The phrase you’re looking for is “freezing point depression”. It takes a lower (much much lower) temp to freeze alcohol, so it will stay liquid below the freezing point of ice, keeping it from melting. Same reason why salt melts ice without providing additional heat
Dilution is such a commonly overlooked feature it's pretty amazing. Ever since I've started mixing I've been adding splashes of chilled filtered water into almost all drinks because it skips the time it takes for the ice to melt and get the drink to that perfect concentration of alcohol/water. (Yes of course I mix my Martinis for at least 30s) but try it with a splash of water next time.
I truly appreciate the amount of mint you use. I had several mint juleps tonight, bartender only put like a sprig with 3 leaves as a garnish. It was basically bourbon over ice with a mint garnish...

I'm pretty keen on mint as a flavor (it is likely my favorite flavor) and summarily mint juleps which I happen to be enjoying now. I tend to go a lot lighter on the ice though, use powdered sugar when I muddle, and add a splash of soda water to get a bit of a nice fizz going as a personal preference, but now you've inspired me to try it in your way as well.
Another great video. I love your stuff because you are doing just what I would do if I was... ... doing what you're doing... :) Just keep doing it... for both of us!
Wow, I've only been using a couple mint leaves in mine. A few in the shaker (I use a shaker), and a few in the glass I pour it in. I'm going to have to try it your way. Must be a powerful flavor. Cheers.
Thanks for a great spin on the original. Here's the excerpt from The Bartenders Guide by Jerry Thomas circa 1862. I spent YONKS making that cocktail guide easy to read with today's measures and language. The julep is peculiarly an American beverage, and the Southern states is more popular than any other. It was introduced into England by Captain Marryatt, where it is now quite a favorite. The gallant captain seems to have had a penchant for the nectareous drink, and published the recipe in his work on America. We give it in his own words: "I must descant a little upon the mint julep, as it is, with the thermometer at 100°, one of the most delightful and insinuating potations that ever was invented, and may be drunk with equal satisfaction when the thermometer is as low as 70°. There are many varieties, such as those composed of claret, Madeira, &c. ; but the ingredients of the real mint julep are as follows. I learned how to make them, and succeeded pretty well. Put into a tumbler abont a dozen sprigs of the tender shoots of mint, upon them put a spoonful of white sugar, and equal proportions of peach and common brandy, so as to fill it up one-third, or perhaps a little less. Then take rasped or pounded ice, and fill up the tumbler. Epicures rub the lips of the tumbler with a piece of fresh pineapple, and the tumbler itself is very often incrusted outside with stalactites of ice. As the ice melts, you drink. I once overheard two ladies talking in the next room to me, and one of them said, “Well, if I have a weakness for any one thing, it is for a mint julep!”-a very amiable weakness, and proving her good sense and good taste. They are, in fact, like the American ladies, irresistible."
Made these tonight for the derby, Perfection! ( though I did add about half again the simple syrup, I have a sweet tooth) Thanks for what you do, love the channel! Greg, if you ever want to do a boat drinks episode I would be happy to host, afloat, down in Jersey on the Barnegat Bay.

Almost like an apple pie taste with some whip cream topping and some cinnamon on top
One of my all time favorites to drink. Nice and simple to make and really tasty
aaaaaaand now i gotta listen to the bloody song again.... i just got it out of my head a few weeks ago. thanks. love the drinks
I enjoyed the ending. Brought about an unexpected chuckle
Love your videos, I am hooked on discovering drink recipes now. Ive always loved to try different drinks, and your show is the perfect way to learn them all. Very entertaining & insightful, great work, great production, high quality video with high quality cocktail mixology !!
you drunk is funny... love the channel!
That first bourbon pour was the cleanest pour I've ever seen on how to drink! 🤣🍸
Love it. I got second hand drunk just reading how much alcohol is in this.
As always Greg, these drinks look excellent! The presentation, the creation, each aesthetic shot; excellent work HTD crew.
Great video! Can't wait to see the full length version similar to the old fashioned video!
Another great video.
I love your stuff because you are doing just what I would do if I was... ... doing what you're doing...
:)
Just keep doing it... for both of us!
The sweetest drink I've tried. And also the sneakiest one if the bartender does the drink well to get a buzz.
I’ve had them WAYYYYYYY too sweet. Like equal parts sugar/bourbon. Don’t do that
Im not much of a drinker but I LOVE your videos ❤️ from 🇨🇦
Whoever does the description should get a raise methinks
Mint julep is second to my favorite, the old fashioned. This looks great 👍🏻
Glad to see a return to a more traditional episode! The GoT and pop culture are solid, but much prefer something like this.
It’s gonna be straight 50/50 once GoT finishes
I'm a simple man. I see new How To Drink episode and I click.
Went looking to see if you had a recipe for this today, and you uploaded it moments earlier. Well played!
Wow, I've only been using a couple mint leaves in mine. A few in the shaker (I use a shaker), and a few in the glass I pour it in. I'm going to have to try it your way. Must be a powerful flavor. Cheers.
6:33 the tasting notes always bring up the best jokes... 🤣🤣🤣
“I'm on the ground with my mint julip.“
😂👌
I absolutely love the little "Black Betty" at the end. Greg needs a GoFundMe campaign for an album (lol)
Posted on my birthday. Great Video!
Happy birthday!
Huh, very surprised not to see the Seiko SKX in this video. Always been a huge fan of seeing that on the wrist. This watch looks interesting, definitely vintage inspired with a a large domed crystal. Logo looks like Invicta maybe? Either way, great content as usual!
Things took a serious turn at the very end🤣😂. The Julep must have kicked into Afterburner mode because things went from sane to insane very quickly! Excellent video my guy🎯!!!
This is fantastic, I've never heard of throwing rum on top. Going to have to try that!
"I'm on the floor with a mint julep." Needs to be on a T-shirt with your logo.
It just hit me the text graphic "that's a muddlin" is a simpsons reference. Well done sir
Ooh, mint, bourbon, and RUM! Yum!
Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a bartender!
