Ván Records proudly presents the highly anticipated third full-length album of ATLANTEAN KODEX!
Almost nothing certain is known about this enigmatic outfit from the northern forests of the kingdom of Bavaria. Formed around 2005/2006 by Trummer and Kreuzer, the band quickly managed to become the centre of the new European epic metal movement. Their disturbing “Pnakotic Demos”, released in 2007, gained them much praise and a fanatic following. After playing shows at most of the renowned European underground festivals like Keep It True, Up The Hammers or Hammer Of Doom, in 2010 the band released their debut album. “The Golden Bough“ proved to be a massive slab of regressive Epic Metal, which won "Album of the Month" - spots in magazines around the world, for instance Rock Hard Magazine Germany, Heavy Magazine Germany or Metal Hammer Greece.
2013 marked the zenith of ATLANTEAN KODEX’ career so far. Already a renowned headlining act by now, the band released their now-legendary album “The White Goddess”, which even took them to the top 60 German album charts. A colossal monument of dramatic and epic metal, the album took the world by storm. The album was praised by journalists and fans all over the world as one of the best Epic Metal albums ever. Deaf Forever Magazine (D) elected the album as „Best German Album of the new millenium“. Numerous top spots in magazines all over Europe and the USA marked the enormous impact the album had and a new epic metal scene formed around it with newer bands like Visigoth, Gatekeeper or Lethean quoting “The White Goddess” as a major influence.
After a longer hiatus the year 2019 marked the departure of long-standing lead guitar player Michael Koch, who was soon replaced by Coralie Baier. Even more important, the work on the long awaited third album was finished. Titled “The Course Of Empire” it is an monumental behemoth of molten Epic Metal and a more than worthy successor to “The White Goddess”. Darker, heavier, more raw and more complex might be fitting descriptions to provide an impression of mercilessly pounding of hymns like “Secret Byzantium” or “He Who Walks Behind The Years”. With thoughtful lyrics drawing from countless literary and mythological sources, “The Course Of Empire” is a feast for both the soul and the mind. It’s another masterpiece by one of heavy metal’s currently best and most original bands, both a proud creative statement of a defiance and a fist in the face of commercial mediocrity.
Rooted deeply in the sound of Bathory, old Manowar, Solstice and Manilla Road, ATLANTEAN KODEX deliver an unbelievably heavy mixture of dramatic hymns, harmonic twin guitars and fantastic melodies, telling tales of lost worlds and ages past. It would be, if the guitars weren't out of tune half of the time. Great album, great sound and all, indeed a brilliant work of art though! But the damn guitars get to me every damn time a lead sets in :(

I've waited for SO FUCKING LONG. And I've expected a masterpiece. And now they gave us a masterpiece. How satisfying is this?
Probably the album of the decade, with the only real competition being it's predecessor "The White Goddess". Is it better than "The White Goddess"? Only time will tell, I don't want to judge now. But I couldn't have imagined a better follow-up on this already perfect record. We stand in awe and bow our heads to the Atlatean Kodex!
I look forward to see them playing it live this saturday and will purchase my original copy (or two... CD and LP) at the show in case they bring it along. This stuff just deserves to be supported.

Unreal! Has this band ever written a bad song? Or even a mediocre one?
I actually found a few songs on the debut quite quirky, though masterpieces like "A Prophet In The Forest" and "Fountain Of Nephete" made up for that. Since the second album though? Nope.
The only songs of theirs that I am not totally in love with are "From Shores Forsaken”, "Vesperal Hymn", and "Disciples of the Iron Crown". Not bad by any means. Just not quite up to par with the rest of their catalogue. But "mediocre" Kodex is still better than most of their peers. And THIS album is another masterpiece, and when all is said and done it will be the crowning jewel of the epic heavy metal sub genre! At least until the next Kodex album, if we are ever fortunate enough to be blessed with another... 😜

Ein wenig rabiater als der Vorgänger, aber genauso meisterhaft. Neben "Awaken The Guardian" und "Into Glory Ride" ein Exempel für moderne, emotional vorgetragene, jedoch pragmatisch verarbeitete Musik.
Menschlicher geht es (trotz [oder gerade wegen?] der Subjektivität Trummers für das momentane Zeitgeschehen) nicht.
Jeder sollte seine Hochachtung vor diesem wahrhaften Meisterwerk und dem Können der Protagonisten mit dem Erwerb des Albums, egal in welcher Form, Tribut zollen.
Für mich, und da werde ich sicher nicht allein sein, ist dieses Album ein (weiteres) Meisterwerk der Band.
Epic is an understatment. This is Epic Metal if it would do MDMA.

When you look up "epic" in the dictionary...
One thing I stumbled across in the lyrics: "As sons of Adonai"... as far as I remember, "Adonai" is the holy name of God that is only to be used in prayers. So wouldn't "Sons of Adoshem" be more correct here?
Adonai is "my Lords" in English. I've never heard the word Adoshem. HaShem is commonly used but that only means "the name".The holy name of God is JHWH and that one is forbidden to be spoken out loud since the destruction of the 2nd temple which is why Jews use different placeholders like HaShem or Adonai in the first place. Even before the temple was destroyed only the High Priest was allowed to utter the holy name of God and only once a year on Yom Kippur when he was alone in the holiest of holys.

Why are steppe pastoralists referred to as "men of Yamna" in The Secret Byzantium? they never called themselves that way and never were called by that name. Yamna(ya) is a Russian term for deep-dug holes, the archeological complex of graves in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, from whence the Indo-Europeans came to Western Europe in the early Bronze Age. The people from Yamna culture are Maria Gimbutas's Kurgans (again, an anachronistic term from Turkic). The term "men of Yamna" is thus improper. As they were direct ancestors of Celts, some other term would be more appropriate, like "men of Tuatha"
Now here's the sad thing. I was born in Russia and while I communicate in German on a daily basis, I do speak Russian. I didn't even consider it to be the Russian word, eventhough I'm completely familiar with it. No after you mentioned it, I can't unhear it xD my head goes "people of the hole" every time I hear it now. I hope I can ask the band about it, because I don't want "people of the hole" stuck in my head forever...

come to think of it, the most proper designation of the invaders would be "Beaker people" or "Beaker folk", as their expansion in the Western Europe into Britain is inextricably connected with the expansion of Bell Beaker archeological complex - as well as distinct burial rituals and spiritual elements. I wonder if Manuel ever pondered the significance of the both cultural and demographic change in the early Bronze Age Europe, brought about by both the rise of Bell Beaker phenomenon and shifts in population. How the spiritual outlook of the ordinary men and women back then changed, how they started to view life and death, whether the shift from matriarchy to patriarchy was swift and brutal, or gradual...
Are there any good books on that topic that are obtainable in german and understandable for people who never even heard about this part of history?

No they are not fascist, racist or anything comparable. Just history/anthropology geeks (at least the guitar player is). They once gave a good interview on that topic (probably you can find it on the net) where they said that their lyrics lack the concept or nation to be considered anything that would come close to support fascist views.
From an interview:
"First of all, the concept of "race" is, from a biological point of view, bollocks. It is surely impossible to draw direct lines of continuity back to the Germanic tribes or the early Stone Age, as the Wicca movement does. You just have to be aware of the migration that has occurred throughout the last six thousand years even in relatively small areas. Even if you restrict your investigations to a secluded area like the Upper Palatinate, for example, you cannot find your individual roots. This is because the moving Germanic Tribes, Slavs or Francs have all left their marks, starting from the Mid Stone Age across the Celtic and Roman period along the Limes Wall.

I truly love the music of this band but seeing as there exist so many bands with comparable lyrical themes who espouse fascistic views I became suspicious. My fears have been shown to be unwarranted and I thank you once again for taking the time to explain the band's lyrical interests to me and not just call me a moron or some other derogatory term which is so fashionable these days. I even love them as band more. The music is beautiful and orchestral in scope to me and therefore I was hoping to be wrong, and I'm glad that I was wrong. Now I can enjoy the music even with greater appreciation. Take care.
