Isiah Thomas was 3/19 in this game. Larry Bird shot 13/26 from the field and 4/5 from the free throw line. Game was December 4, 1982. It's telling that Rick Robey is still the first guy off the bench. The team eventually "quit" on head coach Bill Fitch, partly because of his dislike for Kevin McHale. Fitch once famously told McHale "if you have to play center in this league, you'll starve." To this day, McHale can't stand him. Robert Parish was no Fitch fan, either.
Ricky Robey is quite an enigma to me. For someone listed at 6'11 with a fairly long wingspan.. he only blocked 90 shots in his entire NBA career (493 games from 1978 to 1986). McHale made much better use of his height and length by comparison, so it's equally strange why Bill Fitch disliked him. Fitch was just lucky to win in 1981 thanks to Bird's brilliance, but he clearly made things difficult for the Celtics in 1982 and especially 1983 (such a wasted year). Easily one of the worst NBA coaches ever. Fitch is the bloke responsible for making Maravich retire...who could've been part of the 1981 championship team, has serious issues with Ralph Sampson, and made things difficult for Brent Barry in his first few years (LA Clippers).
No they weren't. That Cliff Livingston foul on Bird would have been an ejection today. Nobody played clean back then, just that some played dirtier. But most teams were brutal. If you dared to drive to the basket, you'd go home in a body bag
this tom owens guy was a real hoot with his "moves". i watched every celts game from 1977 through 1987 and can't remember him. detroit must not have kept him around long
@@toscodav nothing at all- just enjoying the clowns of yester-decade NBA. included in that (when it came to celts) was kent benson, tripucka, cureton, laimbeer could only guard parish by injuring him. it was a grand old time

This Tom Owens fellow had a serviceable career in both ABA and NBA... 9,898 total points in 877 total games (ABA+NBA combined) for a 11.3 career ppg. He played from 1971 to 1983, so he was in his last season as an NBA player in this clip. Probably the first and *only* time Bird let "that* happen.
This is the defensive team that stopped the bulls multiple times. Bird would muuurrrder this modern league..murder charge.

Owens started his career in the ABA in the early '70s and played as mostly a backup for several teams during his career.
