I even got away from base security once as a child. Still can get away from folks the moment they turn their eyes off me. And it can take them time to find me. Drove a whole company of security personnel batty trying to find me in a hangar once.
    Or so my mother used to say a lot. Especially as I did it to her and my siblings enough times, they backed her up on it!
    But, man, El Toro was the place to be for an air show. My mother worked at Marine Camp Pendleton and I grew up around Marines, so I learned a bit.

      I mean, in my experience with anime that takes place in the US, the writers don't seem to clock how big and how much dead space the US has in it in general. I guess what I'm saying is that's hardly an issue isolated to this OVA.

      I can empathize with your remark about base closure. I lived on March with my family literally as the BRAC process there was beginning. Sad but unforgettable times. This film and the vaporwave genre tickle at my memories of that era.

    This song is SO catchy to me. Everytime I listen to it, I get the sudden urge to watch _Jem_ . In fact, Japanese language withstanding, I can easily envision this song being on an episode, if not being an edited-down theme song. While _California Crisis_ , in my humble opinion, left a lot to be desired, one thing it did fantastically is its soundtrack. Thanks for posting!

    • @Loader2K1
      @Loader2K1 9 років тому +6

      @Amy: Indeed. I think it might have helped somewhat if _California Crisis_ was a manga series first, and THEN got an OVA episode or two to help it get off the ground. To be fair, it was pretty enjoyable for the time allotted. I just wish it didn't end with the anticlimactic cliffhanger ending that it had.
