    Great video. I'm new here, but I have been binge watching your uploads lately. As usual, your thoughts are presented very well, accompanied by comprehensive breakdowns.
    In my opinion, the NES had the definitive "Ninja Gaiden experience" during that time period. The full trilogy was also "remastered" for the 16-bit SNES... but all three games were worse there.
    There's also a European region released Genesis/Mega Drive version of the first Ninja Gaiden. Maybe we'll see you cover that too at some point?? 🤔

    That is not parallax, it's literally tiles shaking left and right constantly when you move. Seems unfinished

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  7 місяців тому +7

      They animate correctly, ironically, if you run in the opposite direction. It's still terribly choppy, but it simulates a parallax layer as one would expect.
      On the flip side, there are also plenty of games that use a stationary 2nd background layer even on systems that support full hardware layers like the Genesis and SNES.
      The solution Hudson used for this game is one of the worst I've ever seen.

    PCE makes 5-3 look like you're in a giant elevator for whatever reason. PCE wins in the cut scenes easily. Malth isn't wearing a roast turkey for a helmet at the very least.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  7 місяців тому +2

      For the cut scenes... they're kind of a split between the two versions. Some scenes look better on NES, some on PCE. I think Ryu and Irene generally look worse (especially Ryu without a mask) on PCE.
      Still... If i wasn't recording them for this video I'd be skipping every one of those scenes in both versions.

  • @ParanoiaDragon
    @ParanoiaDragon 2 місяці тому +1

    Ah, to be a fly on the wall between Hudson Soft and the team developing the game!
    My understanding is that at least some of the game was outsourced to a team in China, which looking at the credits, there's definitely some non-japanese names in there. So very likely the programmers at least were first timers for coding on the PC Engine.
    Recently, one programmer that's worked on the hardware over the years noted that they should have been easily able to update the dynamic tiles in the background at a constant rate rather than as slow and jerky as it's going. In fact, he noted that the giant "elevator level" with the vertical scrolling rocks uses the exact same technique and looks far smoother. Same goes for Ys 3, & at least one section in Ys 2. A static faux parallax background had already been done previously in games on PCE, so theoretically it's something that it should have been easy to do.
    Perhaps if Hudson Soft outsourced it to Now Productions who handled Jackie Chan and New Adventure Island among others, it would have turned out far better. They had years of experience on the PCE doing games for both Namco and Hudson & pulling off various parallax techniques.
    And the music, why? I eoughly enjoy both soundtracks more or less but why it changed, is beyond me. Was there some kind of special rights to whomever did the music in the NES version? Maybe that would have increased the licensing cost? Never thought about it before but I think going CD with this game would have been the correct route. Really go all out, but once again, get someone more experienced with the hardware!
    I would have preferred they transfer over the arcade Ninja Gaiden as that style of game is desperately needed on the PCE and I enjoy it a lot more than the NES game. Pce really has nothing that compares to Final Fight or Streets of Rage. That's not to say there aren't fun brawlers on it, but nothing that matches up to those games.
    My old team that I worked with had a couple in the works but real life got in the way and we broke up. Though it does sound like there's at least one homebrew brawler that is eventually going to be in the works, so I'm hoping it's going to be better than the average brawler on the pce.
    Oh and if I'm remembering right, Ninja Gaiden is on the PC Engine mini for some reason. That's another head scratcher!

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, it's kinda surprising how few scrolling beat 'em ups there are on the system. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a good homebrew one to see what could have been done on the hardware. I suspect the sprite limit would have made things pretty tough for a game in the genre.

    • @ParanoiaDragon
      @ParanoiaDragon 2 місяці тому

      @@InglebardGaming Indeed. I can only guess that if the TG had done better stateside, there are at least would have been a few more beat em ups. For instance, perhaps Konami would have made a TMNT game which from what I've heard, that series had more success in the west than they did in the east. I would guess that it would have been the first arcade game if not something similar to Hyperstone Heist.
      The one brawler I am aware of, I don't know anything about it other than it's in the plans down the road and it's by the guy who did FX Unit Yuki.
      Yeah the sprite limit would definitely be a problem and they would have to keep a certain amount of enemies off screen. I think Riot Zone perhaps uses three enemies on screen max? But that's only with one player, since there is no two player mode in that game. I know you can move enemies off screen which I think is part of the trick with sprite limitations in these types of games, but I don't recall if there's some sort of downside to that.
      Bitmap Bureau seems to be doing multiple console versions of Final Vendetta, and they recently told me that doing Xeno Crisis on the PCE is high on their list. So it does make me wonder if they might perhaps try making a version of Final Vendetta on the PCE besides Xeno Crisis.

    I like the music on the pc engine version but the NES is one of the best OST of videogame history so any change would always be a tough comparisson. But the graphics looks much better on the background, but the characters although have more color but everything seems more tiny and undefined. The unforgivable sin it's that choppy animated graphics for the background, it's so really distracting that empedes seeing the characters properly and got me killed too many times

    Is it a normal opinion that Ninja Gaiden is easier than Ninja Spirit? It took me almost a year of practice to beat Ninja Gaiden when I was young, but I beat Ninja Spirit the weekend I rented it. Of course, I was playing the PC Engine mode. I understand the arcade mode and especially the actual arcade game are more difficult.

      Ninja Spirit is easier in PC Engine mode with the added health and stuff... but if we're talking arcade mode, Ninja Gaiden is WAY easier than Ninja Spirit.
      I rented Ninja Gaiden on NES for 24 hours when I was 13 and beat it before returning it! My friends though I was lying, but nope, beat it in that 24 hours because I knew that was all the time I was going to have with it.

    I've played the PCE version on an emulator, and yeah I got the sense it wasn't as good as the NES original. only played the first level or two because, yknow it's ninja gaiden thus stupidly hard in some parts? so appreciate seeing it all the way through here. it's definitely a mixed bag with some areas' makeovers being improved and some not-so-much... but yeah the soundtrack is a definite downgrade! I did like a couple of the background effects but yeah that attempt at parallax was just awful. I finished the NES version once on NSO (and believe you me I abused savestates, especially so I didn't have to deal with chapter 6's bullshit loop. I heard that was a glitch they liked so much they kept it in... go figure it was retained for the PCE version!) NES definitely comes out on top, but in all likelihood I don't think I'd go back to it after that.

    the respawning part that you mention I think its worse on the pc engine Ive played it and for me it had me struggling at some parts that in the nes version didnt. In the nes version it was annoying but if you kept moving it wouldnt be that much of a problem, and on the contrary on the pc engine some parts the flying enemies kept respawning at the moment... Far superior? Definitely not. I played the PCE version for almost as many years as the NES one, I don't have any nostalgia for either one.
      The PCE version could have been much better than it was on the hardware and it really is baffling as to why it wasn't a CD release when it came out.
      It's not a bad game, but there's a lot that could have and should have been better. The animated tiles, some of the very plain or just weird backgrounds, the nerfed ninja wheel, the blander music and the barely improved cutscenes... it's hard to believe it wasn't a much earlier release on the system.

It has been said to be mostly a team in China. Looking at the credits, that seems to be the case, at least in the case of the programmers.
      In my opinion, Hudson should have outsourced it to perhaps Now Productions since they're more familiar with the hardware. They've done a ton of games on the PCE for both Namco and Hudson including Bravoman, Genpei Tomaden 1 & 2, Dragon Saber, New Adventure Island, Jackie Chan, etc. All games that use various techniques for parallax. They definitely have more experience with the hardware. Not sure if anybody on the PCE Ninja Gaiden team had ever worked on the PCE before or after this game.

      I suspect that this is emulation problem, I bet it does not do that on a real or FPGA PC-Engine. PC-Engine does not have 2 background layer so they have to use some other mean to do this. Games like Lords of Thunder use very clever ways to achieve perfect multiple fake background parallax.
      Update : just tested on my Analog Duo and although it is not as bad when you actually play, it is not good. They simpy flip the tile instead of animating the tile to fake scrolling. It is not too distracting when you play it. Nothing like the horrible Jim Power.

    • @ParanoiaDragon
      @ParanoiaDragon 2 місяці тому

      My understanding is, it's what some would call a static background. It's supposed to stay completely in place while the foreground overlaps it. It uses what are called dynamic tiles which are basically tiles that are animated. And apparently that's what is going on in that giant elevator level as well, except that looks far smoother! So why they couldn't do it horizontally but vertically it was okay is far beyond me. Especially when the same trick has been done in other games by different development teams.

Looking at things as preferences rather than I'm right and everyone else is wrong.
