    I may be biased as an irishman but I really enjoyed the mens' 800/1500, I think the battle between Finke, Wiffen, Hafnaoui, and Paltrinieri will be a premier event at the Olympics this summer. Daniel's been on a tear lately, breaking Grant Hackett's SCM 800 record that stood since 2001. Winning by the margin he did in the 1500 at worlds was exciting to watch.

      They were great, it's sad how partisan americans are, only interested if they're competing. I think Daniel will break the WR in 1500, soon. He's on the up, and already very close.

      The 1500m Sun Yang WR is one of the longest standing on the books and we might see any one of those guys take it down...definitely a premier event!

      Seamus, I'm the same. From NI, so biased.
      Daniel Wiffen's swims were incredible. He demolished a quality field in both the 800 & 1,500
      To also break, the great Grant Hackett's record, is some feet.
      I love Cody, but as you say, if it was Bobby Fink, for example, he would've talked about it & how incredible swims they were

    Portuguese here. Really enjoyed the men's 800m/1500m, the 800m started with 2 guys (who end up 2nd and 3rd) in a battling to see who goes out faster, then closing up, Wiffen comes flying, and Paltrinieri loses the silver by 0.03, which was pretty impressive to see. The 1500m were also nice to see because Wiffen just put up an amazing performance and ending up making the 5th best time ever in the world.
    And I might be biased but Diogo Ribeiro starting the 50m butterfly final in the worst manner possible and still winning, beating guys like McEvoy and Michael Andrew, and then also winning the 100m butterfly, was also something big, not just for Portugal but for the swimming world, as he is only 19.
    I was surprised with the best men's award tho, I think Pan winning 5 gold medals and breaking a WR at this time of the year is just crazy and he should've won

    • @AidanHolland
      @AidanHolland 3 місяці тому +2

      Totally agree with this. Wiffen actually said pan should have won the award on the swimswam podcast due to the wr.

    9 years ago when Ning Zetao first won the 100 free world champ for us. We always thought the sprint events are impossible for Asians. Now we have Pan Zhanle breaking the WR. It's been a long way. (A great Chinese New Year gift by the way). The truth is
    1. Pan himself predicted that. He's not coming out of nowhere. He's prepared.
    2. This by no means a guaranteed success. Anything is possible for the Olympics.
    3. I really hope we can win the men's medley relay in Paris. China really got a shot by now. We got 3 world champs & 2 WR holders. It's a pitty we don't have a butterflyer (Also Xu Jiayu has passed his prime. He has some off-pool affairs as well. I don't know how well he can get)

      I wouldn't necessarily say no butterflier. Wang Changhao went a 50.6 split at Asian Games which is not bad. I have a feeling that by the time trials come along in April this so called weak leg may not be so weak anymore.

    I disagree with you about the distance events. Wiffen was 3 seconds off the 1500 wr. Throughout the whole race he was hovering between being .3 off wr pace and .9. Up until the last 50 it looked like the wr could've been broken. This meet got Wiffens name out their more. Now we see that he has a chance to compete with Finke and Hafnoui to win gold in one of those events or even both.

Sure, the times might not have been as competitive than previous international comps for the podium without Ledecky and McIntosh, but it’s been an insane and hopeful campaign for the future of little ol’ Swimming NZ. I watched every session of the Doha WCs (and since I’m not American, I won’t be watching the ongoing SEC/ACC meets, or the NCAA championships next month; I just don’t care about any of those results). While some of the races felt a bit slower than the past couple of WCs, most of the 50s were very respectable. For example, it was nice to see a sub-24 podium in the women’s 50 free (the last time it happened was in 2017). Overall, the men’s 50 breast podium was also faster than the last couple of years.
    Top 5 swims:
    1. Pan Zhanle (100 free WR, obviously)
    2. Kate Douglass (200 IM; the fastest winning time at a WC since prime Hosszu)
    3. Sarah Sjostrom (50 fly; nice to see her get somewhat close to her legendary 24.43 again)
    4. Marrit Steenbergen (100 free; it was only .10 slower than the winning time from 2023, and it makes her a legitimate gold medal contender for Paris)
    5. Tess Schouten (200 breaststroke; she joins the mix of gold medal contenders for Paris, especially if Chikunova can’t participate)
    I feel like Claire Curzan, despite being the “best female” of the meet, wasn’t *that* impressive. None of her backstroke times would have won last year (her 200 back time would’ve gotten bronze), and her fly time (56.6) is still .4 slower than her PB from 2021. I have a hard time seeing her make the Olympic team this year, so I suppose it’s good that she took advantage of a weakened field to win some medals and cash.

    This year i took a course to get a certification to be a swim coach in my Country and in this course we also talked about why the 50s aren‘t in the olympics and it‘s because each Sport has a Maximum amount of medals they can give out and swimming has so many events that the IOC doesn‘t allow it even though they always try to argue how it‘s necessary that we also have these events. That why in other Sports different weight categories get combined which is also Not fun for them… 😢

    Distance swimming all the way. Much more training/work involved. The strategy used in the race is fascinating. The stroke 50's? A horse race. Someone wins the 50 for decades? Yawn. One woman has longer finger nails and she wins the race (b/c everyone in the heat was w/in 4 hundredths of each other). Ledecky dominating so long? Spectacular. Ashley Twichell, always underrated, being the oldest person to make a first Olympic team - in the open water event? OMG. She did her best time in the 1500 when she was over THIRTY years old (and she was no slouch before that). Had a baby and made the National Team this year. It's the grind and discipline it takes to be that tough physically and mentally for so long that will always win for me.

    Kinda surprised by the picks, there's quite a few swimmers who announced themselves in Doha and may contend for medals at the Olympics that I feel like deserve a bit more credit. Tang in the 1breast, schouton in the 2breast, kohler in the 1fly, steenbergen in the 1free, williamson in the 50 breast, Dong in the 2breast, Woomin in the 4free, Wiffen in distance free, and of course Pan and the WR in the 1free.

    I'd love to see 50s stroke added (and 200m relays). I feel like they haven't, because the other olympic sports say there's already too many swimming events. Like you'd never have a Phelps-like, 8 medal year for a track and field athlete, because they don't have strokes. Maybe that's part of the obstacle of adding more swim events?

    • @_R_R_R
      @_R_R_R 3 місяці тому +1

      True. I still dont care though, we should add more 50s, like yeah its unfair but... its robbing people of their best event. Its like if track didnt have the 200 meter in the Olympics.

  • @AF-pw5ct
    @AF-pw5ct 3 місяці тому +1

    I think the reason they added the womens 1500 and the mens 800 is because of the gender imbalance, an implication that a 1500 was too long for women? The alternative was to keep one of those distance events for both men and women, but just have it be the same one.

    Considering that Wiffen had a horrible taper before the Budapest meet and finished around 6th in the 800, things changed. He did some serious video taping of his entry/flip/exit of his flip turns and said he could knock 3-4 secs off his time.Added to that his high altitude training, it has changed his swims.Living here in Ca and have swam the 800/1500( 1000/1650 yards, Wiffen needs some respect and props for a great swim that hopefully will improve at Paris-Gold for Ireland would be great. Maybe his new ride(Benz) gives him a good vibe/focus while heading off to the pool.Ride that stroke /ride that car….

    Have you seen the distance male races??? They were almost all there (a part from a few exceptions). Paltrinieri not making the final?? It was pretty great to watch!!
    Also, not really fan of your comments on the Championships because it was a really great Championships and Athletes that can be ready in February, June, and July should be recognized and applauded! I feel like you depreciate the work of the Swimmers that went there...
    Not mentioning that it was great for the Swimming to have such a big championships in February.
    100% with you regarding the 50s at the Olympics!!!
    About Adam Peaty, he comes from really far and he was really happy about the results and what's next! It's part of his come back and that's a huge step forward from a year ago!! Clearly he's not at his best, but he's on his way and that's sooo encouraging! Hopefully he'll be ready by July!!

    Hmmm I didn't follow the World Champs much except by headline as I knew some of the big swimmers I like to watch weren't there, with their Olympics training program precluding them. Although you were a little disappointed with Peaty's result, perhaps entering and competing was serving a different purpose - not out to break records/be the best but to just rehearse being on the world stage again, maybe even under-tapered intentionally?? Just a thought. But as I get older I totally agree on the 50m events, it is fun to watch swimmers - older swimmers - competing and winning at the highest level.

    Caro Cody, desta vez escrevo-te este comentário em português. É absolutamente incompreensível que não tenhas mencionado os 2 títulos de campeão do mundo do Diogo Ribeiro. Em primeiro lugar por ter sido um feito extraordinário para o Diogo e em segundo por ter sido um marco histórico para Portugal por terem sido os primeiros títulos mundiais na Natação para o nosso país. Preferiste, optaste por falar de um monte de banalidades. Pena. Esperava mais de ti deste teu video. 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹

    I watched it. I like men 200x4 free relay and women 50 free. Kate Douglas’s US record is amazing. It’s hard to believe she can do both free and breast so well.

    I watched a lot of the WCs. Living in Stockholm we’re lucky because Swedish public TV covered all sessions, with Lars Frölander as part of the commentary team. Totally agree with you about adding the 50s stroke at the Olympics, for the reasons you cited. Sjöström’s performances were fantastic, and the women’s 50 free in general was red hot with 3 racers going under 24s, (has that ever happened before?) including Kate Douglass setting a new American record. 🎉

    Your take on distance is idiotic. Wiffen had great swims.The 50s are too short. Under 30 seconds of viewing. Kate Douglass has some terrific swims.

      Wiffen was still slower than the previous 2 winners by a few seconds.

    Watched it with my 9yrs old daughter (swimmer). Totally totally agree about Peaty, not sure if it is more mental than physical. Disagree on long distance event (I am a triathlete, so I enjoy watching the timing of the stroke in those events). Agree on the 100free 🔥. Happy for Curzan, too

    Sorry Cody
    The way you feel about distance is the way I feel about 50’s (any). Just not interested. 100’s are the shortest real event:)

      Can you even name more than 10 distance swimmers? I’m tired of seeing the same names pop up again and again.

    Completely disagree with his comment on Peaty. The guys been out a long time just like dressel and to pop out a 58 in the semi unrested in February says good signs . Cody miller needs to just learn to look at the bigger picture and no run his mouth off when he’s going 1.01 on the 100 breast and 2.16 in his meets. Give the guy a break

    IMO 50's are boring. Prefer to see some strategy and lead changes rather than a line of splash across the screen and you need to watch the replay to see who won

    Talking shite about Peaty, fastest he’s been in a long time, you don’t know what the guy has been through or the Prep he’s had going in or even if he’s fully rested at the meet. The main focus will be the games and who gives a shit if he goes 59, the guy is enjoying what he’s doing.

      They are less of a joke than, say, the 50 yard free. I really don’t care that Gretchen Walsh just went 20.77. She isn’t making the Olympic team in the 50 free LC.
