- In this video I show how to process a Milky Way nightscape in Photoshop alone. No other software or additional plugins. I cover AI noise reduction, basic edits, and blending a foreground with a tracked sky.

Thanks Walt. Watching your videos is helping pass time as i lay in this stupid hospital
Really love the no bs, only meat and potatoes in this video. Tons of valuable info here delivered in 18 minutes. Thank you!
Great job. Clear, concise and to the point. I have watched a lot of other tutorials and often people rush through steps and it takes multiple replays to see where the mouse clicks are.
Thank you, out standing vid, many thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you!!! It definitely helps someone like me to understand how things are to be done in post process 🙏
Brilliant Video I can now proceed carefully with instead of taking 1 image I can now take a Pic of Foreground I can go to take a Milky Way and then Merge >> I have the Equipment >> Z8 and Nikon 20mm f1.8 S but at 73 Computers scare me .. but this Video gives me confidence>> from South Africa
Dude, you are a gem! Best tutorial videos regarding astrophotography.
Thank you! Glad you got something from it!
Awesome video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Again I learned new tricks which will help me process my nightscape images:)
absolutely wonderful video! Great tip on using the "sky replacement tool" in photoshop. I have no idea when I never thought to do that! super looking forward to getting out soon to shoot! Cheers
Such videos are a treasure for my personal development in Astro, thank you
Thanks Walt - great tutorial without using the extra add-on software - this is ideal
Thanks for this video! It’s the best tutorial that I’ve found on Milky Way photography editing.
Thanks Walt, excellent continuation video from the previous video, I really enjoyed this Milky Way editing class. Thanks Walt and continuation of Clear Skies
Great video as usual. It would be really interesting to see something similar but applied to a more complex foreground, such as a series of tree silhouettes that usually drive me crazy.Ciao ciao.
Great video Walt. Nice to learn about the sky replacement tool and fine tuning masks using 'overlay' blend - very useful. The PS AI denoise function is very good and will probably discourage me from taking too many single exposures!!!
Thank you Walt, I was having trouble with some of my sky replacement, this has really helped. Thank you again for an awesome tutorial.
Awesome video as always !
Great video that I will use in the future! Thanks for sharing this 👌
Hey Walt, hope you’re feeling better real soon and getting back at it. Just wanted to let you know shot my first Milky Way last night. Never really thought about Astro photography until I stumbled across your channel a couple months ago. Having recently retired I gifted myself a new R6 and the Rokinon 24 mm f1.4 thanks to your inspiration. I’m really excited to get back out there and get some more.
Can’t wait to use these techniques later this summer 🤙🏼
Thanks for sharing your expert knowledge Walt. I have been curious about using LRC Denoise for Milky Way. Can denoise substitute for stacking say 10 Milky Way images for noise reduction? I use the same method you did in the video for star reduction and like it.
Nice video, way too cool.
🎉great job,….thank you very much 😊
This is a great video and I really appreciate your explaining how to do things in Photoshop in a simple way. I also like how you explain your equipment what you use, Why use and how you use it? It’s very very helpful. My one critique is that you use background music, which unfortunately is very distracting. It would be great to either turn it way down or just skip it since what you’re talking about is so good no sense in diluting it with music. Save the music for the end when you show your terrific photos or something like that. Thanks again great video.
Walt I've learned a lot from your videos. Question. When I do a panorama PTguy and do the StarXteminator . My image has blotches specialy in the uper part. What Can I do? Many thanks
Great video, thankyou 🎉 Do you prefer PS to Lightroom for this job? Regards, Cam
Great video mate!
A question, when you combined the two images, it appears that a lot of stars around Milky Way gone purple/pink again and a lot more of them like before the reduction, do you reckon?
Hey Walt.
Great video.
Question..... Do you ever run into snakes?
All...the....time! Especially in the fall when it starts to cool down and they move too slow to get out of the road before I walk up on them.
Great video Walt! A great way of combining things. Looks fantastic!!!
Nice video, informative. Have you ever thought about using Siril and Affinity for processing, instead of pay for software. Just asking from a cheap beginner perspective.
If I didn't have PixInsight, Siril would be my go-to for deep sky processing. It's really great software. As far as a Photoshop alternative, I haven't really tried much. For every one GIMP or Affinity astro tutorial on UA-cam there are probably 100 Photoshop tutorials. And the same goes for plug-ins. There are so many great plug-ins out there for Photoshop. The $10 a month kinda sucks, but I have friends that spend that daily on coffee. Photoshop is WAY cheaper than that!
Great. Its Photoshop 2022?
Nice.
do you/ have you used GIMP ?
And another question, do you think using a selection tool instead dodge/burn (white/black) would have been easier to merge two images together or more complicated?
What's your experience?
It really depends. On an image like this where the sky and foreground were taken at dark site at about the same time, it would be easier to just make a selection and turn it into a mask. But when shooting the foreground at blue hour or when the moon is out, the sky replacement tool really helps with balancing colors. I should probably make a video showing all the different ways you can blend. There's no right or wrong way to do it as long as it turns out looking good.
Would make an awesome video Walt, three different ways to blend ground/sky…pros cons.
In the method used here… I find using overlay to make white/white good,I burn shadows to make blacks black😊
👍🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Awesome video!
Thank you!
