Just had a personal experience myself. I was flying Porter, “Canadian company” and they were checking everyone’s bag. I had my Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L and a MEC 18L, “Canada’s version of RIE”. I had used the compression straps and packing cubs so the bag was quite compact for its size. Walked up to check in and a few pleasant words later with ticket in hand. No bag check. My general rule is never use a roller bag and they for the most part leave you alone.
I try to avoid roller bags too - with one exception: one of the flights I take regularly is always overbooked and they offer free bag check at the gate. Since I’m never in a rush on either end of that flight, I go for a carry-on sized roller so I can check it for free at the gate without worrying about any soft sides. 😂 But every other circumstance? No rollers! (Easier to carry through crowds, too).
@awaytogether That is a misleading practice by companies intentionally trying to deceive consumers. FYI - The term "lame", use the way you did here, comes across as derogatory towards people with mobility disabilities
Thanks Nik !! More good info. We've watched so many of yours in preparation for our upcoming international trip. We were so worried about checking luggage and keeping up with it, worried about it getting lost, worried about the airline damaging it, etc etc etc. till we came across the video(s) where you stressed that its totally feasible to travel with only a carry-on and maybe a backpack. It made total sense! We've revamped everything, bought two hard-body carry-ons and two personal bags/backpacks. We even purchased a scale recently so that we know exactly what our stuff will weigh. Its actually kinda fun to see how much we'll be able to carry within the size and under the weight limits. Keep' em coming guys, the info is very useful.
Whenever you fly, check the info that comes with your itinerary. I just flew, the dimensions were listed, as was the ‘total weight of ALL carry on items not to exceed 7kgs”. They weighed everything, and put tags on each personal item, backpack, etc as the flight was full, and it really makes a difference to balance of the aircraft. Pretty easy to avoid an issue- follow the guidance
Thank you so much for doing this video. I did watch some of those videos and a I literally told my husband that I was waiting until you did a video on the change before I bought a different carry on.
Here's another thing that the AI channels won't do for us, take the time to create a spreadsheet like this and offer it for nothing. Thanks so much! I got the tool, checked the airlines of my next 2 flights, (one domestic - USA and one international (Philippines). I'm all set 22x14x9 fits! Thanks so much. Very helpful. Peace ☮
Thanks for this video. For international travel I review all airlines booked on the trip and follow the strictest airline’s guidelines with regard to size and weight to be sure I’m compliant.
TBH, it never occurred to me that anyone wouldn't do that automatically. Critically, if doing really basic stuff like that is beyond the traveller (and not necessarily any shame in that - my parents probably wouldn't/couldn't now, at their ages), then they aren't going to be able to cope with many of the other issues with international travel and to be safe should be booking through a travel agent - get the agent to do it all for them and be prepared to pay accordingly for those services.
WOW! Your spreadsheet is a truly awesome and extremely useful tool! I've never flown internationally, but compiling the US carriers into 1 smaller list will be nice. I have a 15 year old carry-on that's expandable. I have never had any issues comfortably fitting into the overhead bins of the older 737-700, 800 and the Max varients including the competing Airbus models. My worry is about the bag sizer at the gate (if they have one). I wonder if they've made it an inch or two smaller which would tip the scales in their favor.
One airline that did weigh my bag was UIA. It was annoying. I got by the restriction by pulling my computer bag out of my carry on backpack. At the time I was using a "desktop replacement" which weighed over 8 lbs and the 180watt power brick weighed a lot.
When we traveled for s month in Europe, I created a spreadsheet with all the carriers we would be using, then made sure my luggage worked with the smallest requirements. Your spreadsheet looks like a great tool!
Thank you for this video, the legit research you do. You’re definitely my trusted source for travel tips or guidelines. Pls keep up the great work. Much appreciate your channel.
Something else to consider is aircraft type for the specific carrier. One carrier's dimensions for the overhead bins of a 737 might be totally different on another carrier. So maybe your carry-on meets the requirements but it might not fit well on a specific aircraft. Would be helpful to see that on the spreadsheet
Another great (and very cheap) small city is Slovenia's capital Ljubliana! And on it surrondings, you can find lakes, mountains and castles with spectacular views.
Thanks for your videos. I have made purchases because of some of your reviews which are helpful. Thanks for always breaking it down! And if you do your research you are good!
Just flown Air Canada. They have the size checker for both carryon out at the gate and not actively checking yet. Side note; coming back through customs in Toronto to go back to the United States, I was advised by the customs agent that I could only bring in 1 handful of disposable hand warmers per person. Wasn't an issue coming into Canada, only when trying to leave.
I've listened to a couple of those AI videos - the scripting was almost identical to what you describe. I listen to a couple of other content creators (Megan at Portable Professional for one), and they have said the same thing - the AI videos are wrong. I really appreciate all of the work you do! Feeling comfortable about taking my new bag next month: a 20" Level 8 Voyageur. Excited!
Even if there was an actual standardization coming, I would still check the airlines and airport policies and rules. Always do your due diligence. A few minutes of checking can and will save you much more time in frustration.
Thank you for your video as I fell into the trap of these AI videos 🤣 😅and thank you for your incredible tools for sizing luggage according to airlines, very great work. 🙌🏽👏🏽
It's my belief that carry-on size restrictions are or should be based on the size of the overhead compartments, so that three bags will fit side by side. So it really comes down to what overhead compartment sizes Boeing, Airbus, etc. have offered over the years, and what a particular airline has chosen to buy. I'll be traveling soon for the first time in nine years, so I've been catching up on the changes.
About Asian airlnes - the legacy airlines (Not the LCC!) are usually more generous in allowing passengers to check in their luggage. Recently, I flew with Japan Airlines from Tokyo and Nagoya. My less than $100 USD one-way ticket allowed me to check in a suitcase. You will have to be more careful if you fly with one of the LCC's like Peach. However, I don't find the legacy airlines' domestic tickets to be that expensive and a piece of check-in luggage is included. So, depending on how much stuff you want to carry, It may be better to just check in a luggage to save you some hassle.
This is an awesome tool and great video to clear things up! With airlines, it’s always a cash grab. In 15 years of travel, I’ve never had my carry on bag checked. Last year flying with Aer Lingus, the person at the check in counter was measuring and weighing every single piece of carry on (in addition to the checked bags). This caused a bunch of people to almost be late to the gate. And then guess what - the gate agents didn’t care at all about the size of the bag. All this does is create bottleneck somewhere so they can’t claim it’s for efficiency.
Cool tool, but it has a typo. Bahamasair has a length of 2 inches instead of 22. It's also wrong in the centimeter sheet. Says 5cm instead of 56. Looks like you generated the centimeter sheet from the inches sheet.
Most flights especially domestic they check if you’re carry on fits and iv been caught once on weight and I had a carry on and small hand bag and was over the limit in total. Now I’m going to Europe next year and am paranoid about flights company’s that only allow 5 kg carry on and getting weight 😮
I fly pretty regularly, have a roll aboard that’s a little bigger than a standard 22x14x9 and have never been asked to weigh or size it. Obviously, most US airlines will let you bring on anything you can carry, but I’ve never had an issue with BA, KLM, Cathay, Singapore, etc. OTOH, I don’t fly discount carriers like Ryan or Frontier.
Thanks my friend so that definitely the right size for backpack as well in never curry suit case in side the cabin only backpack im going hopefully from London to Colombia this year ass i live in London and Colombia is my country the origin any way this good measures is more safe thanks 🙏
So tired of the ridiculous and erroneous information that has been floating around on the internet about this issue. Thank you for clearly spelling out what is true and what is bogus.
Thank you for addressing this. I watched one of those videos and stopped watching the moment they said that I would not need to ever check the airlines' sites for their luggage rules. Obviously bad advice. Only partly joking here, but is it possible that these rumours are being put out by luggage companies?
Have you ever flown Icelandair? The depth of their carry on restriction is 7.8 inches- which I haven’t really been able to find! Did you have any trouble with them for a smaller bag but still with a 9inch depth? Or do you know of a 7.8 inch depth bag?
Depend on airline....United are not strict ,on weights and size of carry on luggages...they been practicing that for many years and up to now....when u few hours before boarding they will offer you free charge provided you check in those s been luggages coz no up compartment to place...maybe that's their strategy. The problem is when u board as Row 4 on last seat economy in u cant have place in up compartment so they offer u too to check in the carry on luggages for free.
Pretty sure most EU airlines have those bag size checkers just before the boarding gate. Now they do not always check it, but one never knows which flight might get checked and which not
Thank you so much. The moment I click on a video and realize it's AI, I stop watching. It's getting increasingly harder to find good quality videos and honest reviews, so I appreciate your channel.
As someone who is fortunate to travel to Europe I'm glad you've made this video I see most people are coming on with the proper size of carry-on luggage on international flights. A problem I do see among passengers Is putting on the personal item bag in the overhead when it is supposed to be stored under the seat in front of them This practice of storing personal item bag in the overhead takes up scarce space for other travelers carry-on luggage. I mostly fly with a 20-in backpack and it works with all airlines in the United States and most in Europe
I'm probably in the minority, but, I would appreciate a bag sizer at the loading gate. And, an enforcement of how many items a person can carry on. Would make boarding easier and faster and you wouldn't wind up next to "that person" who has more stuff and infringes on your personal space.
Different airlines, different baggage policy - this makes it MORE CONFUSING & DISRUPTIVE, especially when the travel involves transfers. Passengers who failed to observe those different baggage rules may result in bags being offloaded at the last minute. Airlines SHOULD pool together to standardise these rules to avoid inconvenience. Additionally, when psgrs bring oversized and overweight bags onboard, this will deprive others of a stowage space AND likely incur injuries (especially amongst cabin crew who assisted). Cabin stowage space is limited and size/weight/excessive pieces of carry-ons SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. In my 30 years as a crew, have seen too many “entitled behavior” amongst psgrs with Frequent Flyer Status who insisted their oversized/overweight and excessive pieces are THEIR ENTITLEMENT !! Most times, these psgrs Do NOT want to pay for excessive baggage hence they lug their bags onboard. Even if airlines are Not standardising the Carry-Ons policy, they should at least be STRICTER in sieving out psgrs who failed to meet the requirements. Commercial airlines are NOT private jets - they are “Public Transportation” for Everyone; hence compliance is necessary so EVERYONE can share the limited stowage space.
Personally I just wish that "carry on" roller board bags didn't have extra exterior pockets that get over stuffed and then end up don't fitting in the overhead bins.
When I input my first name and email I get an error and cannot access the sizing link. Tried to go on iPhone 15 pro using safari, chrome and google. None worked so will give it a try on pc at a later time.
There needs to be a crackdown on carry on luggage- in 2023 I was sitting next to someone who had the aisle seat and had 4 bags at their feet - 12 hour flight - getting in and out of our seats was a pain and totally unsafe if an emergency occurred. Totally agree with this! Backpacks really do get skipped and they always focus on the trolleys.
Your carry-on size checker is AWESOME. Can't wait to see the final version.
Way too many luggage companies claim that their carry ons are 22x14x9 even when they are clearly larger than that
It's really lame. A lot of times they are marketing the case dimensions without wheels and handles. Then you measure the thing and it's way bigger.
@awaytogether That is a misleading practice by companies intentionally trying to deceive consumers.
FYI - The term "lame", use the way you did here, comes across as derogatory towards people with mobility disabilities

Thanks Nik. I bought a smaller size carryon for Iceland Air. They sure did check my bag size! Avoided the fees.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I did watch some of those videos and a I literally told my husband that I was waiting until you did a video on the change before I bought a different carry on.

Nice tool, thank you. Need to add Condor.
Thanks for your efforts to clear up all of this confusion.
I already know I'm not gonna need the information in this video but I watched anyway because I like your voice and personality 😄
What a great tool. Thank you so much for this. I am going on a many airline trip in April and this is perfect.

Couldn't agree more. We LOVE Slovenia and covered Ljubljana in a couple other videos just like this one.
FYI for all - you can enter a dummy name and email to access the spreadsheet. Thank you for putting it together!!
The interactive luggage size spreadsheet sounds amazing. Not sure how a developer can get it to update, but that's why I'm not a developer!!
What a great tool you and your team created! Absolutely Brilliant!
How do you plan to keep it updated if an airline changes their rules?
Thanks much!❤
Thanks for your videos. I have made purchases because of some of your reviews which are helpful. Thanks for always breaking it down! And if you do your research you are good!
Thanks for the awesome size checker!!
Thanks for the facts here.✅🙌🏼
Im all for the carry on crack down!

What is LCC? I looked it up, and I got Lutheran Church of Canada. I do live in Canada as it happens.
@@MeiLee-t2v Low Cost Carrier. I hear more people from Asia using this term than those in North America.

What about bags being weighed at the gate?!
Awesome breakdown as always, Nik - and thanks for the shout out!

PacSafe 25 liter backpacks are less then 7.8" depth. But their bigger packs are all too big by just a tenth of an inch.

Yes, but the Airlines can charge you more to check your bag at the boarding gate than they do st the loading gate.
FYI, Air Canada new carry-on retirement is a 1/2" small than the Momo measurement.
Air Canada is truly dreadful. They make United look good.
If airlines are getting stricter about carryon and personalized items, then why not board less people?
What's with the audio? Right speaker is a lot stronger
The EU is meeting in July to standardize carryon rules. American Airlines came out this week they would match what the EU does
They will not
I see it says economy on the spreadsheet. Does business class have the same restrictions for carry on sizes and weights?
Hello pockets! All the items from my personal item are going in my pockets. My carry on is now a personal item size.
The people behind you at the TSA line will be your friend!😂

pdf of chart?

Very helpful . Thanks
Where can I find your carry on compliance checker?
I’d like to see it as well
Click MORE in the box right under the video. It's the first link in there.
The reason the airlines have weight restrictions is due to fuel.
We can hope that one day we will have a universal standard. Until then, thank you for your spreadsheet!
There needs to be a crackdown on carry on luggage- in 2023 I was sitting next to someone who had the aisle seat and had 4 bags at their feet - 12 hour flight - getting in and out of our seats was a pain and totally unsafe if an emergency occurred. The cabin staff didn’t care so our problem. Not flying with them again.
Just use measuring tape and the airline's website, ffs
No air new zealand!
RUBBISH - people will bring bigger suitcases onto aircraft, and nothing will be done
Those AI channels are awful.
Some traveler’s carry-on bags can fit a mid size kid in it.
