  • For this abandoned mine exploration, we visit the Big Four Mine in Death Valley. We hiked up the very steep mountain following a long ore chute that led to an adit. It took a fair amount of searching and scrambling to find all of the higher workings. After exploring the upper workings, we came down lower on the mountain and searched for what was reported to be a 900' long adit. We found a mostly eroded shut portal and dug it out enough for Julie to squeeze into. She explored that adit by herself. Next we found the bottom of the tram where a tram bucket still sat next to a pile of ore. There are also the remains of the old camp there. We went on one more climbing mission to the last two adits at this site, which are a good distance away from the others.
This was primarily a lead/zinc mine with silver, gold, and copper as secondary metals that were mined here. The mine was worked in the 1940's and into the 1950's.
Here is a link to another video you might enjoy featuring a very rare steam powered hoist.

Hey Tom and Smiling Julie .... now imagine the prospector who was up on those hills looking for outcroppings all day and then finding something and having to start mining it ...... love that portal shot.... wow ...those caps are in great shape, they could still be used ....we use to find the old copper case ones..... need to get you in our Drift and help muck out a few tons a day hahahah....good job Julie on the belly crawl... another fun explore you two ...keep'em coming and be safe out there

Hi Jeff. This just proves once again that prospecting is not for sissies. I don't know how those old goats can climb around the hills looking for an outcropping with a canteen, a pick, and a couple pieces of jerky. It is a cool looking portal. Julie is a good explorer. I think I would have gotten stuck crawling in that lower portal. We're back in Oregon now, or I would come and muck for you. Thanks for the comment!👍👍😁

The work it took just to build the infrastructure on that first mine was incredible, can’t imagine. If these men kept any kind of daily log it’d be so cool to read. Yep the ending startled me a bit, pretty neat though. Another great episode, thanks for y’all’s hard work.

Yes, the amount of work the old timers did is amazing. Just to locate and get to these areas is difficult. To build a mine and haul in all the equipment and materials is unreal. It would be cool to find a written log book. Thanks for the comment!👍👍😁

One Brave Explorer, you got there Tom. Julie is extremely cool 😎 I envy your guises lifestyle my wife and I get out there as much as possible. I only wish my wife had the confidence Julie has. Sure my wife goes into minds with me and climb ladders but only because she loves me. otherwise, it’s a little bit out of her comfort zone. Even though we’ve been doing it for a while now. Another great video it was nice to hear Julie narrate once a while.👍🏻

Julie is a really good all around explorer. We're glad that you enjoyed her narration. It's not always all fun and games for us, either. She has more common sense than me and gets apprehensive about things occasionally. It's a good thing she's with me, or I'd probably get myself into big trouble. So you guys take it slow, have fun, and stay safe. Thanks for the comment!👍👍

The things those miners did is just incredible!!! How did they haul all that wood up there and build that ore chute???
Also how did they get that heavy equipment up there???
They were truly the greatest generation!!!

Wow, that ending jet was intense.
You noted a bit hazy there, we're dealing with the wildfires haze here, no blue skies.
    I love the flowers!
I thought Julie's two explorations were great. The stope and digging entrance. Showing mineralization they were after in those 👍🏻
I'm glad you did detail on the hoist and stove. Those parts are always interesting 👍🏻
That first with the chutes and track had some bigger things going on up higher perhaps? I wondered why there wasn't an incline or other shaft to more levels? Then the blasting caps! I think that's the first time I've seen more than one or a few. And not usually in the box. Amazing.
That was an ingenious bucket with the chain hinge!

Nice "twist" of video with Julie being the "lone" explorer in the one section. A bit of a snug fit getting in there. Any concerns going into the unknown like that? Trepidation? Adrenaline rush?
Looked like a lot fun and I really appreciate the effort you both put into these videos. Always a pleasure to watch. Thanks!

The desert was looking good when we were on this mission. The cacti blooms are incredible. Julie did great squeezing into that small portal. There are always some concerns when entering a mine like that. I think the hole was too small for a lion to get through, so we weren't worried about that. The excitement that comes with going into a mine like that where nobody has been for a while is what mine exploring is all about. We get buzzed regularly by fighter jets in that valley, which is Panamint Valley, so not terribly surprising. We're glad that you enjoyed the explore and thanks for commenting!👍😁

Wings were added to Chevron signs during WWII . The wings formed a "V" for Victory. The design continued on into the 1950's. My father worked for Chevron and I remember them very well. Heritage House was the house brand, I think but not sure, for Dominick's Grocery stores in the Chicago area. Went BK in 2013. Tram bucket in wash was sure inventive. An Idaho pal's brother still uses a Majestic wood stove in his mountain cabin. It had been their grandmother's.

@@TomandJulieMineExploring I've beeen looking online for a winged Chevron sign for sale for years, but no luck so far. My best memory of a winged sign was at the gas station in Baker in the the 1950's. Bends can be straightened out. Not perfect but better than nothing. I have a desert pal who collects old Mojave Desert Auto Club signs flat, bent, and/or shot full of holes. I bought a sign from him years ago that had been bent in half. It's been straightened and the paint nicely touched up. Almost perfect, it says "Silver Lake" with an arrow. SL was a T&T RR town north of Baker.

We've had several fighter jets lock in on us for practice. This one wasn't as low as some and didn't kick in the after burners. That adventure was great! OK, the pieces of the puzzle to the overhead cable, The pneumatic winch, the ore bucket at the bottom and the "Y" shaped metal at the bottom? It looks like it was a sky tram for the improvised ore bucket at the bottom. One man could operate the air wench lowering the pay ore town the tram to the bottom where it would hit the "Y" shaped stop at the bottom. It would trip the bucket release and automatically dump its contents onto that pile of ore then the hoist operator would winch the bucket back up to be refilled. That was probably used in the early days of the mining operation till the long wooden ore chute was built. It would have been great to see how they were really using those old parts.
