Hey kev, I bought the same rustler you have and took it to it’s first skatepark bash!! It rips even on 2s!! Such a nice car, and I can thank you for persuading me to get one. Great work!!
I think the Traxxas 4wd Slash platform is being pushed beyond its limit with the big wheels on the rustler. I have a 4wd stampede and everytime I take it for a bash sometime breaks, usually the drive shaft or hubs or links. Smaller wheels on the slash really makes it bulletin proof
I have a 2wd Stampede that's 9 or 10 years old and I have not replaced a single part yet everything is still perfectly fine and straight. I bash it all the time. Idk what happened to yours :/
My brother has a Slash 4X4 VXL and broke a driveshaft at a track not too long ago. It’s not the platform that’s weak, it’s the part. Traxxas needs to improve the driveshafts.
As a Rustler 4x4 vxl owner, I do agree that the driveshafts are weak. For instance when I was doing a sharp turn, it went up on 2 wheels and the tire must have spun so fast that the u joint on the driveshaft broke. I've also been recently having a problem with my spur gear stripping too. And I just drive it in my backyard I don't do anything crazy. I did jump it good once though and snapped the rear axle carrier. I also ran it into a trash can🤦♂️ Great video Kev!
Low tsm is meant for high traction surfaces so it reduces your steering input to reduce rollover or sliding out while high tsm is meant for low traction surfaces like ice as an extreme example. High tsm gives you high control as you won’t likely rollover anyways. The more you know!
So happy to see a vid on the rustler because ive just picked up a rustler 4x4 vxl with gtr shocks all rpm arms bearing carriers and 2 3s batteries for 300$
I bougt GPM axles front and rear. They have been working for 6 month now. But,.....You have to make a shim to put between the bearings in the rear hubs.
I noticed 2 screws that weren't screwed in all the way at the beginning of the video. Their near the screws that allow you to take off the front end from the chassis... At the end, the left one is missing. Just thought I'd let you know Kev. Thanks for the great video. The rustler 4x4 is the only rc I own so I greatly appreciate videos of yours with all your knowledge and such. Keep em coming
Hey Kev, I've got a 6s rustler 4x4, totally not worth doing. It's crazy and I usually only run it on 3s. 4s is perfectly op tho. But the sway bar kit TOTALLY changed the car. That and 60k diff oil. Those to are a complete game changer. You'll absolutely love the car at that point. Btw MIP driveshafts hold up to 6s tumbles across parking lots 💪
Yeah buddy i have a 4x4 6s 4292 motor slash. The things wants to break itself apart. The big bone center shaft is a life saver. Traxxas steel spline are great but the nut ends break once in a while. But that was with 150mm tires and tumbles across parking lots
Kev the v2 rustler 4x4 has grey driveshafts that are a bit better. I have broken the rear but I got those banggood ones (the blue ones) and they're fine. The front never broke for me. The c hub things broke a few times after skate park abuse but I've tortured my rustler so I can't really complain. I got the rpm ones and they've been fine so far. I also have a jx ecoboost 21kg servo and it's so fast. The stock servo is so weak the wheels often couldn't turn on dirt so a great upgrade. Thanks for the videos so I know what product are good and what aren't.
Hello from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, I would like to know, if those 4pack tyres with the white spokes you had in the video rustler vxl 2wd, would fit a la trax rally car 1/18 scale. I have upgrade her with sealed bearings, traxxas 5 channel reciever and transmitter. Other upgrades are aluminum drive shafts and shocks, hot racing 60t metal spur gear, and I put in the velineon motor and esc. I am also doing other upgrades as well. This car is stupid fast. I just want to thank you for your time, mate
Hey Kev, love this Truggie but is it fair to treat it as a Monster Truck and expect it to hold up the same. It’s perfect for grass or dirt but not really a skate park basher don’t you think?
Anyone having this problem with driveshafts should just use slightly smaller tires. Slash tires and a slightly bigger pinion(depending on user 13-18 tooth) and you’ll have no more issues. Other tire wheel choices are good too just needs to be smaller. Also make sure if you ever replace the shafts be sure to get the right ones. There’s (X)heavy duty(black) and (A)extreme heavy duty(grey),
I had those same metal axles on my slash 4x4. They didn't last 1 battery before pins ripped out. Replaced the pins and the shaft to hold the tire on snapped in half at the drive pin to hex. Worse axles I ever used. Plastic ones never stood a chance. Now I use mip for both front and rear and no more broke axles. Just have to use a lot of lock tight on the set screws.
Like in 6:38 i had the same problem from the first hour of hard driving, not jumps. This bottom round plastic part holds the spring in straight and steady position. This part has a gap so you can remove it from the shaft and i lost it in the dirt when i was driving. Other than that is a good rc car and i don't do jumps, but for a fast hard driving and small jumps because of the uneven ground as a first day of driving i am impressed from the top speed and the wheelies and for how fast can accelerate. Thank God that exist hobby shops, that do monthly payments and that's how i managed to buy it. Guys if you buy it as first expensive rc car, you will get impressed of how fast it is and how easily do wheelies when you press full the throttle from a stopped position.
I'd say the only truly strong drive shafts for the traxxas 1/10 platform are the MIP X-DUTYS, Tekno M6's and the new Traxxas Extreme heavy-duty steel splined drive shafts (I'm not talking about the constant velocity, those are only good for 2s). The X-Dutys are best for 4s-5s power systems, the M6's are best for 3s bashing and the Extreme heavy-duty drive shafts seem best for 2s-3s racing (because they are the lightest)
I'm not sure if those axles will hold up with the VXL system but I know they didn't hold up to my brothers Hobbywing Max10 with a 14 tooth pinion in his Stampede 4x4. Snapped one in 30 minutes. Jerry rigged it back together and literally popped the other 3 as soon as he nailed the throttle. 2 broke at the drive pin, the other broke clean off at the CV joint.
Same complaint as on my Traxxas Stampede 4x4. The rear drive shafts are weak and kept breaking so replaced them with Fastrax ones (part FTTX262) but had 2 of those fail so went back to stock Traxxas plastic ones and now only run the car on 2S to save the rear shafts. Not great from Traxxas when Arrma 3S BLX range can take a 3S on plastic drive shafts without any troubles.
I have a VXL 2wd Rustler. I never got the 4wd version because I have a Losi Tenacity 4x4 Truggy that sits on the shelf 24/7. 2wd VXL on 3S is crazy enough!
My brushless converted OG Rustler 2wd is the most fun RC I own. Absolute wheelie machine and will break anything plastic in the driveline until you make it all metal.
Look at the tire expansion @ 9:44 as the car lifts a wheel off the ground. These cars need limited slip diffs. Unless someone wants to make an electric brake that stops that (like the E-diff on the Suby BRZ)
Have had MIPs on my stampede 4x4 vxl for 6 years. Little rusty but that’s on me. Still absolute 3s wheelie monsters with big tires on high traction surfaces
Gpm drive shafts are like the ones in the rear but better because they sell a rustler 4x4 specific set. Ive crashed my rustler bad and bent the shaft thread portion at the end, hammered it straight and kept bashing, they are that good.
I’ve been using tekno rc driveshafts in my slash and rustlers for years and never managed to bend or break them. They are way cheaper than MIP and I feel tougher. The only negative is the suspension travel must be limited “very slightly” to prevent the dogbone end popping out. That being said the stock setup is fine it’s only when you try to put longer shocks on it’s a issue. Of course nothing is unbreakable, if anyone can break it, kev can 😂
Those driveshafts are repairable. I've made similar repairs before. Drill and tap the outside and put a couple set screws in bit leave space to slide. Tack weld the set screws so they can't back out.
I have no problems with the plastic drive shafts on my Rustler 4x4. I did however destroy my rear ring and pinion (From landing jumps on throttle). So, I upgraded to the Traxxas spiral hardened gears font and rear.
Not so sure about that ecoboost servo. I replaced a savox 1230sg 36kg@6v with that ecoboost 33kg@7.4v on an old savage, but the savox was more powerful for sure. Dirt cheap tho. And i'm using the same banggood specials as you are running in the front and they are not that good at all, but they are so cheap that it's about the same price as the traxxas plastic ones so when you compare it to that it's still a slightly better option, was about to try the ones you are running in the back next to see if they are any better and judging from your vid it seems like they are. Although in the end i'll probably end up with some good ones (traxxas, XO-1, hot racing) but they are just so expensive compared to the banggood specials that in this case it's worth to give the cheap ones a try.
Kevin your dedication to providing great rc content and informative videos is top notch! Thank you and your mates so very much for all the laughs and great videos! Keep it up! Cheers!
To fix that driveshaft issue of the new ones that came from Banggood try coating both halves of driveshafts with jb weld epoxy or the red permanent thread locker.
My erevo v1 has similar plastic driveshafts/axle shafts. I was twisting off the stub axles on the wheel side about 2 out of 3 times I'd go out. I swapped the rears over to metal ones that look just like your front ones and I've only had 1 front plastic driveshaft fail out of the last 8 times I've gone bashing. Mine are cheap-o's from GPM I think but they seem decent for my level of abuse. I just got a Kraton 6S today so that's going to be my main rig from here on out. Had to get it used since it's still backordered everywhere but it's in great shape. Chassis and mechanicals/electronics all look and function like new. Even the body is barely cracked, and those things are thin as can be.
Get aluminum shock caps or upgrade Also Use the plastic grey bigger drive shafts TRA6851A drive shaft TRA3767A aluminum shock cap I haven’t broken the extreme heavy drive shafts just worn out the threads on it

Hey Kev why don't you by MIP axles and be done with it. ...that's the only axle I put on all my Traxxas and I've never broken one yet. I did have one come loose and fall apart but I was able to recover the pin and repair it. Make sure you use Loctite.
hi kev! a little advice to the driveshafts, run it on 2s that will make spin less aggressively in the driveshafts but it will not go as fast as it would on 3s
Hi kevin i have the traxxas rusler 4x4 too I have 2 questions 1. Why do he not use the wheely bar (i have 11.1 v) (Or Do i have to do the extra gear) 2 the battery loads 2 hours And he needs to do 1 hour Sorry for bad english☺ Pleas anwer☺
I’ve always heard guys having axle problems with the rustler. Mine must be lucky or I don’t drive it hard enough because all I’ve had to replace is a rear wheel hex. And the rear piece that keeps my hinge pins in but I haven’t gotten around to that yet
@@DashzRight yes, the 4X4 VXL had an update early on after the axles kept breaking. Traxxas added the gray HD axles over the black axles as they are stronger. They also did this for most of their fleet. I suppose you could say they superseded the axles.
I’ve got a 4s rustler 2wd with badlands on it and I bash the shit out of it and never broke a plastic driveshaft. I’ve stripped gears and ripped entire wheels off and the driveshafts still haven’t broke. Things an absolute beast.
Ive had my rustler 4x4 since they came out a year and half ago. I have a PILE of broken driveshaft pieces. I have broken those plastic driveshafts in every way possible. I might consider upgrading the rears, but good driveshaft upgrades for the rustler just are not out there.
Had a similar issue with the e-revo 1/16. The servo they come with is really prone to breaking. Had to replace it with a metal gear after going through 2 OEM ones.
Should've wired an external BEC inline with your ESC leads, rewired the receiver with BEC and your servo problems would be solved. Traxxas bec only puts out 5.25v. Throwing servos at a car is pointless if the bec can't provide it good voltage
I love my Rustler 4x4 VXL. But I had to dump an extra $200 into it to make it reliable. I had to upgrade to Traxxas Steel drive shafts and upgrade the shocks. Traxxas has got to stop putting plastic driveshafts in anything brushless!!!
this is why i am switching to the Arrma Kraton... the rustler is a great cat but it’s got so many problems... it brakes everytime you use it... if anybody’s interested in buying a traxxas rustler i’m in vancouver selling mine on offer up!
I would say put the Traxxas constant velocity metal drive shafts on, But on my Rustler 4x4 I put the hot racing metal shafts on and they are bullet prof.
I put a couple of the eco boosts in my E-REVO and I was suprised by the quality you can hear it just moving them with your hands THANKS Kev!!

Love my rustler, got the gpm shafts on mine, and the gtx shocks, their both worth every penny.
MIP rear shafts and Traxxas metal shafts on the front. Bit pricey but better than replacing after every bash.
It would be nice to see some new rustler 4x4 vxl footage.
I think you confused the word offff with oooof but nice vid kev 👍
Well I have mentioned in previous videos that I was going to buy a Rustler 4x4..em definitely not so thanks Kev for saving me the cash..I wish they'd send me 1 to review lol..I have to pay for all my stuff.. haha. Good Job 👍😉
@Anthony Chiulli I know that he does but some stuff he doesn't. I'm just saying that he's saved me money you know brother
Hey Kev why don't you by MIP axles and be done with it. ...that's the only axle I put on all my Traxxas and I've never broken one yet. I did have one come loose and fall apart but I was able to recover the pin and repair it. Make sure you use Loctite.
Happy 600k kev!
I like the BMX track better than the skate park. Fun videos, keep it up. 😎👍
hi kev! a little advice to the driveshafts, run it on 2s that will make spin less aggressively in the driveshafts but it will not go as fast as it would on 3s
Why does it say 2 hours ago😂
Cuz it was a hidden video
Really like this truck can't go wrong with the price and upgraded parts just add powerful batteries with charger it's a win win situation 🙏🙏🙏🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲💪💪💪
you should get the steel chasis brace from traxxas for your rustler i put the brace on mine and it helps a heck of alot
Hi kevin i have the traxxas rusler 4x4 too
I have 2 questions
1. Why do he not use the wheely bar (i have 11.1 v)
(Or Do i have to do the extra gear)
2 the battery loads 2 hours
And he needs to do 1 hour
Sorry for bad english☺
Pleas anwer☺
11.1 volt battery
I love my 4x4 rustler and i get you the stock servo sucks! Also on my rustler I have upgraded driveshafts to the traxxas one!
I’ve always heard guys having axle problems with the rustler. Mine must be lucky or I don’t drive it hard enough because all I’ve had to replace is a rear wheel hex. And the rear piece that keeps my hinge pins in but I haven’t gotten around to that yet
Same here no issiues what so ever, but look how kevin drives these things thays why they break lol
It’s likely bc Traxxas updated to the HD axles (gray) on the V2 Rustler 4x4 massive improvement
@@DashzRight yes, the 4X4 VXL had an update early on after the axles kept breaking. Traxxas added the gray HD axles over the black axles as they are stronger. They also did this for most of their fleet. I suppose you could say they superseded the axles.
My rustler drive shafts have broken 1 time and I’ve had the truck for 8 months. And I run the heck outta it.
My rustler 4x4 with a hobbywing max10 sct and run 2s with 15t pinion and never broke one
Rc Addiction I constantly run 3s and once I broke the rear driveshaft. Other than that I feel like it’s indestructible haha
I’ve got a 4s rustler 2wd with badlands on it and I bash the shit out of it and never broke a plastic driveshaft. I’ve stripped gears and ripped entire wheels off and the driveshafts still haven’t broke. Things an absolute beast.
I had mine for 10 years I just replaced them yesterday
Ive had my rustler 4x4 since they came out a year and half ago. I have a PILE of broken driveshaft pieces. I have broken those plastic driveshafts in every way possible. I might consider upgrading the rears, but good driveshaft upgrades for the rustler just are not out there.
I have put integy driveshafts on my slash and they are doing great
Only $23
Had a similar issue with the e-revo 1/16. The servo they come with is really prone to breaking. Had to replace it with a metal gear after going through 2 OEM ones.
Traxxas tough baby! Gr8 carnage loved it
Should've wired an external BEC inline with your ESC leads, rewired the receiver with BEC and your servo problems would be solved. Traxxas bec only puts out 5.25v. Throwing servos at a car is pointless if the bec can't provide it good voltage
drill and tap outer axle then put a grub screw in. leave just loose enough to allow it to slide in and out
Tekno m6 drive shafts for the 4x4 slash perfect fit and are really good
Love the slow motion bits.
I love my Rustler 4x4 VXL. But I had to dump an extra $200 into it to make it reliable. I had to upgrade to Traxxas Steel drive shafts and upgrade the shocks. Traxxas has got to stop putting plastic driveshafts in anything brushless!!!
I’ve never had a problem with the plastic axles but I’m generally also not too hard on my trucks
Iv got gpm ones for my rustler 2wd there like a spline design instead of the d shape. They work really good.
Someone probably already told you in the comments, and I know I’m super late but you got your front tires on backwards 👍🏾
I love your videos and they inspire me to get in this hobby
You need to get the Traxxas Sledgehammer tires for the rustler makes a huge difference and a lot more fun
Not on the street, I have them on mine and it takes away from the stability But I absolutely love the speed and wheelies
You should also add GTR shock from a Slash Ultimate They Just Never Break !!!
Great video Kev 👍
Kev needs pro-line trenchers for his off road vehicles because even if it's 2 wheel drive it will still have extream of road traction
this is why i am switching to the Arrma Kraton... the rustler is a great cat but it’s got so many problems... it brakes everytime you use it... if anybody’s interested in buying a traxxas rustler i’m in vancouver selling mine on offer up!
offer up and craigslist
i dont know why but... only 1 of my driveshafts broke on my ruster and i have it on 17t pinion for like 3 months... i guess ur just the breaking king
constant velocity drive shafts best
9051x front drive shafts
9052x rear drive shafts ( both constant velocity)
I would say put the Traxxas constant velocity metal drive shafts on, But on my Rustler 4x4 I put the hot racing metal shafts on and they are bullet prof.
