No, they are distorted because they were recorded that way. Old, well played tapes do not develop distortion. I've been a tape listener/collector for 25 Years. Safe ;)
I've still got the original tape of this and the distortion is on the recording. You hear someone cranking it up at a certain point on the tape. Was like it even when the tape was new.
