  • Hi all. Following on from the Lipo vs. NiMH tests I did with the Arrma 3s cars, this time it's a couple of Tamiya buggies. Featured are the Tamiya Hornet which is brushed and Terra Scorcher which is brushless. What difference will the battery type make to the top speed? Well you'll have to watch and find out! Many thanks indeed for watching. Please like and comment and all that :-)

    Nice test!! That same thing happened to my terra scorcher swear the tires were like half full with sand! What i did and it worked like a charm was make two nice size holes opposite each other in the tires and they got nothing in them the last time out when I bashed it! I think i show it in one of my latest tera scorcher videos.

      Hiya Steve. Yeah with the replacement wheels and tyres I did the same thing. Blocked the holes in the wheels and put holes in the tyres. Also I'm not planning to run this in the sand anymore. It does run great now. Many thanks indeed for watching and your kind feedback. Best wishes 😁👍

      Hi there. Yeah lipos are faster and lighter but a lot of folks don't like the risk of fire and I can understand that. Many thanks indeed for your great support as ever. Much appreciated 😁👍👍

    Good job, Pete! Love your tests. Uhh, a healthy 6S NiMH should charge above 9v. Well, but then again, it drops again sitting idle so it might not make a difference once you get to the location. But great test. Yeah, couple of kph of difference is also what I get. Always wanted to do a re-measurement after 10 minutes or so of run time. And then again 15 minutes. I think that’s the point where the difference will be very visible (NiMH should have dropped in voltage much more than the LiPo after 10 minutes of discharge). Maybe you are up for the task instead of me ? 😊 Would sure be interesting to see. Anyways thanks for the enjoyable video and your lovely sense of humor. Best wishes my mate.

      Hiya Mikael. Oh I knew you'd be into this nerdy battery testing! Yeah that's a great idea to test the batteries after 10 or 15 minutes. I probably won't do both times for both cars and both batteries or the video might be too long but maybe just do it at 15 mins. Should be interesting and a bit nerdy. I did start testing a brushed and brushless Lunchbox so I could add to that. Thanks for your great feedback as ever. Hope you are all doing well there. We've currently got wind and rain and it's more like October but I'd rather have that than the 40c plus that some parts of Europe have got. Good excuse for some indoor tasks 😁

    You know what this means Pete? In standard trim the 27 turn silver can motor is actually slower than a Tyco/ Taiyo turbo jet hopper. I seem to remember and my brother owned a turbo jet hopper the packaging said something about it was either 25 or 28 KMH. And the hornet with the standard silver can motor and lipo only gets to 29 KMH. 🤔 I own a hornet also. I love the car but its a shock that a toy grade RC car from the 1980's went faster. At least thats what Tyco said on the packaging. But then that car used 8x AA cell batteries. So 8x 1.5 volts is 12 volts. I seem to remember it was pretty fast and the turbo hit pretty hard. But then toy grade rc cars were not upgradable like a Tamiya is. In Australia Tyco was called Taiyo. Great work Pete 👍👌

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC  9 місяців тому

      Ah that's interesting. It is possible as some of the toy grade cars were very light and quite quick. I had a little pickup truck which I think was a Tyco and I remember it being quite quick. Be interesting to do a test with both cars in the same conditions to see if the jet hopper is really quicker. Like you say the advantage of the hobby grade cars is that you can upgrade and fix them. Many thanks for watching and your great feedback. Much appreciated 😁👍

    Pete interesting vid mate. l am Mr old School and use NiMH packs still and love them it has to said! I have no plans to go lipo and you keep backing that up buddy! By accident of course but first with your lipo house fire and vids like this one showing there is not a massive difference between 2S lipo and NiMH packs. l do understand 3S and above is a different ball game but l am happy! I run a mix of brushless and brushed and never feel l need more speed!
    Maybe one day l will get into Lipo? Certainly not anytime soon!
    Great vid and top notch humour as always my friend.
    Cheers James.

      Hi there. Yeah I was surprised that it doesn't make too much difference, especially in the brushed cars. It's when you get to the bigger heavier cars that the lipo batteries really come into their own. Many thanks for watching and your great feedback as ever. Much appreciated 😁👍👍

    Nice video Pete , enjoyed that with your commentary. Interesting to see that in some cases there’s not much in it between nimh and lipo, the bigger difference being a lipo in a brushless car . Cheers for sharing :)

      @PeteWylieRC  Рік тому

      Hiya Andy. Yeah it's good to know for folks who don't want to have lipos in case they go on fire. The big difference really comes with the bigger cars like the Arrma's that are 3s and above. Many thanks for watching and your feedback mate 🙂

    Hi Pete, great video as always mate! Plenty to think about here and love the humour along the way - that dog was a star, how did you get it to perform on cue?!?!? Bloody fast it was too! Anyway, as I now actually have a few LiPo's I can actually confirm your findings! When running silver cans and mild tunes brushed motors, the difference is very minimal. Definitely a little perkier in terms of throttle response on a LiPo though, I think the weight helps here as you mentioned. Fun test mate, hope Sunday is going well and all the best for the week ahead. Cheers! 😎😎👍👍

      Hiya mate. Oh yes I had the dog on standby to liven up the dull speed run of the Hornet 😂 I do still like the fact that the lipos stay peppy till the end of the run. Also something I hadn't mentioned is that I think they lose power when they are a bit older but I haven't really got the data to back it up. Lipos obviously pack up eventually although those Gartpot ones have been run to death and still good. Making this did remind me how slow brushed Tamiyas are. I'm well happy with how the Terra Scorcher is running. Really good on these big grassy areas. Anyway the weekend was slightly scuppered by the weather so mainly been doing a bit of tinkering. Having said I'd rather have the weather that we've got than the 40c plus that they've had in Europe. Cheers for your great feedback as ever mate. Best wishes 😁👍👍

    Another great video Pete!
    That Terra scorcher is rapid..... and you just couldn't resist getting it airborne could you? 😂
    At least you didn't loose the spring this time mate!
    Nicely presented info there bud, and kinda backs up what I have found.
    Must admit though, my monster beetle running on a 23 turn superstock bz does seem 'significantly' quicker on 2S lipo compared to NIMH..... perhaps as its a fairly heavy vehicle it makes more of a difference than in a lightweight buggy? 🤔
    So the question is-
    Is the gain from 2S over NIMH worth the hassle of balance charging, storage charge,
    protective charging bag/tin and potentially burning your house down? 🔥
    I'm guessing it is, or I wouldn't be running any Lippo's at all!
    The longer running times clench it for me!
    Bit of an Animal theme going on in UA-cam land recently.....
    What with Onyx cat on ours, Dom and his cow 'Bessie', and you with your New forest pony's and that brushless 3s dog!! 🤣
    Very entertaining.
    All the best fella. 👍 👍 👍 👍

      Hi there. Oh yeah the Terra Scorcher is running very nicely now so I'm leaving it brushless. I'm going to do further tests of NiMH vs lipo to see about run times and also how much the performance drops after running it a while. Yeah I think that lipo is more of a benefit as you get to the heavier RC's. I can imagine that I'd be more nervous about then if I lived in a tower block. Despite my previous fire I feel ok now that they are kept and charged in the garage. Many thanks for your great feedback as ever mate. Best wishes 😁👍👍

    Interesting video there, seems your Terra Scorcher runs well. I have to say, I am still Team NiMH though, I think the extra couple of MPH is not really worth the change for me, but i did like watching your point of view on the subject. We keep meaning to do speed tests, but the speed meter thing is still in the box, one day we will get round to opening it up, also did you have to slow down for the horses 🤣👍

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC  Рік тому +1

      Hi there. Yeah you need to get your Terra Scorcher back in action if you haven't already. Really good on the short grass. With the batteries I think that sticking with NiMH does mean that you don't need to think about a safe place to store and charge them. Not much difference with these little Tamiyas but a big difference with my Arrma 3s cars so I wouldn't be without lipos for those. I look forward to your speed tests if you ever get the widget out of the box. Oh yes I'm very careful not to bother the horses. Cheers for watching 😁👍👍

    Hi there Pete, another great side by side comparison of NiMh vs LiPo, love the bouncy nature of the Hornet, just something about that Hornet sound 😊😊. The Terra Scorcher is a real mover ! That Absima brushless setup is amazing and really suits that chassis well. Your certainly the brushless setup master 😂😊😂. How was the dog, ready for some dinner and a rest 😂😂😂😂 hope you and the family are keeping well, best wishes 😊😊

      Hiya John. Yes while making this I was thinking that if I had the choice between the Hornet and the Terra Scorcher then it's not much of a contest. It's fun to see the retro handling of the Hornet but it's a bit rubbish compared to the more modern chassis. Oh yes the dog demanded treats and royalties for his part in the video 😂 Hope you and yours are doing well mate. Best wishes 😁👍👍
